What was striking last night, again, he didn't look dangerous at all with the puck. Never once did you see something dynamic, a dangerous move, good edges, a cut back, it was on the margins and it was looking to dish. It was so ordinary to watch, but sadly always so typical in the end.
I'm a sucker for redemption stories, and a firm believer the next chance always provides an opportunity to change the narrative. I'm also a long suffering Eagles fan, they were serial failures forever, but finally pushed through and now have two Bowls and are an enviable organization.
Unfortunately, the die is cast here, no rising from the ashes, Marner will forever be the playoff failure, the great talent that simply wilts when we need him. He isn't alone, but it doesn't matter. It's a wasted legacy, so much promise over the years, perhaps the worst period in a tortured history.
He's gone, and frankly I don't think the franchise will be the better. Cap space is a lesser consolation prize, a trade was best and it didn't happen.
What a disappointment.
