Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

I've said it many times - hard to believe any GM for a contender would be dumb enough to think Marner's worth top dollar. Some team that has no hope of playoff success that needs to sell tickets, that's another story and Marner might have to be willing to go to the equivalent of bumf*** NHL to get the contract he needs to feed his ego.
Actually I think he’ll leave the bum….. nhl place in the league.

Actually it was da other way around Ferris came in, i hear around 15.5M for 8 years, and Tre just LOLed him .. it was Shanny that iced Mitch and told him i think you need to check out FA .. this is exactly what should have occurred with Dumb*ass too .. let them bring on their offer .. then Ferris would have been shown to be da BS artist he is
Man, at $15.5 x 8, someone must have thought he was a gift from the heavens...embarrassing.

Could you even add him to Legends Row after he's retired? Given his Leafs tenure and the palpable bad blood between him, the fans, and increasingly the franchise I can't see it. Even after some time has passed.

I suppose the Raptors forgave Vince so anything is possible. Though in my personal opinion I wouldn't have but that's just me.
I don't see how he's proved himself worthy of a spot, I was just making fun of all the fanboys who have been talking as if he's earned his place there for years. Isn't it amazing how low some people have the bar set?

Mitch Marner. Legend. Sure thing.
As long as they put it about 25 feet away from the others and make the statue of him looking into the rafters with that dumb look on his face after his giveaway that ended up in the net, I’m fine with it.
Another option is to have him crying in the penalty box, either way works for me.

The skyward stare is Mitchy.

I think what you are saying here tracks.

8 playoff goals in 6 years for the tidy sum of almost $66m.

Part of me right now thinks Ottawa's chant would have been more scathing if it was -- "Marners NOT leaving".
Thankfully! His greatest contribution to the franchise is that he didn’t accept an extension and wouldn’t negotiate throughout the year. Can you imagine if he had an 8 yr extension after playing like he has this playoff.

If there ever was a look of resignation, it was after his spinorama turnover for goal 3. He knows in his heart of hearts he's not made for this. The shirt is too heavy, the playoffs are too hard and that was one of his last moments at Scotiabank center. Everyone knows it.

Small sample size, but he did step up at the Four Nations, twice.

So is it really that he just can't bring his "A" game when he needs to or is there something else going on?

With the smug, standoffish attitude he sometimes has shown it's entirely possible that he simply can't stand Leafs fans for hating on him and has just decided to be a belligerent little s**t and give a big f-you to the people that (indirectly) pay his salary.

I can see him moaning to his people "Why try to win for those ungrateful fans?" Wouldn't be surprised after he signs elsewhere he sends out a tweet taking a shot at Leafs nation. Or, god forbid, he wins a Cup there and does the same. He's probably already got a draft post ready to go.

Even with a deep run, good playoffs, my maximum signing would be 5 years. As of right now, I wouldn't sign him at all; if he manages to win us two more games, I'll likely change my mind.

If for once he and Matthews step up, sure, but you can’t count on it happening now.
If they win it’s unlikely it’s because those two were exceptional and the difference makers. There’s a saying with this core, if your best players are not your worst players, they have a chance.

The only justification is that he’s high up on a few all time leaderboards for this franchise. Though that speaks more to how awful this franchise has been at finding and retaining elite talent.

I remember the Dubas "offer sheets are everywhere" years. I think Mitchy will be hard pressed to get anything over 12M from anyone with any contention window open. Why would a contender want someone who doesn't contend?

I can see Ferris trying to sucker Tre into over paying Bennett for his grit but I doubt he is going to bite on that apple. He already traded him because he stunk in the regular season once before.

sing him, but let's not act like he knew Marner or had real thoughts about how to proceed, it was a quick hire and boom, welcome to the hockey nexus. It's too bad, because maybe Dubas would have made that move, although I question the return

The thing is, everyone in hockey knew about the Leafs playoff struggles. This is the biggest media market in hockey. This isn't something he would have come in not knowing.

He had two months to evaluate it before Marners NMC kicked in.

This should have been his #1 priority knowing what everyone in hockey knew about Marner and the Leafs playoff history. The fact he didn't deal Marner or press Shanny to deal Marner in that time period definitely makes him somewhat responsible.

I don’t know about Marner’s pass. He’s made passes like that before. You can see his reaction after the fact that he’s gutted.

He looked and made the pass and Matthews kind of blindly whiffed at it doing nothing to to really react to the situation.

It was a terrible decision to make the pass, and the pass was a bomb - but you're right. Matthews also completely missed it.

Florida picked it up at their own blueline. It isn't like Marner turned it over in his own slot or anything. Three players - including Rielly of all people on the wrong side of center - made the lazy long turns instead of getting back and that made it a three on two down low and Marner tried to keep his coverage options open between the trailer coming into the slot and the guy on the back door. The whole sequence was kicked off by Marner's bad decision/pass, but the reaction from everyone was garbage.

That all being said, unless this team suddenly turns back to the clock and plays like Game 1 and 2.. this series is over and the Core 4 HAS to be over.

The big problem is that they have emptied the cupboards and there won't be much to replace the ones who leave. The ones that are already signed are as much a problem.

It was a 4 game gimmick series where Marner found himself as the least played forward by game 3.

If Cooper was so impressed with Marner in game 1,2... he wouldnt have made him the forward with the least mins in game 3. Im fact the coaches admitted the changes in game 3 to the lineup were because they thought the team was too perimeter. So.... yea a major change was to drop Marner to the least played forward. By next year, some of the Canada forwards who played more than him in game 3 will be paid 1/2 what Marner wants! So it would seem Cooper seen exactly ehat we have seen over the past 9 years.

Sure Marner made a play 3v3 in OT in game 1, and couple plays in game 4... but him riding the pine by game 3 is more telling than his couple points in game 4. Also.. that lineup was the leagues best players... he doesnt have Mcdavid, Crosby, Mackinnon, Stone, Point, Marchand, to hide in the shadow of, or carry the play, or carry the leadership load.... anywhere he goes, for the money he wants, he is supposed to be THE GUY for all the above.

International hockey is completely different. I'd want Marner on the olympic team, but not on my NHL team.

Playoff hockey has a shit ton of interference bullshit you need to fight through and Marner simply doesnt have the mental make up to do it.

Oh if they don’t come back to Toronto it’s done, for sure.

What amounts to an 8-1 thrashing over two games is unacceptable.

I think realistically Marner walks and Matthews asks for a trade.

Even they must realize that to stay is to invite appropriate ridicule.

I can see Tavares remaining.
