Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

I understand the flak for Matthews and Marner but it seems like Morgan Rielly is flying under the radar. And he has a contract with a NMC for 5 more years.
Oh he's not flying under this radar. In another recent thread of similarly like-minded folk, I say he's the first to be asked to waive.

Without leadership at any one of G/1D/1C, its tough to contend. When you have none of those positions going, well...

I had a dream last night. Marner played his butt off in game 6, fighting through traffic to go to the net, looking as engaged as he's ever been, scored 2 goals himself and set up Matty for 2 easy goals the last one coming in OT.

Then he played just as well in game 7, put up another 3 points looking like vintage Doug Gilmour and even fought Marchand in the 2nd period after he bumped into our goalie but we lost the game on a bad bounce in OT.

In the summer, Marner turned down the Leafs offer of 15mx8 and signed instead for 11.16mx7 with Montreal and led them to the cup next season, winning the Art-Ross and Conn-Smythe in the process while playing his newfound gritty style of hockey ala Doug Gimour. Montreal fans relentlessly mock the Leafs for not appreciating what they had in Marner.

Is he overpaid? Yeah. But for the most part Mo has been pretty....fine, for this series. He was better than fine against Ottawa, and infinitely better than his putrid regular season.

Easy to forget he beat Bob clean near the end of Game 3 but rang it off the post not long before OT started.

Morgan has the same amount of goals as Matthews and Marner combined.

McDrai takes the pressure off the entire team and they perform.

Flippy back pass Mitch and Matthews put pressure on the whole team.

50% on here? Man, read the thread we're posting in. There's less than 10 people who still defend this guy, (and I'm counting you to get there), the rest is a dogpile. Outside you've got kids and the occasional person who like him, but I'm counting them to get to 10%.

Your numbers were optimistic on the day you made your account, but they ain't even close any more. This is one of those wacky posts where you're trying to tell me to disbelieve my lyin' eyes. I've been around here long enough to know who's who in the zoo, and boy let me tell you that the animals are restless.
Hmm ok, not sure what you meant with that second part, but ok!

Regarding the first - i do think that majority of fans listen to pundits/“experts” etc on TV and radio about how great Mitch’s always been, so I still think the majority is his fans. Knowledgable hockey fans are usually in the minority.

On here… you might be right, I’m new here. Maybe his supporters are just the loudest

Last game as a Leaf tonight. I wish we'd moved him and Tavares after that Columbus series. Wish we still had Kadri, Hyman, Marchment, Moore, McCann and half a dozen prospects we picked in the 1st round.

We couldn't have played this last decade worse in all honesty.

Shanahan knows that this group will never win the cup together. But he kept them for the sake of profits for MLSE. The guy deserves a swift kick to the nuts. That's what he has been giving us, the fans, the whole time.

Just feels like all he cared about was his salary. Imagine how much less stress he would've had if he had signed prior? Rather than banking on the playoffs and trying to squeeze every dollar from the organization.

Willie plays stress free because he signed and team friendly deal with term.

Is there any video of what Marner was doing on the 3-0 goal after his spinorama pass to Matthews? Cause the puck goes all the way through the neutral zones, Florida comes back with it a beat or two later and Marner is just in frame skating towards the puck carrier slowly. Did he sign an autograph or something?

I don’t agree with the money making motive. If they had traded Marner for a Jack Eichel in 2021 or 2022 or whatever year it was, the jersey sales would have been profitable too.

The belief in these guys was in good faith. I see the problem as being faith in the wrong people combined with an organization that over coddles.

Smiled and took a selfie with a fan in the stands is what I heard. Man of the people/community

IMO Willie plays stress free because he's immune to stress.

Ok, you're probably right. I have no issue with what you're saying, that's fine. My question is why did Shanahan become so soft? Why is he over coddling these guys? Why did he let Dubas give them everything they want pretty much? money, nmcs, signing bonuses, promises he will never trade them?

I think it’ll go something like Kessel, maybe slightly worse

My personal take is Shanahan grew up in the 70s and saw Ballard-Imlach take a sledge hammer to the Sittler McDonald team before it’s time and plunged the team into darkness for most of the 80s.

So he was trying to protect a very high end core so that they wouldn’t be dismantled and we suffer what if’s for the rest of time.

The way he has approached it has been frustrating and ineffective but I don’t think people will be wondering about the championship capability of a Matthews and Marner partnership moving forward or look back with misty eyes at what could have been.

I think you need to lay off the hooch before bedtime my friend! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Deal! Not that light NA beer crap though, please - find a place with some Czech beer at least
Made in Montreal, is 9.5% alcohol content too light for ya?

Eh, I was just kidding. Trying to find some humour in our situation, it's hard for me to take anything Leafs related too seriously right about now.

I feel like we're closing on what I said a couple of years ago was the worst case scenario - trade away all our assets in a desperate attempt to win now, and only start the rebuild when it's all burned down to the ground which means it'll take at least a decade before we're in the playoffs again. So another 2 years or so of this before the reality will be too stark to ignore, and there simply no other path other than rebuild from the ground up.

Shanahan is the architect of the post-lockout NuNHL, none of this should be a surprise to anyone. He was obsessed with Paul Kariya and changing the game to let guys like him thrive and get young players making money and having contractual freedom earlier. He proudly describes all this any time someone would put a microphone in front of him. And yeah he was tough on the ice but he started his career with a massive franchise changing offersheet before he had really proven all that much, stole a teammates wife, and got himself to the highest paying all-star team he could. He was always like this, he just hit and fought so no one really paid attention. If he had the same off-ice career as a 5’9 sniper that didn’t fight he’d have been remembered as a moody selfish primadonna.
