If he is going to miss a game, it is better he misses game #7. Maybe Matty will wake up and play like we know he can without his little buddy. Hell he may not have to do all the grunt work while his right winger hovers around the blueline waiting for a pass.

Yupp it’s Marner’s fault Matthews has been playing like shit!! Lmfao

I wanted Marner in 2015, grew to really dislike his playing style and have ridiculed him for years on here. Despite saying that, and not wanting us to sign him to a deal where he makes 13+ per year..... He's looking a lot better than AM34. At least Marner competes. Sure, he gets outmuscled most of the time and his shot, especially on the PP is a trap teams setup on us.... but he isn't a ghost out there like Matthews

They could try something really interesting and unheard of and split the two apart. I think a couple of us may have mentioned the additional coverage Matthews gets in the POs when Marner is on his line, but what do we know.

Honest question for everyone.

Do you like that posters cut out sections of our posts and respond to only sections they want to? Like Dekes has done to my post above?

This is no longer my post because Dekes has cut it up and selectively removed parts....

Its no longer my post.

What is stopping everyone from doing this and destroying the website because nobody will bother id others can just hack up their posts how they please before answering.
I will very occasionally delete part of a post, but only because it contains unrelated sections, usually because the poster is responding to multiple other posters, but I am very careful to not change context. I think many posters occasionally do the same.

There are one or two posters who like to delete relevant sections. The selectiveness seems to suggest that they are avoiding questions they cannot respond to, or trying to distort the original post.

I personally find it both childish and rude, and that is a part of why I rarely try to engage them.

I’d split them up, I like the idea of a Marner - Tavares - Nylander line tbh.

I think that line would dummy opponents. Give Matthews Knies and Domi

If you’re the Detroit Red Wings, borderline non playoff team and you had the choice between Matthews or Marner to add as a free agent, Marner is actually the safer asset to invest in because he’ll probably be healthy over 82 games and be a better bet to get you to the playoffs. No guarantee of anything once you get there.

Matthews is just becoming more of a black box in terms of health, performance, big game ability, leadership. You see glimpses of good and elite. You go through stretches of play. Some low floor, low involvement, “saving it” games and you just don’t trust he’s going to be a soldier or a leader for you.

I said it yesterday in a discussion. I think there are many GM’s who look at Marner and say, if I can get him out of Toronto and on my team he would be a highly effective player. This market clearly isn’t the right one for him. I also believe a lot of players around the NHL feel the same way. He’s going to be highly sought after this summer if he makes it to UFA. He’s got the talent but I don’t think it’s going to work out here in Toronto. The pressure is too much for him here. Maybe tonight he proves otherwise!

I don’t think he’s some distressed asset and diamond in the rough. He’s just a flawed, high end player who isn’t properly slotted by Matthews being subpar 1C in the playoffs.

Maybe he learned not to whine to the refs when he gets pushed down in a playoff game…..especially after one of his teammates chopped the legs out of an Ottawa player…..but I doubt it.

Here we are….another opportunity for him to show he deserves a contract from the Leafs……..the fact we’re hoping he finally performs kinda tells the story…..

The point of playmakers is to elevate those around them, no?

Matthews has been bad. But I don't think he's been helped out much by his linematem

Both have been outplayed by Knies and he's not supposed to be driving the line

I mean Matthews lone goal was basically an empty net set up by Marner.

Matthews also has 4 or 5 posts this series? So blaming it on Marner is just kinda crazy to me. Matthews has gotten looks and he’s not capitalized.

My issue is Matthews is supposed to be dominant, I have yet to see him really create a quality scoring chance for himself this series. Where’s the Matthews that could carry the puck through the neutral zone and rip a puck home? Marner can also shoot more for sure, but Matthews has not been good in this series at all.

They've both been very disappointing in my eyes so far

They each have mitigating circumstances to a degree this year.Marner a pregnant wife, Matthews health,.which is worth acknowledging. But the problem is neither has the historical track record in the playoffs to fall back on. This was supposed to be their year to show the haters wrong.

They can still go on a deep run, and I will be cheering for them to do so. But it's looking more and more like we're just going to have to accept that while these guys are stars they're easily in that second tier pool of guys well below the elite of the league.

Or maybe they are elite but together not effective. I feel like the mix isn’t right in Toronto. Something about these guys together doesn’t work. They are too similar. I think each on their own they are elite players but as a collective they do not work for whatever reason.

Like you said I hope they prove us wrong this playoffs

What happens if Marner plays, but plays poorly and we lose game 7?

Headlines read .."Marner takes loss in stride - says there are more important things in life than hockey".

Most Leaf fans that follow the Leafs closely know the Mitch "Milk Toast" Marner is going to be the softest player on the ice in any physical playoff series (both teams), and his historical playoff record shows he is a shrinking violet in pressure filled games particularly series clinching games where after posting 0-0-0 points -4 +/- in a 4-0 this year, has upped his record to 18 games 0 goals 5 assists 5 points, Brutal !!!

There is no living example where now into year #9 of the playoffs that Marner will show up for games #5-7 in any series, so the "plays poorly" is already baked in to expectations.

If Marner is missing for personal reason, than I really don't see any big loss for the Leafs by his absence as I have stated in the past that after many disappointing early season exists, the Leafs should JUST use Marner in the regular season to make the playoffs and then put him in the pressbox come playoff time and play a bigger, stronger, more physical player.

Elbows up Mitch .. Come on man get into the game.

17-18 season Marner had a goal and an assist in game 6 against Boston.

Probably his best 7 game series. But it’s been nothing burgers since then.

He was great tonight again. Just like rest of the core four.
Don't think so. Solid night, no mistakes. Some good passes. But nothing game breaking or play pushing. It's also getting hard to ignore his lack of ability to beat the goalie.

I don't think Matthews had a great night either. Way too many turnovers from him.

Eight points in six games... Tied for the team lead. Ya, gotta worry about his offense.
