Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

Bro he was injured against the Canadiens I can’t confirm acl to say acl but he was on one leg
I’m convinced you just started watching the leafs last year. He had a knee on knee with Alex Edler that was weeks prior to the playoffs against Montreal. I went back and did a search there are no reports the indicated he was injured during the playoffs, he was healthy. You can’t even find an article that references he was labouring during the playoffs or that he has any procedures following the series loss against Montreal. In fact, all articles around the incident report that he was cleared by Toronto’s medical staff and it was just a MCL sprain, no ligament damage.

You can’t even get the playoffs right. Zach Hyman taking the PK draws was in 2019 with Mike Babcock against Boston. The guy was on one leg in that series after game 4 and Babcock played him insane minutes in games 5-7, which was part of the reason why Matthews got pissed off and Babcock had to fly to Arizona to smooth things over.

So is that a knocc on him or our best player? Pretty sure your top players carry the inferior teammates not vise versa

Do you have trouble understanding English or comprehending things? I literally said Marner and the line was garbage. You weren’t around here, but I actually was one of the people saying we should trade Marner after the 2021 loss to Montreal. I was on the trade Marner and let Hyman walk train. They needed change after that series I felt. Wnd was shocked they kept Marner after Montreal. I was so pissed after Montreal I didn’t watch a single regular season game in the 2021/22 season. Started watching again Tampa 2022 playoffs and stupidly got my hopes up

Hyman was never really that effective for us in the playoffs but he did blossom into quite a playoff stud over the past few years in Edmonton. But with his age, injuries and mediocre year I don't know if he's going to be that 70 goal man (regular season and playoffs) again.

It's a bad list. It has 40+ goal scorers ranked way below. Like how's Kyle Connor below Mitch? The list is shady. Maybe like 13-15 but not 8th

give me a break, it was covid for 1 (why put hyman at risk of contracting right before the playoffs), 2. the leafs locked up the division already and 3. they had the taxi squad, there was no need to rush Hyman back into the line up. It's standard practice, Florida has a bunch of guys injured right now, almost all will be back for game 1, they probably could have gone in games 80-82 if needed but they weren't needed.
You are completely revising history bro. A lot of the justification of zach leaving was cause everyone thought his knee was pooched.

Why do you guys only excuse the play of former players due to injury?

Hyman sucked in every playoff series here, maybe he just couldn't handle the spotlight and the injury wasn't the reason.

Riding shotgun with our best player.

32GP - 5G - 8A - 13P

Produced like a low end 3rd liner here.
Whos " you guys" ? I dont associate with any groups or cliques

As a regular season ranking, the forwards are in a decent enough order… but every defender is ranked way too low comparatively. Hughes and Werenski should both be above Pastrnak.
No way Pastranak was the best player in the league this year on a true stand alone basis

He had the worst forward help Ive ever seen and put 106 pts.

He is above any D-man in the NHL and is the 4th/5th best player now for 3 years in a row.

He really needs to get traded to a contender so he can show what hes capable of on a team that has offensive support and can contend. I would be asking for a trade if I were him this summer

Connors below marner because hes a worse player than marner same way nylander a 40+G scorer is a worse player than marner.

Maybe Crosby and definately Q. Hughes should be above marner still and so should Matthews as he was pretty close to marner this year in per game basis (96 pts per 82 vs 103).

Matthews had a very productive season, he was only 10-11 pts back from his 2024 season pace despite 10-15 games played through injury. He finally playmaked at a high level. Leafs are much more likely to win something if matthews is a ~45G + 60A guy moving forward than a 60G and 35A guy. Hell be much harder to shut down in the playoffs if his playmaking holds up with his goal scoring remaining in mid 30s per 82 range

Marner at 10th or 11th is fair for his season but Connor, OV, Nylander arent better than him despite being 40+G scorers

In order of priority:

1. Re-sign Mitch Marner at anything under $14M AAV

2. Re-sign Matt Knies at anything under $7M AAV

3. Sign Tanner Jeannot at anything under $2M AAV

4. Sign Nick Perbix at anything under $1.5M AAV

5. Re-sign John Tavares at anything under $5M AAV

6. Dump Calle JarnCrap on someone in exchange for a roll of tape

7. Dump Dave Kampf on someone for a broken hockey stick
Overpay Marner, underpay everyone else. Looks like we found another on the payroll.

I understand the cap has gone up, but I don’t see Marner getting a $1 more than Matthews’ AAV.

People here were using the TSN list to prove that such and such are better than Marner. Now that Marner is ranked high it's now a bad list...
At the end of the day, it’s just a list.
A list doesn’t prove any of these players are great. They’re all great as proven by watching them play.

This list is almost always stupid and doesn't measure the real impact of players to their teams correctly. Maybe sometimes they get it right with a Bergeron etc. outside that it's just a bunch of dopes at TSN dreaming up some crap. When the players vote you get the most accurate list.

That's the issue.

It's just you didn't have a problem with it or the people writing it when Marner was in the range you expected. Now he's high and now they're dopes apparently.

The only list I take seriously from TSN is when Bob compiles the draft prospect rankings based off 10 scouts or whatever he uses.

That list is good. You can almost fire your scouts TBH.

Oddly if we followed the Bobby Mac list and needed a Dman we could have taken Carlo instead of Dermott. Carlo was ranked 22 and looks great while Dermott is whatever.

Even the Leafs are not dumb enough to go to $14m. 26 goals and 76 assists does not equal $14m.
Wouldn’t shock me tbh. They would justify going over Matthews because it would be a long term deal and the cap rising. Only way I see him taking less than Matthews would be on a short term deal. Take a 3 year deal at 13m, then wait for Matthews to sign first, possibly get a matching 8 year deal or very nearly as much. Take full advantage of the rising cap and they won’t have to take a pay cut in their mid 30’s like Tavares. Never a penny left on the table. Make no mistake, these guys are champions at contract strategy.
