Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Perhaps the team doesn't feel he alone is the problem and after finally winning a Division aren't ready to move on from the guy who led the Team in scoring by 20 points and plays in all situations.

It doesn't sound like you want him to stay at any cost but if you look at it objectively you can see why the Team wouldn't be so quick to just let him walk.
Hmm lets compare:

2021-2022 Florida Panthers won Presidents Trophy as the team with most points in the season.

That year, Huberdeau led Florida in points by 27. Following a disappointing playoffs, Panther GM, Bill Zito, traded 29 year old Huberdeau because he reportedly did not like Huberdeau's soft playoff style.

Since being traded, Huberdeau hasnt produced more than 62 points in three seasons for the Flames.

Huberdeau is a pass first winger (with size).

After trading Huberdeau, Panthers go to finals back to back and could go a third consecutive time (hopefully not).

Hmm this sounds similar

I already stated it, it's good.

Yea he very clearly was. Both guys have some* fans that are way over the top and seem more interested in the players than the team. I don't even think either of them are that bad but most people will not stand up to an overbearing father figure trying to live vicariously through his son in that situation. Michael Nylander had a pretty bad reputation around the league it seems.

his dad was very clearly involved though in the contract situation. There's a lot of supporting media coverage for this if you want to dig through it, probably just as much as there is for Paul Marner being involved in Marner's career. I highly doubt a 22 year old Nylander wanted to risk missing a whole season of hockey because he was getting 6 million instead of 6.9 million. He set the record for the longest holdout in the cap era. I don't blame either Marner or Nylander for how they handled the contract situations and assume overbearing/narcissistic fathers more so for several reasons anyway but if we're calling a spade a spade, the precedent was set by William/his team in all of this to never negotiate, never bend, and never sacrifice a little in contract for the team.
I wasn't disputing that Michael was involved in the earlier signing, but I haven't heard anything about him being involved in the extension.

And of course agents are another level of chaos.

It's all hearsay and 'someone reported that someone said something', but it does look as though Willy is his own man now.

In your scenario they got better because they traded Huberdeau, but the reality is that they got better because they traded for Tkachuk.

Who's our Tkachuk?

Both Draisatil and Rantanen are both top 5 in goals and points in playoff scoring past 9 years combined.,

However if you ignore how poor Marner is in comparison via playoff stats even at regular season points Marner finishes behind LD and MR.

View attachment 1035658

Contracts Status:

Season 2024-25
================

Draisaitl @ $8.5 mil AAV
Rantanen @ $9.5 mil AAV
Marner @ 10.9 mil AAV.

Due to a Clueless Dubas the Leafs are already been screwed by massive over-payment in comparison to return on investment production come playoff time.

Season 2025-26
=====================

Draisatl : 8 years @ $14.0 mil AAV
Rantanen : 8 years @ $12.0 mil AAV
Marner : ???? (Should be less that $12 mil)

I see no reason why Treliving has to double down on stupidity of past over-payment to retain Marner, Where previously Marner had the highest $$$ salary on past contract all expiring at end of 2024-25, where now he should have the lowest of the 3 players here in comparison when all contracts begin for the 2025-26 season at new rates.

Marner does not outproduce Leon & Mikko regular season nor playoffs so WHY would his contract need to be HIGHER?
Because of the varying number of games played, I think ppg is more appropriate when discussing playoffs.

Even at that, forwards with 40+ games over the last 5 playoffs, Draisaitl and Rantanen are 2nd and 3rd, Willy is 7th, Matty 10th (tie), and Mitch 13th. Somewhat surprisingly, Pastrnak is 16th.

Imagine saying for all those years that the Marner haters are just a small group of people online who nobody even knows exists or pays attention to but all of a sudden now thinking they have a big enough voice to directly drive him out of Toronto.
No kidding. That tanks the narrative that all leaf fans except the ones here love Marner. lol

It's probably because of the last contract circus, his dad, and just his personality in general (seems whiny, constantly says the wrong things to the media). And when he says things like "we only care about the people in the room" he's implying he doesn't care about the fans so whaddya expect?

Matthews is also getting a lot of heat, but it seems obvious that he's injured so that's probably why he's not getting as much heat as Marner.

I'm not impressed at all. He played maybe his worst game ever in game 3, then we're down 3-0, the season is as good as over, and he finally wakes up. Not ... impressed.

You don't know that he's leaving, neither does anyone else here. If he does leave though, I agree it won't be because of the fans, that IMHO is one of the dumber narratives being sold in these parts lately.

We're all hoping. GLG!!

Meant to say IF he leaves, just forgot to put IF there

I said a few months ago that it was entirely possible that his newfound calmness and composure was because he had already decided he was leaving, or at the very least testing free agency.

I've long been of the opinion that he's not coming back.

And you know what. It's not the end of the world. You know what else? It is entirely on Shanahan. We all know Kyle was going to trade one and I don't doubt it was Nylander.

JT goes down to 7-8m 3yrs
MM frees up 11m extra.

That's 14m or so. Knies needs paid and man does he ever look good.

Real big surprise that CAPS LOCK likes this message full with guessing and slashing of Willy. Very big surprise
idk who that is but all of the guessing was to be charitable to W Nylander. Everything else was factual but if you have something to the contrary I'll read it.

Probably the biggest game of Marner's career.

The next 2-3 games of this series likely determines his future in TO.

Leafs beating the Cup Champs and advancing to the final 4 might logical keep the core together longer.

If Marner and Leafs flame out and are eliminated I predict Marner is all but done..

He is going to need some real impactful contribution here, IMO

idk what we're even arguing at this point then but all of this is hearsay at some level for all players. Some small details out of the whole picture become very evident though to the public eye and are unfair to ignore in related conversations

MARNER better play his tail off. If we lose because some of his antics I am going to sue MLSE for the whiplash I know I will get in my recliner. Probably thrash out a concussion, freaking shaken baby syndrome for an adult.

Michael was known to move around on shorter contracts to get the best pay day he could. His older soon just signed the longest term one can to stay with the team that drafted him. I also wouldn’t really question the one player that actually contributes and is your top playoff performer for lots of years now, but what do I know.

You can ask Marner to produce more and do more with the puck and be braver and all those things.

But I don't think anyone can really question Marner's effort - he never mails it in. Always works his ass off.

This bullkaka is hilarious. Not that he said it, I hope he meant it, actually. That anyone thinks this is a slight against the fans. Is this a real thing? It was obvious what he was talking about and it's not hating on fans. That's funny stuff though.

I’ve never understood why fans are so sensitive to it. The reality of it is, most of these guys literally do not give a shit about us. We care more about them than they care about us. They appreciate it us and the support we give them but playing hockey in their job, their teammates are the guys the go to war with every night. Of course they are playing for one another, it’s not a slight on the fans at all. It’s also clear it’s an organizational philosophy that’s being shared so that they can block out external noise.

Not sure I would agree with this at all. He mails it in at times.

Except Nylander, he rides the Rocket and listens to Common People by Pulp allegedly.

How does this even make sense / have any relevance to my post?

Taking public transit means you deeply care about the fans or does it just mean it’s the fastest way to get to arena on a game day lol?

It means he is ready and willing to mix it up with people. He is an open book and willing to be available and isn't in witness protection like Marner.
