Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

His contract thing is his fault too. The Leafs management wanted to extend him for some reason.
I don’t know. I’m the fence about it. He is obviously way overpaid and he thinks way too highly of himself, but our management should have played hardball. Just so much blame to go around. How we fumbled this situation is crazy.

And after all of it, him and Marner can’t take a lick of blame. They just don’t get it.

These playoffs were an opportunity for him to earn a contract offer and he did not do enough to for the Leafs to even consider that an option. After locker clean out day, he is no longer a Leafs player.

Good chance he'll be just fine after a 100 point season where he was the Leafs best all around player and a PPG post season where he was the Leafs best all around player.

He and the Leafs need to part ways because its obvious at this point the culture of this team is broken beyond repair so all they can do is tear it down to the studs and start over. But I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him be successful elsewhere ala the 4 Nations.

The frustrating part is, that this stupid f***ing asshole would not waive his no trade when we could’ve had Rantanen.

Selfish, arrogant player. Now f*** off and get out.

Absolutely insane take. Just completely ridiculous.

Nah Derozan was bad outside of the stats. A mid range chucker, who can't play defence.

Literally the opposite of what you want in NBA. I don't even get what's wrong with our guys, they have the talent imo, unlike Derozan who every advanced stats said was a fraud.

Lowry was loved compared to Derozan by advanced stats.

You have 4 guys who are too passive. You need one or two to have some assertiveness to their game. Following an era (the Kessel era) where they lacked high end skill, the leafs prioritized that, but also drafted guys that didn’t have that other ingredient which was hunger and ultimate compete.

You can go back and point to so many mistakes. We could have walked out of the first round in 2015 with both Marner and Konecny. Had you taken both, one could have been traded for a defenseman.

2016 draft we take Korshkov over Debrincat. We let certain players with that drive walk or traded them for nothing. Honestly looking back on this era, I’m not going to have a ton of resentment towards the players, my frustration will be with how the leafs management handled the roster, in particular Shanahan’s inability to make good decisions throughout his tenure that has led to failure.

No the frustrating part is they could have traded him before 2023 instead of waiting for his NMC to kick in. The other frustrating part is any leafs fan thinking Rantanen was going to be the solo answer to this team winning. I’m sorry but take a look at this core, Rantanen wasn’t going to change the fabric. The issues with this team are deep rooted, be honest with yourself, we are more than a Rantanen trade away from winning the cup.

You'll find out when he's gone and not the first option in every situation.

The people clamouring for him to be gone are gonna be the first ones complaining about the absolute garbage contracts we sign this off-season. I hope a lot of people are ready to see what this team is going to look like next year. I hope they can find the right depth adds but man, it’s probably time for a full on retool.

Let Marner walk, let Tavares walk and pray to God McDavid will go to UFA in 2026. I would not spend to the cap in 2025. The UFA’s available aren’t worth it.

Maybe Ekblad if you can get him. But then I’d look to move on from Rielly.
