Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

This is the most "battered wife syndrome" post I've ever read, oh my goodness.

We can't purge these guys because what we end up with might be worse!!

WORSE? With the exception of the rookie year, the last-place rebuild season was the most fun I've had as a Leafs fan in the last decade. The Phaneuf and Kessel years were more fun. This team is too good for the regular season to be interesting. This team is a guaranteed choker to make the playoffs a miserable experience.

The only way this argument makes any sense is that the Sens are a playoff team again so beating them in the first round every year would be pretty funny. Otherwise, watching these country club losers just isn't fun, or even interesting any more. We've got a rink that empties out during the third period of playoff games and a steady stream of jersey tossers. What the f*** apples are we counting, exactly????
Those years were horrendous hockey. I can't believe you're praising that era - my gawd

Rantanen… oh wait, Marner f***ed the franchise over by refusing to go.
Hey, I wouldn't mind trading Marner for someone like Rantanen. Clearly, teams pretty much see equal value in that. But I don't want to let Marner walk for nothing like a lot of fans do. We'd be losing the value of a Rantanen - as that was the rumored trade. I'm blaming management a million times over because we had plenty of opportunities to trade Marner before his no trade clause kicked in.

Praise? I didn't praise shit. I just said they were more fun to watch than the mess we're subject to every year with this group. You can set your watch to the fact that this team plays their worst game of the year in the most important: I have absolutely zero respect for these guys any more.

We're synonymous with failure. We're such a joke that fans of other sports who couldn't pick McDavid out of a lineup know that we're the guys who collapse. We set records every year for the most mathematically embarrassing collapse.

That you're willing to hold onto this, that's what's shocking. They might regress? According to the Globe and Mail this morning the only reason to hold on to this team is if you have a humiliation fetish.

It is an answer. I said 1-2 million more. Which is 12-13 million...
You said more, you didn't say more than what.

OK so you're willing to pay him 13 million, are you happy if he keeps giving you the same - great player in the regular season, much less great in the playoffs, or for all that money do you want more from him in the playoffs?

He is gone. I don’t see any scenario where he stays in Toronto now. I also don’t want him to stay. He is toxic.

They were not more fun to watch. It was horrendous hockey. Randy Carlyle boring choking system and Ron Wilson's "I hope Santa gives me a fat paycheck?" In that sense, it was fun to see how embarrassing those eras was. Everyone was having fun laughing at how pathetic we were.

I think that’s why you have fans who are mad at management, Shanahan in particular. After Montreal in 2021 he had the opportunity to make a change. Hell after Tampa 2022 he could have made a change. After Florida in 2023 he had another opportunity. Now people are bitching that the Rantanen move got nixed. Why the hell would the organization wait to make that move when they have zero control over the situation? That is just bad asset management and honestly bad management skills in general. Shanahan to me shoulders all the blame here and should be fired. They gave the player the NMC, you can’t be mad at the player for using it afterwards.
Management made a poor decision thinking they could build around those guys and giving it one more chance.
Now it’s time to break them up and find more talented playoff players at the top of the lineup.
Based on the available resources and aging players it’s going to be tough. We knew that at the beginning of the year.

I'm amazed that there are sill people who don't get this. They're actually drawing parallels with the teams with Gilmour and Sundin saying they all lost, they're all losers. I'm just flabbergasted. SMH.

Also, calling these guys "losers", man that shows that you're not even close to getting it. Give your head a shake.
Loser is harsh. Let’s say:

What did they win? I'm all ears. Besides winning your heart 🤣

I refuse to believe this team needs to be blown up. This roster needs a competent person to tweak the core. Game 7 of round 2 and won the division. They need to swap Marner for a Tkachuk type deal.

We already have Knies in that mold. Need a few more guys like that

You're having reading comprehension issues. He clearly said that the last place team was fun to watch and you know what, it was! Babcock was the coach, not Carlyle of Wilson in case you've forgotten and it reminded me of the year Pat Burns too over. He installed a system, you could see the team played with structure for the first time in ages, you could see the potential if talent was added to the mix.

Time is a flat circle, and yet here you are arguing that we shouldn't blow up this team.

The most expensive bottle of booze I've ever bought was opened on the day that Randy bobandy Carlyle was fired, if you think I'm harkening for those glory days then you're dead wrong. But I will absolutely declare that those teams were more fun to be a fan of, because if you're going to get humiliated every year, at least there was variety.

I think it's pretty obvious Matthews was injured and Nylander was our best forward in the playoffs. The biggest playoff disappointments for me as Marner and JT. That's not just this season either, we see the same shit every year.
Crazy how you absolve Matthews to me, absolutely crazy.

No, again. It was not more fun to watch. Being last place is not fun unless you're a masochist

Yea, because we're not getting any value back. And free agency doesn't look great.

It is harsh, but if the shoe fits ...

They won playoff series as underdogs.

It's not even about winning, it's about playing up to expectations, being all you can be and all that jazz. Don't embarrass yourself, that's a good starting point. That's something those teams did, and what the current core has yet to do in 9 years of trying.

I hope you get it now, because it seems pretty obvious and I really don't know what more people can do to explain it to you.

It's fun to romanticize and live in fantasy land - but no, it's fundmenatlly all about winning. It's embarrassing to think highly of losers who did not achieve anything substantial. And my point is with Marner is, it really sucks losing a Rantanen type value for nothing.

I'm disappointed in him as well, but it is clear he was injured. What's crazy to me is that people keep deflecting to Matthews, Nylander or whoever else to defend Marner.
I believe he is the biggest issue, unfortunately. Our team winning percentage stays the same when Matthews is out. It says a lot me imo.
