Agree. It's definitely going to be towards 5-10 years. It took Ottawa at least 5 years to get back into the mix, and they hit on a LOT of their draft picks over the past decade.
A) Senators drafted since 2015 who have played 100+ games in the NHL (
bolded still with team):
- 2015 - Chabot, White, Daccord
- 2017 - Formenton, Batherson
- 2018 - Tkachuk, Bernard-Docker
- 2019 - Pinto, Kastelic
- 2020 - Stutzle, Sanderson, Greig, Kleven (96 games played)
B) Leafs drafted since 2015 who have played 100+ games in the NHL:
- 2015 - Marner, Dermott
- 2016 - Matthews, Grundstron
- 2017 - Liljegren
- 2018 - Sandin, Durzi, Holmberg
- 2019 - Robertson
- 2021 - Knies
The Senators have drafted 13 players who have played 100+ games in the NHL since 2015 versus the Leafs drafting only 10. More importantly, of the 13 players, 8 are still with the Senators versus 4 out of 10 for the Leafs.
Throw in the fact that Leafs have ZERO blue chip prospects from the 2021 - 2024 draft years other than Cowan, and the picture is very bleak. Throw in the fact that they also don't have their first rounders for the next few drafts, and you're looking at at least 3 seasons post-Matthews to restock the draft cupboards (no assets to trade other than Nylander), another 3-4 to draft them, and 2-5 years for them to materialize.
That's 8-12 years lol, and assuming that you've hit on your draft picks which is a huge if given recent drafting...
