Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Hmm lets compare:

2021-2022 Florida Panthers won Presidents Trophy as the team with most points in the season.

That year, Huberdeau led Florida in points by 27. Following a disappointing playoffs, Panther GM, Bill Zito, traded 29 year old Huberdeau because he reportedly did not like Huberdeau's soft playoff style.

Since being traded, Huberdeau hasnt produced more than 62 points in three seasons for the Flames.

Huberdeau is a pass first winger (with size).

After trading Huberdeau, Panthers go to finals back to back and could go a third consecutive time (hopefully not).

Hmm this sounds similar

Sound familiar, yep, happed a few years back. I think you were trying to make a point but only you would really know.

$14M!!!!

All game 5, 6 and 7 playoff stats (2019-2024):
  • Nylander 16 GP | 6 G | 7 A | 13 PTS
  • Matthews 14 GP | 6 G | 4 A | 11 PTS
  • Tavares 13 GP | 5 G | 5 A | 10 PTS
  • Marner 16 GP | 0 G | 5 A | 5 PTS

If only players were paid for playoffs, you might have a point, but they don't and you don't.

Your logic would tell people Hellebyuck shouldn't be one of the best paid goalies in the league, what are his stats on the road in the playoffs again? ;)

In your scenario they got better because they traded Huberdeau, but the reality is that they got better because they traded for Tkachuk. Who's our Tkachuk?
We pooched that... cap space is way more valuable than Marner at this point. His presence sucks overall — he's a whiny, entitled brat. He wants to be paid like a top-3 player in the world, but can't handle any criticism from the press or fans. He thinks expectations are too high for him and the team, yet he always wants to be the center of attention, last guy off the ice, last guy to hug the goalie, needs a special goalie hug (like Subban), now hugs the mascot after wins, writes and reads letters to fans, etc., etc. Most importantly he plays like a 2nd liner at best in the playoffs.

He's just a pile of unnecessary drama.

Marner makes a lot of high risk plays that lead to turnovers but he doesn’t mail it in. He does not Cheat you for effort
SO what is your take of the two playoff videos circulating of Marner "pulling the chute"..you know where he just stops pursuing a puck in the corner because he doesnt want to be hit?

I think this post will not age well after this series and this playoff.

Mitch was asked about his lack of shots, the reporter said Berube thought he could shoot more.

Of course Marner disagreed, and looked visibly shaken by the question. He did the teenager pout thing that he does... said he thinks his shooting is fine, the opponent did a good job blocking his shots last game (fails to acknowlege the two games before where he wasnt credited with a single shot attempt in game 4 and only 1 attempt in game 3). He also said, he is trying to get the pucks to sticks down low, "thats where his game is".

Lol.... this guy is brutal. Him against the world and very uncoachable.

I don't care when or where he gets paid, I also don't care about HellaCuck. I only care about the FACT that Mitchy disappears in games 5-7 when he's needed most.

Michael was known to move around on shorter contracts to get the best pay day he could. His older soon just signed the longest term one can to stay with the team that drafted him. I also wouldn’t really question the one player that actually contributes and is your top playoff performer for lots of years now, but what do I know.
Yea and my post was fairly critical of Michael as well. I don't understand why you think your favourite player should be absolved of any and all criticism because they perform in the playoffs. Nylander will never pay your bills and can handle a little criticism, it's okay dude. All I was speaking about was the bad precedent setting in the past, which is pretty factual. Why is anything about him that's not only praise so personal to some of you? We're all only supposed to sing your favourite player's praises and only criticize the other player who Leaf fans are always comparing him to? And vice versa for other posters too on the other side. I hope he keeps performing like he has been.

This bullkaka is hilarious. Not that he said it, I hope he meant it, actually. That anyone thinks this is a slight against the fans. Is this a real thing? It was obvious what he was talking about and it's not hating on fans. That's funny stuff though.
Myself, all I care about is what happens on the ice but it's easy to see how what he said could be taken the wrong way. It's not that he's hating on anyone, but ... I remember how much people appreciated what Gilmour said before the 93 playoffs. We made the playoffs for the first time in ages, we were obvious underdogs against a powerful Detroit team and yet Gilmour made a short speech on the ice after the last game of the regular season and said something like "we're not done, we're going to do something for you yet".

I remember thinking do what exactly? You're not saying you're going to beat Detroit are you, that just seemed so unlikely. But regardless of the fact that they came closer to winning the cup that year than at any other time during the last 50+ years, the important words are "for you" - he said the team is going to do something not for themselves, not for "the guys in the room", but for the fans.

I get the "guys in the room" mentality, but Marner should also understand that there's something to be said for doing it for the fans, we're the ones who pay him after all.

Good player but obviously I wouldn't build a playoff team around him

Funniest part is every time leafs fans have said this about a player they go on to make us eat shit and end up winning or they get a finals appearance.

I have to genuinely ask, what does that statement even mean? I hear it thrown around so often and to me, it doesn’t mean anything. Any player can go somewhere and win. Sometimes a situation just isn’t right for them.

There are only FIVE players with 12mil and more.

McDavid who broke that 7-8 yrs ago.
Mack who signed his 12.6mil contract 2-3 years ago.
AM who signed his 13.6mil deal last year.
Drai who signed his 14mil deal last year.
Rantanen who signed 12mil a few months ago.

Mack and Rantanen were the only two that signed 12mil or more without winning Rocket or Hart or Art Ross, but both of them did led their team to a Cup.

Mack won the Hart after his new deal while Rantanen is killing it in playoffs after signing his deal.

Do you honestly think MM deserves to be paid among these 5 players?

No, but as the league cap continues to rise so do salaries. Otherwise the best of the best would be making like 7-8 million like they were 12 or so years ago.

That said, the talk of 13-14 mil is crazy imo

Agreed. Rantanen just set the market and unless Marner does something truly remarkable before these playoffs are over, good luck arguing that he's worth as much as him, never mind more.

It’s also clear it’s an organizational philosophy that’s being shared so that they can block out external noise.
ITS CLEARLY NOT WORKING.

That's the whole point I'm on. The Sports Psych Dept of this Franchise needs to be completely eradicated and built anew. Whatever they've been feeding our guys has not worked - but you can see the impact Craig and Tree are having slowly but surely. Need it take official hold over the next 2/3 games. That's for dayummmm sure.

Again it’s not Marner’s fault Rantanen decided to take less than Market value. Rantanen would have been paid more than 12 on the open market, anyone denying that is just being delusional. Rantanen found a spot he likes, got some front loaded bonuses and copped because he wasn’t looking to be on his fourth team in less than 6 months. So he chose security.

You could argue that maybe Marner should also consider factors and take 12 as well or less than market value for Toronto. But just because Rantanen chose to, doesn’t mean Marner has to or Toronto is even pushing him to do so. I think Toronto is more than comfortable paying Marner more than Rantanen.

Why do you think this is the case?

His agent was likely well aware of what his clients value was. There might have been a hair of a discount given Texas doesn't have state income tax, but 12ish seems right around what is expect a star at his level to get.

Iml some folks,.including a couple on talk radio, have been letting their imaginations run a bit wild with the cap increasing about the value of some of these guys
