Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

Everybody is doing their job but the players that have stood out so far have been 88, 67 and 23.

Bob's got to have that Marner seeing eye, knuckle puck from the half boards in a 3-3 game, seconds after the Panthers tied that game. Some teams may have folded after that goal. Leafs winning the battle of the goalies so far.
I'd praise the defence as a unit as well, they've been solid! But 67 is at PPG, just wow!. Seems like only yesterday when people were saying he was so bad in his first game that he should be benched for Robertson. Good think Berube was patient, he's been a huge part of the story so far. GLG!!

I'm past the point of even caring this deep in the playoffs.

As long as Mitch is PPG or better and pairing up with Matthews to create a legit shutdown duo, it's good enough.
I don't care if Mitch has 2 points or 20 at this point. As long as we're winning, it's all good! GLG!!

TBH, I thought Florida was definitely driving the play for most of the game and Woll though not perfect, was by far our best player. 2nd best was Nylander and after that I dunno, maybe Pacioretty?

The Matthews line was IMHO pretty bad. I mean I'm thrilled that Marner lucked out for that goal that saved us last night but objectively speaking, that line was outplayed pretty badly. I thought the Tavares line was our best one but they weren't amazing or anything and the more I think about it, the more I feel like Woll stole that one for us. But hey, we got a PP goal and Woll was amazing, special teams and goaltending getting it done in the playoffs, I have no problem with that whatsoever. And while on one hand, the play of the Matthews line leaves a lot to be desired, on the bright side we're winning games and it's easy to see how we can be quite a bit better than we've been so far.

I love how were winning in different ways. Whether it's Nylander's heroics, the depth guys chipping in (Pacioretty!!), the D blocking dozens of shots or the goalie stealing one, so far these playoffs have been a complete team effort. GLG!!

The best leafs player was Tanev

Woll was good and be bettet than bob but i don't think he stole anything. The D in front had been amaizing most part of the game.. Mccabe struggling a bit at the beggining, rielly did a pretty bad play on marchand goal but overal they had been great

And yeah matthews line wasn't great but contrairly to what we saw in the past where they was looking good on the ice but unable to put the puck in, right now the puck goes in and that's what really matter.

I understand Mitch playing over a point per game (10 pts in 8 games) and scoring the game winner in game 2 of the second series is problematic for some but if you were actually a fan of the team you should be enjoying the crow he has consistently shoved down your throat this post season. It is okay to be wrong. It is okay to enjoy life. Leafs have won 6 out of 8 games. Mitch is only behind Willy in points on the team this post season while going head to head against 2 Selke level players. He set up the game winner in game 1 of the 2nd series as well. He is a set up man that is picking up points and scoring clutch goals.
Honestly, the whole season, too. He's been the best player for us all year and put us on his back through a stint with a lot of tough injuries. The guy has been nothing but great all year long. People here don't like to be wrong.
Haters just can't stand it when Marner plays well and gets some praise. :blah:
They definitely cannot.
Im so tired of hearing this BS about elite defensive talent. If they are getting paid like McDavid/Drai/MacKinnon - this isnt a valid excuse.
He's not paid like them and won't be paid like them. Check cap percentages at time of signing and get back to us, if he gets 13 million, that's a full cap percentage point below Draisaitl and way behind MacKinnon and McDavid (and Matthews, for that matter).
Nobody can replay that game and focus Marner the individual and say. He is a game changer.
Scored the game winner, assisted on it in game one. Hasn't changed a game yet.

While Rantanen was racking up a hattrick for Dallas in a 3-2 win their series, it was nice to see Marner find a way to contribute to the Leafs win.

Going to be really difficult for Marner to ask our GM for more than the $12 mil X 8 years in a direct comparison to the player Treliving tried to trade him for 1-1.

Impossible. Rantanen is way better

Maybe "stole" is too strong but I still say he was our best player. Not worth arguing about, I respect your opinion and I'll leave the bickering to others. Cheers!

Contract discussion can be interesting, but IMHO now's not the time. GLG!!

Rantanen leads the playoffs in scoring with 8 goals in 8 playoff games. That is more than Marner (2) & Matthews (2) and Tavares (3) combined who have scored 7.

Carolina should have asked for Free Willy Nylander in trade instead of Marner if they wanted a high impact comparable playoff performer. :wg:

Willy @$11.5 mil X 8 years vs Mikko @ $12 mil X 8 years are comparable contracts and term.

Context certainly matters. When did said players sign? What did the projected cap look like going forward? Was it a flat cap? Also worthy to note. Matthews got a blank cheque and has a total of 2 points in the second round . None of them being goals.
That line would sink without him dont for a second get it twisted Hes the defensive conscience on that line he breaks the pucc out of the zone not anyone else trust me on that his defensive impact is franchise mode

It’s the pretending that erks me if players aren’t performing to standard dont pretend they are players can win us a game and still not have a good game it’s the delusion that disturbs me at times

Woll had been great for sure, no doubt about it. Tanev stole at least one goal in a great A chance to disallowed florida shooting in an empty net

Maybe saved an other one later by cleaning a free puck in front an open net

Carlo probably stole a goal by sliding on the ice to block the net

Mccabe also probably save one by clearing a free puck with his hand out of the crease...

Like i said the D in front had been amaizing to protect Woll...

Honestly i don't leafs had any mvp for that game, it was 100% a team win where everybody no exception contribute

This playoff run so far has been exactly that - team effort where everyone is contributing. And I'm so happy for Woll, Stolarz getting hurt might even turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Not that I don't love the guy but I just had my doubts about him being able to go it alone for two months. I had a feeling that if we're going to go all the way, we're going to need Woll at some point, I didn't expect to be proven right this soon but whatever, I hope Stolarz is 100% soon and Berube will be in the enviable position of having two aces to choose from.

how about that skate to bacchand shot in tight 🤌🏾
That was unreal. I watched the replay about 6 times during the intermission, still couldn't see how he did that but that was some serious high end skill on display, not sure how many players in the league are capable of making that play.

I loved Don Cherry back in the day but man, thinking back to him ranting about what a mistake it was to draft Nylander puts a smile on my face. :)

It's had been a huge issu by the past, if the core 4 didn't do everything... They was losing for sure

This season

laughton line with OEL open the gates
Domi scoring GWG gm 2
Benoit GWG gm 3
Pacioretty GWG gm 6

this series gm 1 had been won by leafs 6

gm 2 patch tie it in second pp wave
Domi go ahead goal
defensively everybody no exception and even Nylander who was taking shift off in defensive end at time are 100% engaged in the defensive end

That's reducing the pressure off the shoulder of core 4 and gave them a chance to make the difference at the end.

Nylander did it in gm 1 and to tie it gm 2, Marner did it on both GWG with 2 great play gm 1 and 2

I said it in an other topic but honestly right now leafs are looking like washington when Trotz step in and made understand to the player than if you really want to win, you gonna need to play that way and only that way if you want to have a chance for it and that's exactly what leafs look like under Berube. Team system, still playing that way whatever what and you will be reward and player bought it and got the result now.

You indicate Marner vs Fla on both GWGs....and say nothing about Knies on either of those two plays?

Laughable!

Knies has been the Leafs second most effective forward and you haven't even mentioned him.

Laughable #2.

1- It's a team play and yeah Knies had been pretty good but that's doesn't removing anything Marner does. Knies had been able to score game one because Marner did a pretty good play to send him in breakaway. Marner had been to score with an accurate shot because Knies made a good screen. Both come together. That remove anything of what Marner did the same way than a lot of what Nylander created last 3 game came from Pacioretty game, that's removing anything of what Nylander did at all.

You can't do all alone on the ice and yes you need your teammate and its true to every single player in the NHL.

Im fine with Marners performance so far. Not superstar but good enough to help the team win.

However, his play still has its warts. He doesnt have rhe speed to create odd man rushes and him not going to the net makes it hard to create offense.

Play 1)
I mentioned this in the GDT in game 1. There was a play, where Marner had the puck and was on a path to the net, he passed it to Matthews.... and instead of continuing on that path to the net, Marner slowed down considerably and came to a stop to the right of the net...

While this happened Matthews passed the puck back to Knies...who was around the top of the slot. Knies was able to get a shot off. However Marner had came to a stop to the left of Bob and because nobody made any attempt to take away his eyes, he easily saved it.

Compare that to Marners goal yesterday.

Play 2) Knies wins a board battle in the corner to the right of Bob and pushes the puck to Matthews along the same boards. Knies IMMEDIATELY charges to the front of the net. The puck is swung around the opposite boards to Marner who shoots a knuckle puck. Knies is fighting with a defender and screening Bob and it goes by Bob. Had Knies came to a stop on the right side of him (like Marner on play 1).. then its a simple save for Bob.

Berube made a comment after game 1 that line 1 is too one and done and I agree.

...just pointing out that mentioning only Marner on the two gwgs and not even mentioning Knies at all is an absolute crime.
