Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

I've said it many times - using advanced stats to measure the performance of individual players is a really bad idea and it's hilarious how some people are absolutely obsessed with them. Production matters. It's not everything, but it's a lot and while the assists Marner got were nothing special, that goal he scored was a very important goal and it was a beauty! If people want to whine about his giveaways or missed assignments or bad passes or poor numbers as far as expected this and expected that goes, IMHO it's just sad that they have nothing better to do. I have no desire to pick apart his play, I thought he played well and whatever the perceived negatives are, I'll just say that that beautiful goal he scored more than made up for all of it.

GLG!!
Thought the form Mitch showed up in for game 1 was 10x better than anything he showed vs Boston last year. It's what the team needs to go deep.

As many points as the 5,5 mil superstar Adrian Kempe after the first game! ;)

He gotta keep it up if the Leafs are going somewhere though!

Yeah and Florida the year before as well. My gut tells me that as goes Mitch Marner, so go the Maple Leafs this spring. Now that's an oversimplification to be sure but still, if he can play the way he's played all season and not fade away as the playoffs progress as has so often been the case, this team has a good chance of going deep. I mean we should get by Ottawa either way but after that it's going to get a lot harder and we're going to need everyone contributing to have success.

I don’t even understand why after a win in the fashion we won in this guys even bringing up negativity for what?let’s keep the momentum going like my friend @Gary Nylund we can wait til it’s over or until we lose at least
I agree with him that we could have played better, although I can accept "well enough to win" if we do win.

But the idea of singling out one player for something that both the stats and eye test show isn't even remotely true seems odd.

Not that anyone’s counting but that’s FOUR (4) points in the first TWO (2) games of the playoffs for Marner.

Who knew!
Yeah, but the assist didn't come from the perimeter and neither did the goal post. They shouldn't count unless you are arguing for an "extended" perimeter.

Lol... same style of points from thr Tampa series. Playing the point on the PP.

Wasnt gonna point it out, but since you brought it up. He isnt setting anyone up 5v5 and is not playing in the dirty areas. Knies set him up big though. The broadcast team pointed out this game doesnt match the intensity of other playoff teams. Subban praising Knies hard in last intermission.

Id say Marner has been the least impactful player on his line so far.

But hey were winning and im happy...

Thread is strangely quiet all of a sudden. :)
Since you asked
5V5
1 g (jumping O-zone breakaway)
1 point
2 shots (only 1 shot other than breakaway goal)
4 giveaways (team leader)
1 takeaway
1 hit
Ranks among team lowest in hits,
Yep definitely playing like a 12
Million guy against maybe the weakest team in the playoffs.

Wondering when that Gretzky playmaking we always here about comes into effect? He has around 3 primary assists in past 30+ games.

Yeah and $12,600,000 Nathan MacKinnon! Kempe is like the best contract n the league he is the same as the best player in the league in Connor McDavid.

I don't think he had all that great of a game 2, I'd expect to see a lot better version of him in game 3.
Let’s easy on the negativity the only thing that matters is we’re winning marner is what he is we just need him to be the best version of himself

Neutral visitor, but how confident are you guys that Mitch can produce against a forecheck physical team like Florida in round 2 if it happens?

I do not expect much production 5 on 5 against a healthy Panthers team. He had one good game in 4 vs the Panthers this season and it was against a Panthers team that was missing Ekblad, Tkachuk, Barkov and Kulikov.

This thread isn't about Mitch, it's about being correct and other people being wrong, bad fans, and perhaps bad people 🤪

Just win baby 🤘🤙

Florida is an awful matchup for us and for many teams in general, I wouldn't be very confident. They clog up all open ice, constantly run interference and smother teams physically... Marner is a very East-West player which is exactly what Florida's style neutralizes.

Not very. Maybe powerplay he will pick up some blueline 50' assists as he always does.

Not sure why their forechecking would affect him but I believe the Panthers are one of the teams he has the most success against points wise.

Noticed Marners new thing is to wait up high until Knies or Matthews win a battle behind the net and then try to float into the slot, hoping for a pass. It's kinda the jumping the zone he does and did for his breakaway goal, but in the oppositions zone. He times Matthews/Knies win battle and then floats into slot. However, he's not going behind the net into corners like Matthews and Knies.

Marner has just 3 primary assists in his past 31 games (pace of 8 in 82 games)

Honest question, is Marners 5v5 playmaking slipping, overrated, slumping or meeting expectations?

Personally I think its his unwillingness to battle closer to the net and him as Mcdavid put it "playing high in the zone".
