The problem with a lot of these types of young players is that they are control freaks and they don't play for the team they play for themselves. Yea marner through some hits but he's also in a contract yr and could be padding his stats.

I thought he was fine last night (as was Matthews). Not a real Mitch Marner magic show, but he hasn't turned into our worst player which has been his previous trick. He was engaged and physical, and made some nice plays. The neutral zone backhand pass to give Carlo a half-breakaway was a vintage Marner play. Great on the PK too. He didn't dominate possession or dissect the defense the way he does when he's really feeling it, but he was clearly dug in. Positive signs, very positive signs, but far from the redemption tour he'd be having if he played like Game 1 Marner.

13mil player, 9 year vet, we're talking about positive signs, PK and throwing his body.

Does anyone speak about Kuch, Ovi, Crosby, Malkin, Pasta, McDavid, Drai, Mack like that? No you expect game breaking offence from those guys and they consistently deliver.

Rattanen once again playoff superstar par none.

I'll give Marner credit, normally his playoff performances make me want to throw up.

He has the potential to go a stretch of 2 or 3 games where he's the best player on the ice, bar none.

I know the regular season is different, but he has all the tools to do it in the playoffs.

It's going to take a real out of the box performance like that to get past the Panthers.

Feels like he's treated like a kid by some? Like, he's not a rookie or still on his ELC or anything, so why are people acting like it? The positives on him seem to be that he's starting to do some hits, and that he's great on the PK - but is that really what the Leafs are paying him for?

In contrast, look how Stützle progressed in this series alone - he just got better and better, and it was his first playoffs and hes young. You kinda expect that.

I think you mean Rantanen, and if so, they are literally tied in points through six games each.
Thank you for the box score update.

If only he was also generating offense, over a point a game, and near the top of both the team and league in points... wait.
Thank you for the box score update.

Now I'll tell you what I saw with my eyes. See if you disagree. Marner's wet noddle shot cannot beat a playoff goalie.

My man, I said that his previous trick is turning into our worst player in elimination games. How much more do you want me to slag the guy? He played well enough last night, considering the stakes and circumstances. He needs a redemption tour if he wants to play in Toronto next year (IMO, ignoring cowardice from management) and that wasn't it, but I'm satisfied with his game last night.

Would love to see it, and frankly, I need to see it to be even remotely comfortable with an extension.

5 hits, won a ton of pucks, competitive everywhere, fantastic on PK, PP came through, couple shots, many more attempts, what’s not to like about his game last night.
I thought he played well too. And other than our overall spirited, not-nervous attitude last night, the PK was my favorite part of the game (Marner and the team as a whole). The PK was the biggest concern going in to the playoffs but they were fantastic last night. Aggressive, poised, and most importantly, successful. Marner wasn't dominant or anything but IMO he played well overall, we won, and that's all that matters.

Beating Ottawa was harder than I would have liked but whatever. We did it, now the next round is where the real work begins. Florida is so much better than Ottawa, I hope Marner and the rest of the team is up to the task. GLG!!

Good summary. Not magic Mitch, but not zero impact Mitch either like he was 2 years ago against Florida. I'll take it, and am fervently hoping he can impress in round 2.

This! I've said it many times - I wouldn't even consider extending Marner unless he shows he can change the narrative and perform in the biggest games against quality teams. I have no complaints about his play so far but let's be real, only an idiot could think he's proven anything yet.

He needs a big round 2 against Florida and even then, the dollars need to be fair, not some Pejorative Slured bending over for 13+M demands.

Absolutely nothing, hasn't been anything to complain about all year, but lots of people around here would rather see him and us fail than us win. We got a real good collection of fans here.

He’s playing himself into a new contract with the Leafs despite Amadio shutting them down all series. If he’s competitive in round 2 they’ll like offer him a new contract.

Marner - and the rest of them - will need to be better against Florida if they want to win.. but some of the negative takes in this thread are just wild. M&M tend to play fairly hard minutes in all situations and their value goes beyond just the box score. (unlike a certain other player who I am sure is the naysayers fav)

That's not a 35 million dollar line.

They're supposed to BE the hard minutes all the time.

Next season Knies, Matthews and Marner could be summed together at 35 MILLION DOLLARS

I think we just established that they do play the tougher matchups and PK too.. so.. what is your point?

We all know the Leafs have bad management and inflated contracts. That ship has sailed.

They should you know, dominate the tougher matchups, because that's what they're idk? PAID to do?????

Are we playing Ottawa or prime Red Wings. Yes we won the series, that's great, but this is not year 2 or 3 of the Leafs core it's year 9. We need higher standards.

I mean probably true since the Leafs have signed exactly one under market contract in the last 9 years.

Overall Marner played well in the series.

His line took over. He was physical. Made 2 great passes that could have been goals, no glaring errors.

Didn’t seem afraid of the moment. Good for him. Hopefully the 4 nations was a turning point.
