Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

A lot of people assumed Mitch after the 2023 playoffs because of how poor his playoffs were and his NTC window was about to kick in, but you're correct that it was apparently Nylander who would've been (stupidly) shopped around.
I believe insiders indicated that Marner was the one Dubas was planning to shop.

Also, remember that Nylander said after signing the deal that Dubas promised him he wouldn't trade him throughout his contract. If that were true, then I highly doubt Dubas was planning to trade Nylander. As dumb of a promise that is to make a player, Dubas prioritizing being a players GM more than anything....so I think he would've stuck to his word, even if he isn't didn't want to.

imo if leafs offer marner anything less than the drai constract it's an insult
Weakest team in the playoffs and Marner managed 1 goal and 5 5v5 shots in 6 games. Hes going to fall worse than Huberdeau if he goes to a team without an elite player to cling to.

Did I highlight the hit at the 9 min mark? No that was a Marner only fans.

I don't care about credited hits, they aren't even accurately tracked. I care about compete and play in dirty areas/traffic.

Berube even separated the two leading up to the season. I forgot what the two musts were... one was definitely "compete", I think the other was working hard? But the compete is definitely what Marner lacks.

Nylander can hold off an opponent with one arm better than probably anyone in the league. He also can take a bump and keep his feet moving. He does it often. He is 200 lbs, very solid on his feet and physically strong, we know he trains each offseason. He is also an excellent skater and can outskate physicality.

Matthews, is excellent physically and in dirty areas.

Tavares, is one of the best players in dirty areas.

Marner... 180lbs soaking wet, easily knocked off the puck and he rarely goes into a dirty areas. He is one of the leagues slowest players and therefore cannot outskate physical play. Coach and GM had to tell him to "put in the work" last offseason. Marner plays shinny hockey.

Who led the team in points this year?

Well, if he wants to do what the Capitals did, he’d go for a bunch of misfit toys that they can fit under the cap, the the most expensive UFA out there?
He knows that Marner is capable of helping the Pens make the playoffs...a bunch of misfits, i'm not so sure.

Guess the sports writer who said this:

When the Leafs lost to Florida two years ago in the playoffs, an interesting question was posed to me: If you have one game to win, who would you want on your team, Bennett or Mitch Marner? My answer, then and now, was Bennett who, like Marner, is a pending free agent. Bennett is currently paid $5 million a year, or less than half of Marner’s $10.9 million. Bennett is expected to re-sign in Florida. Still not sure in what direction Marner is heading.

Easy to guess. Only Steve Simmons would be so foolish.

So you would agree Domi is a better playmaker than Marner then? Your logic is if someone has more points, then they are the better player?

Remember how for years people were pumping Marner as the leagues best playmaker. Enter journeyman 3rd liner, Max Domi. Over the past two seasons, Domi has more first assists/60 than Marner. Now you have to admit, thats kinda funny? Are the Leafs just loaded with goal scorers who are boosting assists? How is it possible that Domi has more first assists over 2 FULL SEASONS than pass first Marner?

Elbows UP Mitch

Get in the game your team needs you.

Take a look at what Rantanen did with 5 goals and 6 assists in 3 games alone ( #5-7) to propel his team to victory in round #1.

He just signed for 8 years @ $12 mil AAV and is instantly returning high end return on investment.

Lets hope if you want that kind of money you can match that performance in round #2.

Maybe the dumbest thing I've read on here. There are a lot of players who play with elite players who get nowhere near 100 points. He's obviously going to be over a ppg player even without Matthews.

Who are your elite players you speak of?

6.5 million dollar Hagel was a 90 point player this year with Kucherov.

5.5 million dollar Hyman had 83 points in 77 games, and followed it up with 54 goals and 77 points with McDavid.

Both of those examples are players who played with someone who had way more points and was a lot better because that's the way it usually works when one player is being lifted up by a better player.
