Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Kyper was in the know when he said Marner wanted Draisaitl money, then backed off and said $13.8m the next day. Now we hear rumours that Marner wanted $15.5m and Leafs offered $13.5m. Insanity.
Truly good riddance. How the f*** are you ever gonna build any winning culture with a money vacuum like this.

The team's structure didn't work as soon as we got Tavares. Now that he's coming off the books, we want to get rid of one of our prime players for free.
If he’s willing to take a pay cut they could keep him as PK specialist. But his offensive production in the playoffs isn’t worth the money they pay him.

The dark realpolitik is MLSE may need him back and Marner won't have the stomach to move.
And they should. This is what I've been talking about the whole time. It's about the perceived value, and to let that walk for nothing is irrational. We can even sign him and then trade him the following year if it gets that bad. At least we get something.

Id still make changes, like getting rid of Rielly, hes useless now since hes not even on the PP.

Remember when Marner was called "the best winger in playoff hockey" over the last 4 years backed up by a wall of advanced stats jargon?

His fanboys are truly something else.
Don't worry, they'll flush this one down and argue their way back up to that position again in a month.

Don’t know why this guy wanted to stay and refused to waive his NMC. Didn’t want to sign all season, didn’t want a trade, and in the end gave the same shitty playoff performance he always has.

That nixed Rantanen deal will be a “what if” for the ages. f*** Dubas for giving an RFA a NMC in the last year of his deal. Just terrible negotiation skills on every one of the Big Three’s second contracts.

It's the classic don't know what they want with a vague feeling of screw you.

I have not problem paying the greedy MoFo if he delivered in the playoffs. Unfortunately he morphs into Alex Kerfoor in late April and May. I could care less if they do not make the playoffs next year as long as I do not have to watch this clown in Blue and White.

This guy, marner man what a f***ing bum

He had maybe 2-3 dominant playoff games over the last 20 (3 series).

He ended with 13 pts in 13 games which is not good enough for 11M let alone the 13M+ he wants.

This guy is a terrible hockey player when the game gets tough in the playoffs. He is super soft and weak. Plays the most passive and perimeter brand of hockey I have ever seen. Can not generate any offense or shots with his shots/game being a joke.

Marner is a 7-8M player for the leafs if we want to win in the playoffs. He can't produce and is just way timid to pay with hopes he is a franchise player.

He needs to be let go. The only way he can win a cup is with 3-4 players better than him leading the charge as was the case at the 4 Nations

IMHO 1-2 million always matters, but in Marner's case maybe it doesn't matter much because if you're paying him 11/12/13/14 (or god forbid the rumoured ask of 15.5), he's just not worth it at any of those numbers.

If you're happy with just making the playoffs, then sure, keeping Marner makes sense, that's not me though and I'm pretty sure it's not most fans. f*** compiling assists in November, help the team win in the playoffs. He's too much of a whiny baby to do that though, his meltdown last night I would think made that crystal clear for anyone who hadn't figured it out yet.

Do you really want this loser back? And are even willing to bend over again on contract negotiations because 1-2 million more doesn't matter? SMH.
I think 1-2 million extra matters, because the perception is that the Leafs organization is willing to let players run the show and bend them over, time and time again....enough is enough.

Maybe don’t play in the 4 Nations next time? 🤷‍♂️
So you’re saying : Don’t play a competitive international tournament during the regular season as a base suggestion. And doubly so if you’ve just returned from a medical safari from Germany if you have a potential injury that caused you significant time out before it?

That’s novel. Interesting concept. Putting your team first above personal vanity projects. Hmm.

Wonder if the poster who claimed Marner has been the best 5 on 5 playoff player in the last 5 years, regrets posting that. LOL.

Feel I need to drop this comment here as well since it doesn’t seemTo be talked about enough on here:

Honestly - the fact that no-show, Mr Pay me like Draisaitl, screams at his teammates and then goes out and berates them to the media is one of the most obscene things I’ve heard (hockey wise) lately. He had an A on his jersey? No wonder that core didn’t go anywhere

He had the leverage to hold Toronto over a barrell and apply all the pressure for them to pay him.. he was gonna make sure theh felt the pain. Either pay me... or get nothing!

Toronto is one of the few teams with the pockets and stupidy to overpay for Marner.

I honestly felt really bad for Mitch when he told the press he felt depressed and that he was a risky pick. Those were humble words that are surprisingly rarely spoken from him. That's all it would take for me to have loved him as a Leaf.

It's a cruel business and hell be happier elsewhere and we won't have to be sucked into more identical heartbreak.
