Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

‘Great”? What was great about it? Yeah the pass lead to a game winning goal but what was great about it? I’ve rewatched it a few times just normal happenstance.

Really Is every pass now considered great?
No, not even close. For example in game 6 there were a lot of passes in that game, but only one (the one sending Matthews in for the goal) has been called great.

It might not be great in terms of technical difficulty, but when you add up where the game and series was at the time; the pressure to come up with a game changing play, I would contend it was a great pass. YMMV

Only marners passes as usual but he made a good play on the steal for sure but it’s weird that they don’t seem to understand that it was an individual effort by Matthews on the goal

I agree but, at the same time, I was answering the question about every pass being concidered a great pass now.

Watching the tsn interviews, so many of the guys seem like their genuinely excited for tomorrow. Yet, Mitch just comes across as nervous and insincere with an entitled tone

Man, I really want to like this guy but I just can't. In the end, I want him to succeed for the betterment of our team and I hope he makes me eat my words

I mean if Pontus Holmberg made the pass, it would be a miracle. It’s really odd the lengths people go to make a simple play seem amazing, especially from an “elite” player
Marner apparently shouldnt be judged on goals because he is a playmaker. This was a pass made by a 57 goal scorer... a crisp saucer pass, pinpoint accuracy..and you want to celebrate a routine 3 foot pass Marner made in the neutral zone to Matthews? These are NHL player, not beer leaguers.

Those were two great passes.

Three levels of playmaking:
1 - making the obvious pass that everyone sees.
2 - making the difficult pass that most can’t identify quickly enough to hit the opening.
3 - there is no play, so you do something to open up a pass and make it.

That Marner pass was the top level of playmaking. He turned what could have been nothing into something dangerous.

To be fair to the guy, he's not the most eloquent or self-reflective of individuals like Rielly, most self-confident like Nylander, nor most happy go lucky like Carlo. Marner is also the most shat upon player on the Leafs by far, so it doesn't surprise me that he has a bunch of canned responses to deflect every reporter's question.

If anything, after his "gods" comment last year, it wouldn't surprise me either if his agent works/worked with him on giving the bare minimum in interviews.

Tonight is a glorious opportunity for Marner and everyone else tbh. If leads the team to a victory, he probably will be venerated as a $14M x 8 AAV god, justly deserved or not lol.

He really hates interviews but as long as he's good on the ice it's all that matters tonight

Id love him more if he wouldve signed a 12 .8 million dollar deal
Him not signing a fair deal irks me
Its like he left mathews and willy out to dry to take the heat ,while he goes to san jose or anaheim
I find it very likely he leaves us. However, we still have this series so he's still our guy for now and we're currently in the top 5. Can't believe we're here, we'll need him to be a horse tonight

It’s just bad parenting. It is what it is. I can tell matthews has altered his interview presence to come off more genuine and more acco7ntable, even though it’s kind of monotone. Regardless of what happens, I don’t want marner returning. Use the free cap space as a weapon. When a good trade offer comes up mid season where no one can take a high cap hit player a team is looking to get rid of (ie. laine) you can get for 50 cents on the dollar

when he turned back out of the panthers zone on the gwg I could see the scorn for this weak greedy loser who doesn't care enough to try to get to the net pour across a screen in my mind. really smart play to do so though, even if it didn't make a difference

He is for sure entitled. Guy dug his own grave in T.O. I think Matthews gives really sincere, non generic interviews, which I appreciate.

Let's see what management does with 16 this off season

He dug his own grave imho. But I hope he gives me the middle finger tonight and tells me to shut the f*** up 🖕

I know everything he does is exaggerated. He has the Trumpian touch.

You only need to go back 10 pages to find 90% of people wanted him gone. The rest of your post is deliberately disingenuous enough that I won’t bother. There’s 50 pages and 15 other versions of this thread that we both know the arguments of.

That you’ve insulted me twice in two posts doesn’t go unnoticed, by me or anyone you’re trying to convince.

Marner is welcome to prove us wrong, because I know that insults on the internet sure won’t. Enjoy the long weekend bro.

I've insulted you twice? LOL, not even once muffin. 90%...? ... tell me when it is my turn to BS.

His interviews are horrendous - they make him come across incredibly unlikeable. So strange. I would have to imagine it would be really easy to give the fans what they want from an interview perspective. Much harder than to give them what they want on the ice.

Either way, I do hope he absolutely has the best night of his life tonight.

No pregame interview for either him or Captain Matthews? Leaders should want to speak in these moment. They should welcome the challenge, not fear it.
