Agreed, I think it has little do with money. It’s about what it’s always been about, he wants to be respected like Matthews. You have a guy whose ego is broken, that’s it. Marner has his faults in the situation because of how the last negotiations went, but like you I think he’s going to take 12/12.5 and sign in a more comfortable situation, probably Pittsburgh or San Jose. I believe he wore 87 as a little kid based on those videos where his dad was screaming at him lol.

I don’t think it matters what happens here, that’s just the sense i get. If im him I don’t really understand the incentive to stay tbh, besides the fact that it’s my hometown. He can make a ton of money anywhere, wont be the scape goat somewhere new and gets a chance to be the man somewhere else, fresh start and more peaceful situation.
Since Dubas tried to get rid of Marner (allegedly), I’m not sure that he’d go for him

Why are we assuming that his wife wants to stay? What if she’s saying let’s get out of here? If these things were true Marner would have signed on the dotted line ages ago. If his wife was seriously applying pressure to stay I think a deal would have been done by now.

I think everyone assumes they are 100% down to stay, both could be ready for a change come July 1st. The longer this goes, the more open to change he probably is IMO. But I don’t know for sure, I could be way off base.
Agreed. As the wife (cosplaying time!) I’d be more comfortable knowing where I’ll be living in the future if I’m pregnant or just had a baby

It's pretty simple.

He MAY pass the puck to someone who will score a goal in a big game. He simply does not have the physical attributes to play with these heavier teams and Matthews will take the blame being called a trash C while covering up for all the areas of Marners game he is cheating on.

The Marner for Rantanen trade that should have happened but didn't because he refused would have been a game changer for us.

Rantanen just pulled off a hockey version of Kawhi Leonard for Dallas. Their whole front office is wearing shit eating grins.
9 long years of waiting for Marner Magic to appear. Marner has 12 goals in 10 playoff series. Only magic trick Marner does is a disappearing trick.

Happy Birthday Mitch! Congrats on the baby - at least now you'll have first hand knowledge of what Thachuk and Bennet are saying when they call you soft as baby pooh.

And hey, no dipsy doodles and drop passes daddio.

Congrats and HBD Mitch! I hope it didnt take you long to start sleeping with earplugs, godsend with infants.

IMO, and I mean no disrespect to anyone, but I truly believe you only become an 'adult' when you need to care for someone before yourself. It is life-changing, and redefines what is considered 'hard'.

He would never have made the gods comment, if he felt unhappy. Toronto isn’t for everybody we need guys that are “shine the light on me” types
I agree with this. Everyone is built differently. Guys like Nylander have fun with it and actually relish it. Others like Tavares are just super stoic and workmanlike about it, so it doesn't phase them. People like Rielly I find to be the funny ones. Like the dude has been around since Brian Burke and through the worst of it - it's all he has ever known, so I don't think he even knows what normal looks like.

If this weren't hockey, but something else, a good percentage of people would have an aversion to the environment or at least be sensitive to it. I'd put Marner in that camp. And yes, of course money is a factor - it's just a matter of how much. If it's 5% more than his next best alternative, after weighing all pros and cons of staying in Toronto, he'd obviously be more likely to bounce than if it were 15%. Same thing, he'll go for 2nd choice at $12M AAV vs. Toronto for $12.5M. Make it $14M, and he'll be much more likely to stay (unless his sense of psychological safety in Toronto is already gone).

I think Dubas will go hard after Marner to revitalize Crosby and the Pens...he's talked about the Capital's resurgence with an older Ovechkin, so it doesn't look like he's interested in a complete teardown right now while Crosby can still play...Dubas is stuck between a rock and a hard place...a teardown would mean another year of no playoffs, and there's no telling how long that playoff futility might lasts (he's going into the 4th year of his 8 year contract and has already missed the playoffs 3 years in a row)...owners can't be pleased...if he doesn't tear it all down, there's no guarantee the Pens will make the playoffs either, but his best shot at making the playoffs next year is to sign Marner. It's sad that Crosby has more influence on how he's building the team, lol...

It wasn’t him he was going to get rid of I don’t know where you guys got that info it was nylander in the cross hairs not marner
A lot of people assumed Mitch after the 2023 playoffs because of how poor his playoffs were and his NTC window was about to kick in, but you're correct that it was apparently Nylander who would've been (stupidly) shopped around.

Nothing necessarily stupid about shopping any player, it's the return.

Would you consider it stupid to trade him for Draisaitl or Rantanen or Makar?

Since he didn't make a trade and we don't know who was discussed, it's hard to judge.

It's more the notion that Marner or Matthews wouldn't be shopped at all or would be untouchable while Nylander is the only one that would've gotten shopped around. By 2023, every single one of these guys should've been available for the right return.

Quite right, and for the same return Nylander would not be my first choice to trade.

Well, if he wants to do what the Capitals did, he’d go for a bunch of misfit toys that they can fit under the cap, the the most expensive UFA out there?

I thought it was Nylander too, they tried to trade and didn’t get any offers they liked. The only time I know Dubas was open to trading Marner was in 2023 after Florida and it was potentially for Erik Karlsson (allegedly), then he got fired

Ah that’s too bad, he would’ve looked good in a Sharks jersey
