Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

You'd be genuinely shocked to see some folks' ability to deny reality right in front of their eyes.
It’s beyond crazy lol I would say delusional but I’m pretty sure they themselves know what they’re spewing isn't true

Marner has always been a ME person rather than a TEAM person when it comes to putting his own financial well being above the team in a Salary Cap World.

He has shown his true colors and a leopard never changes its spots.

I would be the least surprised person on the planet when Marner seeks top $$ on the UFA market, and then after signing elsewhere over money, tells everyone how he felt disrespected by BT asking him to waive his NMC to trade him, as the reason he was leaving Toronto, while hiding behind that to cover up his own greed.
There comes a point in Toronto where someone has to draw a line in the sand and make decisions in the best interest of the team and based on Marner's rumoured demands letting him walk away, rather than doubling down would be Leafs best interest.

BT should offer a take it or leave it deal, and then hold the line. Being able to use the free cap space created by allowing him to walk could be used to re-sign budding star Matthew Knies and build more depth throughout the team. IMO

I agree but clearly the best playmaker in the world isnt helping so split em up

You cannot be saying this with a straight face? How many 10 bell chances has both Marner and Knies given Matthews and he sailed it 5 feet above the goalie and hit the glass. The argument that Matthews isn’t getting set up is wild. Matthews has had nothing BUT chances and he can’t finish. That’s on him, not his linemates.

In past years I can definitely agree Marner may have been the issue but I think this year people still using that as an excuse are just afraid to admit that Matthews has been garbage and it’s easier to blame Marner than admit out loud, we got duped by Matthews and now we might lose Marner for nothing. It’s nothing more than a coping mechanism, get pissed off at Marner so that when he does leave, everything is his fault and it’s an easier pill to swallow that we are about to lose a good player for nothing.

I can't really remember any chances that were spectacular. I think maybe one post. That's about it.

Welcome to dealing with linemate problems. Holmberg must have blown some 10 bell chances playing beside Nylander. You make it work with what you have if you're truly a gamebreaker.

Where does this place him then, relative to peers league wide?

Marner 81 games.

Mcdavid 67, Draisaitl 71

Lets look at p/60. Marner is 11th. Linemate Matthews is 15th. Tavares, Marners other center is 17th.

Marner is after Robert Thomas, Hagel, significantly after old man Ovechkin, someone named Protas, Kaprizov (closest teammate 63rd) and just above 7.1 million Kyle Connor, 5.5 million Sean Monahan and 7.7 million Jason Robertson.

Pastrnak is number 1 and closest teammate is 46th. Mcdavid and Draisaitl dealt with injuries all year, and still are above Marner.

Given thay Marner has more productive linemates and received substantially more money on his first RFA contract... his placement is pretty pathetic on this list. When he was given his 11 million it was certainly expected he would hit Kucherov like numbers....not never improve on his 2019 stats. Add his pathetic playoffs, him being tiny and soft, him being a huge distraction almost every year (very bad speaker too).... and playing thr least important position. Etc etc.

Marners agent last negotiations said they wanted to repaid for not receiving rookie bonuses on the ELC. So... should Marner now repay on this contract the extra money he was paid and didnt live up to the last 5 years? Isnt that how it works Ferris and Marner?

Exactly and Matthews isn’t a game breaker, definitely agree Marner should just take over since Matthews has no interest in doing so or his injury is preventing him from doing so, which ever excuse is acceptable right now

Well we know for a fact that mikko would have signed here and Marner blocked the trade.

So it is relevant. It’s not comparing him to kucherov or something.

If Marner leaves. He will be Tavares x1000 here

No he won’t, I don’t think anyone is going to hate him like Tavares was hated. People will be okay with it. How many people are begging Marner to stay right now?

I remember someone changing their spots and throwing their lot in with the anti-Marner crowd after their posts were getting almost universally trashed.

Guess we have a new breed of leopard.

If we lose to the Panthers, won't you be convinced that this core will never get it done and the Leafs need to go in a different direction? I would also consider shopping Matthews. Everything and anything should be on the table.

Kyper said, they are more talented than the Panthers but they are not as good. Let's see if he is right.

1 of the two goals he scored was a gimme that Mitch gave him what im saying to you is to save the it’s Matthews fault not Mitch’s split them up and well see cause last years playoffs was the same thing and we know how that turned out Matthews looked good Mitch didnt

We just need to neuro link his wrists to his brain again and get him off the drugs or whatever he is using to deal with it right now.

Lol welcome to playing with typical hockey linemates and not one of the nest goal scorers ever to play the game.

This is why you dont pay 13% of the cap to a one dimensional offensive player.

Mackinnon, Mcdavid, even Kucherov are capable scorers and passers.

Marner cant adjust to scorer... hell he cant even manage a damn shot on net.

And im noy seeing Marner set up Matthews like your stating here. Wristing floaters from the blueline isnt a high danger set up.

If he was setting up his linemates as much as you imply... Berube wouldnt be critical of his play to the press.

Refusing to be traded for the best playoff performer of the decade.

Refusing to discuss contract or move.
Refusing to sign.

Ya people will be mad. He got paid top dollar. The red carpet rolled out. Protected at every turn then leaves?

Insanity

As anyone with a few management brain cells knows, you cannot let the inmates (and their agents) run the asylum, or chaotic failure ensues. Unfortunately, that mental midget Shanahan abdicated his responsibility so Kyle could impose his own vision, which, sad for us, meant putting Franchise interests second and crazy inmate demands first. And here we are...

His legend grows with every game.
So weird when Marners biggest supporters are picking on Matthews or Nylander in other threads, but have never once said a critical thing about Marner in the Marner thread.

Look I expect more from Matthews... but Berube has made it clear hes dealing with injury.

Ive also beem critical of Nylander in the past. And am not afraid to admit that hes frustrating when he seems to take games off.

Not to mention when Marner is stinking up the joint they suggest hes possibly injured...even though it never comes out that he was.

However... we know Matthews is injured, yet here they are not allowing it to be used as an excuse for Matthews.
