Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

yeah, dream on. He said specifically "there are 2 players on the Leafs who will never win a Stanley Cup." Don't torture the obvious. That quote is a very very damning take. Let's just own up to it.

where did he say that? maple leafs daily (not credible) says some guy named Dan Powers of The Empty Netters Podcast

said this;

''I was talking to someone who knows Ryan O'Reilly very well, and he had talked about his time in Toronto and was like, 'certain people on this Toronto team will never win, and I don't want to be here anymore'. And he's not saying that about the people in [Nashville's] locker room right now.''

so its complete hearsay, didnt come from o'reilly himself

I'm sure putting a big winger on Matthews right side who's not afraid to get dirty along the boards and the front of the net, in addition to having Knies on his left, will completely change the dynamic of the line.

meh i'm not holding my breath

Mirtle this morning suggested that the reason the Leafs went to Marner with the Rantanen trade situation, was because they were already fed up with the relationship between him and the team.

Says the relationship, barring a comeback in this series and Marner having a huge round 3, is over.

Sounds like both parties have all but agreed to shake hands and go their own way.
They also wanted the much much much better player.

We get Rant instead of Marner, Matthews wristless we still win the chip this year.

That’s the thing with JT. Can he reshape his game as a 3C with probably PP2 usage? I think he can but his stats will take a huge hit, and that’s why I don’t see why it is a bad idea if he makes around 6mil but with a 4mil caphit due to deferred salary.

We just need a younger, hungrier in JT’s role. Or a few guys by committee. A lot of his money goes to Knies anyway.

Marner looks like a guy who hasn’t gone to the gym once since the draft combine.

The amount of bulking up you see on Easton Cowan since his draft day is more noticeable than Marner’s lack of having ever worked to bulk up.

I just imagine what Gary Roberts would say to this guy.
Same thing with Matthews, this is him 10 years ago:

This is him now:

Not holding my breath on it, but Marner is gone if the Leafs don't win this round. Obviously, there aren't talented, big RW's dropping from the sky...but a RW like Knies will change the dynamic of that line...you know, someone like Rantanen? :sarcasm:

All signs seem to point Mitch being checked out and done with this whole situation. Unless he has the games of his life this weekend he’s not gonna come back and the franchise won’t want him back.

What a sad ending.
Mirtle said the only way this reverses is if Marner and Matthews either have a great round 3 even if Leafs win this series. Winnng game 6 and 7 won't do anything if it's the supporting cast that comes through.
We are at that point you hope the others win it for them because you aren't going to get anything from these 2.

it is what it is. The Leafs of all teams can’t give him 13+ mill a year having seen what we’ve seen.

It doesn’t work here. Maybe it’ll work out for him somewhere else.

So they weren't fed up with him enough to try and move him while they could, it's just something new that happened this season? Calling B.S.

They went after Rantanen because they were afraid that all the money they were prepared to throw at Mitch wasn't enough to convince him to come back next year and finally decided they'd better try to get something for him.

One thing that's never brought up about Mitch anymore because everybody just gave up on it is how thin he is.

At the draft 10 years ago he was listed as 5'11 160, now he is listed as 6' 170, so basically he has gained no muscle in 10 years. It wouldn't surprise me if he was 5'10-11 and 155-165

Not everybody needs to be bulked up to play Hockey, but someone as soft as Mitch obviously could use another 10-20lbs of lean mass to help him not be so scared of contact. He's not willing to put in the work to do it and he is not willing to take the "supplementation" to get there.

He and Auston are both very slight and obviously could do better adding mass, again that would take hard training and supplementation if need be, but simply put they just are not willing to do what it takes to win.

That's actually pretty bad.

After last night's disaster Mitch is fully checked out.

The leadership group in general is under siege by the media/fans right now, they knew damn well their reputations couldn't afford another no-show like this but they just don't care. They have multi-million dollar lifestyles to retreat to afterward, they don't have to listen one second of noise if they don't want to.

I really hope Mitch has a Huberdeau-like falloff with his new team, f*** this kid anyway.

Relax, there’s 1-2 games to go - he can still change the narrative and become what he was born to be, the saviour (God) of Toronto. Predicting a 1+3 game in an OT win on Friday

He also didn't have much time when he came in, to be fair. The guy was trying to get his bearing, putting that in his plate was a bit much. It's why we kept Keefe too I suspect, he was getting grounded. The timing of Dubas leaving was awful for the franchise.

It’s not like the problems with the team are a well kept secret that needed to be investigated in depth from the inside. 2 week interview process where presumably Shanny lays out the goals and all the internal secret sauce + 1 month before NMCs kick in is enough time to get something done if you truly believe that moving a core piece and changing the culture is a top priority.

Every excuse is a complete cop out, the only thing that makes sense is that either Tre was willing to compromise on what he knew needed to be done because he wanted the high profile job, or he genuinely agreed with Shanny about running it back and trimming around the edges.

Biggest trade in a generation and you want him to consummate it in a couple weeks? There was a consequence in changing GM's at that critical point, I'm not blaming the new guy and besides what did Shanny think?
