Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

He’s earning an extension. He hasn’t had to play too tough of a game, but he’s excelling at the game they’re playing.

I love the whole it's never enough narrative around here. He's been our best player all year, he's been our best player this playoff where we have a 3-0 lead, he's leading offense and killing penalties, but it's all "oh, but I'm just gonna wait and see because he might have a couple of games with no points and I'm ready to pounce on him and tell everyone see, I told you he sucks if that happens" and pretend he hasn't been the best player on the team all year.

I'm a huge Marner fan. Assuming he's on the team next season, I'll be buying his jersey next. It was fantastic to watch that play on the Matthews goal.

He still avoids some contact. But that happens with ultra skilled wingers. Patrick Kane was/is the same way, and Showtime is one of the best playoff performers of this generation. You can't expect someone to make smooth plays every game and also crash and bang like Darcy Tucker.

Marner is going to be a huge reason why this team makes a deep playoff run this season. Some people are already saying TO will get destroyed by Florida. I'm saying TO will be rested and tested for a battle against a tired and beat-up Panthers squad. Smart money is on the Leafs.

Don't jinx it. Why say stuff like this when the team has been cursed for so long?

Hopefully that 5 on 5 primary assist was nice enough for you last night!!!

Another year, another playoffs where Marner leads the team in points.
Yea but he’s not scoring goals
He only had 2 hits in last nights game
One of his points last night was a secondary assist

Even his all world pass was lucky

Am I doing it right

The stupidest thing would be for the leafs to let this guy walk.

Too soon?

Someone has been conspicuously quiet ....

Him and everyone else will need to be much better if they end up playing Florida in Round 2. The first line has just been ok in my opinion.

They will need to double their effort to beat FL. Ottawa being as good as they are against us is honestly concerning. Stolarz has been great and Nylander pretty damn good. Marner and the bunch are ok but if the PPs dry up Vs FL we are in trouble.

Results are all that matter. Commentary is jus that. Results speak for themselves.

He along with the rest of the core are clicking when they need to. Not a lot to complain about.

I'd say the odds of him staying likely keep in reading with each win. Though the X variable remains what he/his agent want more so than the Leafs at this point.

His performance in round #2 will determine if he wants to stay and if the Leafs want him to stay.

If they can knock out the Panthers, he most likely stays IMO. If they get rinsed, he should leave and Leafs Tre should be molding this team the way he did last summer.

This right here

Also the Sens series isn't over yet. But he's doing what he's expected to do against a WC team.

The real test will be round 2 and beyond, if he can perform at a high level there.

Matthews has been the best Leaf bar none.I sometimes wonder if I am watching the same game as some of you. 5 points the best defensive forward barr none. Winning puck battles all over the ice. Absolutely dominant in face offs. I'm not sure what more he could possibly do
I said that before last game

Game 3 was Matthews best, he ends up scoring and getting the assist on the OT winner

Not to be argumentative but he’s still not been better than Marner IMO

Marners been great so far but he hasn’t been the best I wouldn’t even say he’s been the best skater but he’s been great they should take him off the pk though definitely on the 5 on 3 one for sure hopefully that doesn’t happen again either that was a stupid ass penalty that Willy took

How you figure ?
All the defensive compliments you could give Matthews can be passed down the line to Marner as he’s been unreal defensively

The 2-1 goal was almost entirely him. Rielly did a normal dump in and Matthews hit an empty net, he made an incredible and disgusting one touch through his and Sanderson legs off the boards in a second to fool everyone

Again I’m not trying to argue over semantics and if people wanna say Matthews has been better go for it. I just think that Marner has been our skater MVP so far.

I've been burned by Marner (and the whole team really) too many times to use the word "confidence", not yet anyway. The trend has been that Marner's production falls off a cliff after game 86, and the rest of the offence follows him a couple of games after that. He's playing really well right now which is obviously a good sign, but we've seen this movie many times before, game 86 isn't until Saturday and playing Florida is as different from playing Ottawa as night is different from day.

The fanboys are merrily chirping away as they always do from November on until the annual fade happens in the spring, me I'm waiting until Marner and the team takes the next step before heaping praise on them, and beating Ottawa ain't it. Beating Florida, that's the next step and it's a HUGE challenge. I'm not confident, but I'm hopeful, and cautiously optimistic, that's the best I can do at this point. We'll see what happens soon enough.
It’ll get real when the forechecc piccs up then we’ll know what we’re dealing with exactly but full marks Hes been solid thus far

I personally don’t agree but that’s just my opinion though I agree marners been solid Hes made a few defensive mistakes one ended up in the bacc of our net

Oh he wants to stay, the only question is will Leafs pay what he wants.
