Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

I am very curious to see what he ends up signing. I don’t think any cup contending team signs him for more than 13mill. I bet you it is around 10-12mill for cup contending teams. Which is going to really piss off leaf fans more
Him going from being determined to get overpaid on a short term deal to suddenly being willing to take a pay cut is about as likely as him suddenly not being afraid of physical hockey.

If he signs for lower cap hit...its because its the most that particular team in the city he was comfortable with would pay him...not because he said, "hey how about I take less" to win. But i wouldnt put it past him to try and say it to the media, that he ultimately decided on less than he wanted in order to win.

Though...its a bit of a double edge sword because he wont be any more likeable to this fan base if it comes out his demands in Toronto exceeded what "he took in order to win with a different team", especially after he blocked the Rantanen deal at the deadline.

Doesnt matter...he most definitely is trying to get the highest contract he can possibly get.

Im willing to bet his demands were 13.5x3.... and a full NMC.

Toronto (Shanahan) probably offered 13.5x8 with a limited NMC.

I dont think Toronto will back off a limited NTC with him. They absolutely cannot be locked into a NMC with him.

Bennett would provide a helluva lot of what we’re missing though.

If we could also sign Ekblad and trade a defenseman for a good middle six forward that’s a substantial shift.
He’d be a Lone Ranger with Domi and McCabe and wouldn’t make much of difference. The Leafs could use him if the got some top 6 talent.

The latest rumour on Knies is he wants 7M for 3-5 years. Might want to wait on the team friendly talk there. Sounds like he's going down the same path as all of the other big names that want max dollars on minimum term.

I think it's pretty obvious that Marner is done with this city. There's no game being played here, I think behind closed doors he has told management that he wants out.

If it was $7 million for 5 years for Knies' year 23, 24, 25, 25, 27 aged seasons that's not that team "unfriendly."

It's essentially the Nylander deal which was signed in 2018 under a much lower cap, when Nylander was a 20 goal, 60 point player... Knies had 29 goals and 58 points and is performing like a top 10 pick. He's the 9th highest scorer from the 2021 draft.

If it isn't about money for marner, then sign marner for nylander money, and trade nylander. We get a change in the DNA, and get value back we can use (probabaly the highest for nylander right now).

I'm not sure why you think it isn't about the money for Marner - we haven't seen anything that would give you that impression.

- Marner has already (apparently) refused to sign for 13.5, so why would he sign for 11.5?
- Nylander has an NMC, signed here for max term, and loves the city - how do you trade him?
- The "change in the DNA" is supposed to be a positive change. signing Marner and trading Nylander would both be negatives.

(I do agree that Nylander has a much higher trade value than Marner, but this has probably always been true, and isn't necessarily a reason to trade him.)

Treliving was speaking about the DNA of the team and you could feel he was taking about replacing Marner with player(s) that are better equipped to winning in the playoffs and playing a style of play that allows a team to compete against the best.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs' season came to another disappointing end, once again failing to advance past the second round, speculation surrounding major changes within the organization has reached an all-time high. Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving has hinted that changes are on the horizon, acknowledging that the team's current DNA is in need of a fresh perspective.

One player who appears all but certain to move on is superstar winger Mitch Marner, a pending unrestricted free agent. Now, a new, serious bidder for his services may be emerging. If he could swap a playoff warrior like Sam Bennett to replace a playoff paper tiger like Marner he would do it in a heart beat.

Going to be interesting to see how BT re-invest that $11 mil cap space that Marner once occupied and the type of Size, Grit, Heart and compete level to change the teams DNA.

Not sure if you watched his post-press conference media scrum (I summarized it in the Treliving thread), but he talks consistently about the need to get to the inside, and to take advantage of those rare moments where you do get inside against good teams.

He also referenced how Dallas were rolling, but now can't score.

Both of those feel like thinly veiled acknowledgements that while they love Marner, they don't really think he's a fit here anymore in terms of the style of play.

Basically every player would want to play for Vegas, Tampa, Florida, Dallas. They are both contenders and low state tax. I'm surprised Vegas wouldn't offer Theodore for Marner though

Lol... God on skates wasn't even worth Theodore to a real contender.

Theodore is a good, not great, hockey player. He's more comparable to Rielly than Hedman or Makar. He's not even the best defenseman on their team.

Marner for Theodore screams of Hall-Larsson 2.0.

But at least the Leafs would have gotten something back. Theodore is a lot better than the nothing they're getting now. Another master class in asset management Toronto Maple Leafs style.

The cap space is valuable assuming they spend it wisely on adequate replacements for the anointed one.

For some reason I'm skeptical they'll pull this off. They've botched virtually everything they've tried since drafting Matthews. There's always a first time for everything and I suppose this could be it.

I don't expect anything but continued buffoonery from a team that couldn't even get a 4D for the glorious revered one though.

So to recap.

If the guy who wants to leave (and get the bag) decides to stay and it isn’t about money, you sign him and turnaround to trade the guy who already committed.
