The fact that he had a pregnant wife and the impending birth of his child was down to the final week or two, it's idiotic of anybody to hold it against him for refusing to accept a trade to Carolina.

Any fan that is bitter at Mitch Marner for turning down that deal is a fool. Whether Marner leaves or stays, he had every right to turn down that deal and anybody with even a faint clue of what real life is all about realizes that he wasn't going to choose to leave his wife and go to another country to work at that time.

That specific trade. Of course. He openly made it known he wasn’t going to accept any trades in last June. They weren’t expecting last June if you do the math. The team has approached him about contracts negotiations trades and he refused.

He refused to discuss any trades or any negotiations. The team has no idea what he wants. 10 million 15? Refusing to sign?

Once you start hitting 13 and beyond you're in the truly elite of the league, which he simply isn't part of. And I say this as a fan of the guy

#1 is the biggest reason why I can’t get behind you at all right now.

They asked him at the 11th hour, if the trade had been in the works for weeks and he had time to stew on it, I could probably get behind you, but it was a spur of the moment ask, the leafs were in first place in the east at the time as well. Why would he leave his wife or teammates?

Its fewr of missing out ... its not just 1 million. Guaranteed the hold up has been term, just like it was last contract. He wants a 3 year deal for 12. So he can land one more at around 15x8 when hes 30 or 31, that gives him a guaranteed huge paycheque of around 156 million until he's 38-39 years old. Rather than 12x8 that takes him to 36 years old and 96 million.

That 60 million more. Not chump change.

I might be off a bit on numbers but it definitely what he wants.

Come on Matthews cant keep getting these Uncle Marleau approved short contracts and not the Teams leading point getter!!

I've also said this same thing too.

Mitch wants to bridge for 2-3 years, not go big now. He's made it blatantly and abundantly clear that his #1 goal is to make as much money as possible. That doesn't happen if you sign 8 years right now.

Marner is a very good star player. He's not the best of the best.

As much as I like Nylander, it's worth remembering he was the 1st guy out of the big 3 to sit out the majority of 1 season for an extra half a million dollars to get Pasternak money while having not been Pasternak level. Nylander led the way for the rest of them here. Isn't it amazing we draft a crazy skilled core in Marner, Nylander, and Matthews and 2 of the players have rare parents who rather than be grateful or stay out of it are going to make sure their son haggles for every penny they can get and the other guy is always playing injured?

1.) the leafs have tried to engage numerous times about numbers and whether or not he wants to even stay at all with zero response

2.) the leafs presented his camp with multiple possibilities about a trade if he doesn’t want to stay. With no response.

this was not an 11th hr request. It was a last ditch effort to try to future plan. Rantanen would have come and extended Marner said no. Still won’t talk about an extension.

So for an entire year he has refused to be traded. Refused to say he wants to Stay. Refused to discuss an extension. Blocked a trade and still refused.

He may sign for a great deal. But it’s bizzare. If you want to stay, stay. If you want to leave leave.

As of now, would GMs think MM is just on the wrong team, and if he is on the right team, he is going to do what Rantanen is doing or do they think MM is just MM.

I do think at least one GM in the league will offer MM over 12mil, just hope thats not Tre. Unless Leafs win the Cup.

If any of those players were to sign this summer they would sign for considerably more but roughly the same percentage.
There are lots of great players in the league, Marner is one of them but yes a step below the very elite.

This makes no sense. The standard of “being mad” isn’t “if it’s in my contract”.

The contract governs how much the team pays him and whether he can be traded. No one is advocating he should have been traded against his will or his conditions not honored.

The team should honor it.

Fans have a right to be mad. He doesn’t have to care.

There is nothing in law that says you wife/husband can’t cheat on you in your own bed. Doesn’t mean you can’t be mad

The Rantanen (signed March 2025) and Draisaitl (signed Sept 2024) deals both signed recently & both applied to begin in the 2025-26 season, which would be no different then Marner's next contract. All 3 players have current contracts for 2024-25 and all begin starting next year 2025-26.

All start at the same time regardless if they were signed in advance as was allowed via the CBA so Cap hit % based on start date compared to Salary Cap Ceiling for 2025-26 would be comparable for all based on same facts.

The NHL salary cap ceiling for the 2025-26 season is projected to be $95.5 million.

The signing date argument only a Red Herring that doesn't apply since all encompass the same beginning date of July 1st, 2025, making it irrelevant to any logical discussion. Why would any player sign in advance IF you could wait until the last minute and then gain financially and ignore comparable stats, using a fictions argument about CH% being different for ALL deals that cover the same time period and same Salary cap ceiling figures?

Mitch Marner is just not as uber elite as he's trying to price himself, and it causes a lot of ego driven unhappiness. He's got a 6 year old contract and he's 12th highest paid player in the league. He's comfortably what, a top 15-20 player in the league? Not good enough for this boy.

Sometimes your top guys, they're looking to get too good of a chance sometimes instead of just putting the puck on net," he said Monday. "I think there's times where we could put more pucks on net at angles, bad angles, just firing it in there with people going to the net. You never know, it goes off somebody, rebounds or anything like that.

"I think Mitch could just be a little bit more direct in that area. He has the puck a lot, we know that, and he's got to look to put more pucks to the net. I get what he's trying to do, he wants to upgrade his chance, upgrade the chance. He's a passer first, we know that, but we need him to shoot pucks too. So yeah, I agree with you on that. Two games without a shot, he's got to shoot the puck."
