Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

This is the issue, if I didn’t know who people were talking about when describing his game, I would think it was a 3rd liner who is good on the PK
That really is what he looks like out there.

This series, Domi:

- had a OT gwg and
- set up the game 6 gwg from behind the net...

but Marner fans think he belongs in the stands and Marner deserves 13 million.

First highlight from the game on NHL.com is Domi standing in the crease wacking at the puck, and the goal squirting through the Sens goalie and narrowly going past the goal line.

Guess how many highlights of Marner in the crease - 0

How many game series clinching OT primary assists does Marner have in his career? - 0

How many OT playoff goals does Marner have - 0

He had some solid defensive plays in tonight’s game

Does anyone want this guy back at $13+ million a season?

Anything under $14M for Marner will be a great deal.

Novice fans and casual observers won’t recognize the value in this contract - - just as they weren’t able to recognize the value in signing Nylander to an $11.5M deal.

Now, in hindsight, the Nylander contract looks like a fantastic value. As will the Marner contract.

I find marner at 2 mil more than nylander to not be a contract with any value just not seeing it

Depends how you look at it ,

I was told JT gave us a huge discount when he signed for 11m and he was worth 13m or more . Mitch is more productive and is much better defensively so considering JT signed 7 yrs ago Mitch would be a massive steal at 13m !!!

Can you believe Mitch Marner has ZERO (0) shots on goal in triple overtime? In his entire career!

I realize triple overtime points are difficult to pile up, but how simple would it be to just flip a puck at the goalie from centre ice to register a shot on goal in triple overtime?

That so <insert disparaging adjective here> of Marner!

...explain how its comparable.

Are you saying that Domis achievements this series were incredibly rare?

I love Marner, but it's no secret that as the games get tighter later in the playoffs his impact generally drops off.

The biggest issue I've noticed is he basically stops skating and tries to manage the intensity by slowing things down which is often the opposite of what needs to happen.

When Mitch is going he's skating all over the ice, asking for the puck, and impacting the game in various ways. Get the legs going and the rest should follow. Hopefully, he's able to figure this out soon and not just have on impact on open/free flowing games.

He was pretty invisible tonight 5on5, the only thing that really stood out to me was that he did good on the PK. I would love for him to take more initiative and shoot the puck more, because constantly trying to feed it to Matthews aint gonna work vs Florida.

5 hits, won a ton of pucks, competitive everywhere, fantastic on PK, PP came through, couple shots, many more attempts, what’s not to like about his game last night.

Sounds like your describing a checking line forward.

0 even strength points in games 5 and 6. -4 in game 5.

Didnt record more than 1 5v5 shots in a game. One game he had 0 even strength shots. 5 total 5v5 shots in 6 games.

1 goal in the entire series

He has 7 goals in his past 43 playoff games. That's a 13 goal pace.

12-13 million?

A couple of great set ups, too (Knies and Carlos). We didn't see much of the silly stuff that at times, plagued his career in the playoffs (forced plays, brain cramps, trying to do too much). If people want to say that this isn't worth 13 kahunas, I have no problem with that, but, he's been doing the things that you want and need of his type of player to win games and series. At this point, that's all that matters.

Not really. It sounds like a 1 game performance. He got a point as well. 8 points in the series.

No.

His level of compete is terrible 5v5, points are easy when the plays are all designed for you to be involved as PP QB. Matthews is getting jammed up while Mitch is trying to play it safe up high. The fact that they don't even mix it up to get more out of Matthews is insane and will likely lead to L1 being crushed by FL and a quick exit. I don't know if he is contractually on Matthews line but ultimately it's a flop.

It's like I have been saying for ages, the guys worth about 10m like Nylander. The difference being in the real world that includes playoffs, a GM may find it easier to overpay for the clutch performances of Willy.

Marner at 13m is a tough sell for Leafs fans for a reason. He ain't worth it.

Matthews is doing double duty to make up for Mitch 5v5. He has been really good in my eyes but a lot are knocking him. It's weird

Again, an example of where points don't tell the full story. He has not looked good as the series grew tighter. He needs to put the puck in the back of the net. 1 goal in 6 games playoff games is not going to cut it, even has a playmaker. 1 goal in 7 the year before that. 3 in 11 before that. 2 in 7 before. 0 in 7 and 0 in 5.

If Nylander can do it, why can't Mitch?

Matthews shouldn't be off the hook either but he's still clearly better in the playoffs (still not good enough though).

Marner is excellent on the PK and power play, 3 on 3 overtime he’s on of the best

But in the playoffs he doesn’t seem to have that next level of intensity. The second round is going to be even tougher

I think some team will offer him $14+ million a year. So we will probably be moving on anyway.

It's something I really want to see him adapt to - he has a habit of holding onto the puck and trying to control the pace, when the best version of Marner is playing at a million miles a minute and just making things happen.

You also know from 2023, that there's basically no controlling play against Florida. They smother you. He needs to play much, much quicker with his hands and his feet, because his mind/vision work faster than the majority of the players in this league.

We don't need the top 2 highest paid players espeicslly since they don't play like it. And as far as getting value. Signing these crappy short term deals ensures we always get screwed and no value. Nylander took a team friendly deal.

In the series ending game against Ottawa he throws 5 hits, second only to Patches. If he can keep this up against Florida it would help immensely. We know how good Marners stick is, when a guy like him is thrownig hits or blocking shots the brain is alert, heightened and active, ready for the big play wth the stick or legs when needed. Hitting is not just for its effect on the opponent but the psychological effect on oneself.
