Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Yea and my post was fairly critical of Michael as well. I don't understand why you think your favourite player should be absolved of any and all criticism because they perform in the playoffs. Nylander will never pay your bills and can handle a little criticism, it's okay dude. All I was speaking about was the bad precedent setting in the past, which is pretty factual. Why is anything about him that's not only praise so personal to some of you? We're all only supposed to sing your favourite player's praises and only criticize the other player who Leaf fans are always comparing him to? And vice versa for other posters too on the other side. I hope he keeps performing like he has been.
Wait, what? You’re the one trying to throw shade on a player by throwing around wild speculation while trying to use his father as some kind of outlier, and I’m the weird one. Now that’s weird. At least you got the weirdo CAPS LOCK on your side, good for you!

$14M!!!!

All game 5, 6 and 7 playoff stats (2019-2024):
  • Nylander 16 GP | 6 G | 7 A | 13 PTS
  • Matthews 14 GP | 6 G | 4 A | 11 PTS
  • Tavares 13 GP | 5 G | 5 A | 10 PTS
  • Marner 16 GP | 0 G | 5 A | 5 PTS
This is just plain disturbing... Does anyone remember that annoying poster who kept predicting this outcome since 2019? I think their board name started with an "A" and ended with a "y."

Time for this sort of discussion is the off-season, but I just don't understand this line of thought.

They aren't a better team if they lose Marner, and this summer's free agency pool is really, really thin.

Are you a better team with Marner out, but Ryan Donato and Gustav Nyqvist in? Jonathan Druin? Nik Ehlers?

That doesn't sound like you're coming out ahead.
They are playoff failures with him and the other 4 core guys so what do you suggest they do, run it back for another year to round out an even decade with them.
Every year there are teams better than the leafs in the regular season and playoff…….they don’t have Marner so how do they do it?

how am I throwing shade at him by just saying he set a bad precedent? It sounds to me like you want a Nylander cult, more than a discussion forum but hey if you're starting one I would like to join! :thumbu: Go Leafs Go!

Its the only thing that makes sense. Not signing over $500, 000 per year makes no sense. We all know he wants to be in Toronto, a few hundred thousand a year isnt worth the risk of Toronto suddenly changing their mind over another bad playoffs.

However 50+ million makes alot of sense.

Long term deal:
8 year contract @12 million per year ----> 96 million
Marner is 36 years old at end of deal.

‐--------------------------------------‐-----------
Bridge deal:
Three year deal @12 million ---> 36 million
+
eight year deal @14.5 ----->116 million

=
152 million total

Marner is a UFA at age 39

--------------------------------------------------
Difference = 56 million dollars

It also, guarantees him to be paid until 39 years old, where once he slows down or just plain doesnt want to play (probably gets paid majority of his money up front) he can then just sit on LTIR or maybe even get bought out and join front office.

If he signs for 8 years now. Hes a UFA at 36. Most players careers dont last this long and he could be playing for league minimum like Spezza and others if he wants to continue to play. Lets face it, Marner is never gonna play hockey for minimum pay. He doesnt like hockey enough.
That's assuming three years from now someone will be willing to pay him $14,5 for 8 years. If you think he won't be worth $14.5 at age 36, there's a fair chance GMs won't either.

I
No, but as the league cap continues to rise so do salaries. Otherwise the best of the best would be making like 7-8 million like they were 12 or so years ago.

That said, the talk of 13-14 mil is crazy imo
Agree. My point is that for this summer and as of now, MM should not make more than 12mil as the 5 players making that are truly elite, esp in playoffs except for AM

Welcome to the thread action jackson

Thanks. I'll leave this PWHL player discussion now - maybe he will sign with the Sceptres in July, because this man -child is not coming back to the leafs - as was evident when Treliving already tried trading him.

Sorry marner fans, enjoy the last 2 games

There really was no need for that pass. Just push it up the ice. Too afraid to take a hit so he curls back and then to make it a million times worse he throws it to nobody lol

He won’t be back. I can’t see them wanting him back
