Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

Takes a bit of work is all. I figured 4 years is enough (including this one).

Lets go back with elimination games to 2020 then:

GP: 15
Goals: 1
Points: 10
+/-: Plus 5

Trying to watch a hockey game here lol.
Yeah I get it when you have to look at every game that could end a series. So an 8 goal and 52 point pace in these "games". Is that good for how much he is being paid?

That is fair. Mon's D was better overall but Sanderson is better than anyone Mon had.

Ott forwards are better and really only because KK sucked, Caufield was a rookie and Suzuki hadn't become who he is now.
Sanderson is young and it is his first playoffs. Habs had a HOF shutdown dman in Weber. That is what the Sens' D is missing. Imagine Weber in and Rielly out.

Weird, they posted a stat during the game that they were 1-11 in close out games, 1-12 after Saturday. It said Marner had 0 goals and 5 assists. Not sure what the above stats are.

Anyway, up 3-1 is great. M and M have been pedestrian at best. Hopefully they wrap it up Tuesday

Even with Weber being on his last legs he was a force.

Sigh! I hope they end this on Tue or the ghosts are going to be running in full force.

I am not at all worried as it's extremely difficult to suffocate a team the way the Leafs have been able to with Ott.

But if Stolarz lets in another soft goal, doubts will start to creep in

He is doing games where one team can win the series. That is, games after one team has won 3 games. Like game 4 vs Sens, games 5,6 vs Tampa, games 4,5 vs Florida in 2023, and games 5-7 vs Boston last year.

They are referring to games Leafs can win series like game 4 vs Sens, games 5-7 vs Habs, game 5,6 vs Tampa, and game 7 vs Boston last year.

Yes, because he isn't only getting paid for elimination games.

Sixth in playoff scoring. It gets old seeing his name amongst league leaders and then these little ankle biter posts from haters. Ridiculous and really small.

I don't get it, you see Nylander fans up in arms over his performance despite being on 120 point pace in the playoffs.

This is of course ignoring the context of Holmberg being an anchor.

Then you look at Mitch and Matthews. Who's their linemate? Matthew Knies, who's been an absolute stud on the line. He's going to get paid 8-9million this season.

So we got a 13million Marner, a 13 million Matthews, a 9 million dollar Knies.

Are you sure, the fans are totally delusional for asking for more? Stop judging the game on boxscore.

Is this even close to prime Crosby/Malkin? Ovi/Kuznetsov? Stamkos/Point/Kuch? Drai/McDavid?

If Nylander fans can be honest about his mediocre performance despite 6 points in 4 games, you can be honest about Marner and Matthews' performance too.

Stop judging on box score is hilarity personified here. My gawd the goalposts.

Just my opinion, they have looked ok, which is good enough to beat Ottawa.
In a series I expected 2 games where our stars shine and win, one from a good break or a lesser player and one from a goalie. I don't expect domination every game, from any of them. But, to be fair, I do expect stars to show up when it matters, that's an open question and I'd never suggest Marner or any of them have closed that discussion. I just don't get crapping on him, if Matthews was better than 6 percent shooting, they'd look lights out.

Because lights out is still a metric distance from Kuch/Pasta/McDavid/Ovi/Crosby/Malkin. They don't get the benefit of the doubt like those guys do.

Listen, sorry it got personal, family death yesterday.

I think Marner and Matthews have played good. If this was their performance consistent in the playoffs it would be good enough. I just think there's LARGE room for improvement mostly from Matthews, less Marner.

Oh geez, sorry to hear that. Damn. I deleted that post lol.

I'd argue big sexy has to pot some, that's really the main critique of that line.

This is the 2nd playoffs recently that Matthew's has an injury that derails his shooting. I'm not convinced he's going to age well at all if this keeps up. I wasn't upset at the 4 year deal at all.
This injury I don't get it. He's fine and then not fine then fine and not fine, it's just strange. He's had some great weirder releases this series and he's banging, so what is it?

Seems like a chronic back thing to me. Backs are one of those weird things that feel good some days and awful other days and at the same time being sedentary and 'resting' it can also make it worse, but also playing a physical sport like hockey can aggravate it too. Likely just needs a surgery at this point and a full off-season of rehab.

Agreed. I've always thought that, but there I mean he looks limber to me atm. He was stiff earlier in the season, but not now from what I see. Just seems like he isn't going for corners, he's shooting at the goalie more. Who knows.

Could be a mental thing as well. He likely gets worked on a ton each day to get loosened up and get his mobility back, but it must weigh on him knowing that any bump or hit could aggravate it or cause him to lock up again. There were some moments last game too where his pivots and turns looked pretty rough and choppy.
