Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

I was perplexed when Matthews signed that 4 year deal. Matthews signing that 4 year deal was a big mistake, and I'm not sure who'd advised him to do that...they're probably thinking that Matthews could get $15 to $16 million for another 4 years after this current deal...at this rate, Matthews would be lucky to not have fallen apart injury wise at the end of this current contract. What team is going to sign Matthews for $15 to $16 million when he's 31?
I doubt it's about the money. If we don't win by the time he is 31, we never will. He will go to a contender and will have made his money by 31. He is well paid considering he isn't a top 5 player.

This I agree with as well, I think he’s looking to max out earnings now but I also think he’s ego has been hurt for so long lol and now he’s kinda taking it out on the team by not negotiating
If I am the club I'm not talking to him until after the playoffs no matter what. Considering Shanny might be unemployed by then, what is Tre's driving need to sign this guy now if he might soon be answering to a new boss to explain his wisdom? Or is Tre any safer than Shanny if they fail to produce, and if not, again, why the urgency?

Leave the kid alone. If he doesn't want to talk, and his agent wants to drag things to free agency to drive up the price, let him. If Mitch isn't a Conn Smythe candidate what is the incentive to ink him again? Christ how many failures do they need before they rejig this thing? He's a great player but you can't pay three forwards what they keep trying to pay them? One of the three has to go if they can't turn the corner on their 9th frigging playoff together. FFS the Avs let Ranta go because they didn't want TWO $12M forwards screwing up their cap. And he had won a Cup for them!

This is all predicated on the possibility of another limp playoff which I am not expecting but come on guys. Lets tie some expectations to the rewards.

And many of you are itching to pay mid players big bucks and I can’t understand why.
Here's my question. If Knives if going to get $9m what's JT going to get?

Marner ($13+M?) > Rantanen ($12M) > Nylander($11.5M) > JT($?M)> Knives ($7-9?M).
Something's gotta give.

When Marner signed.... i was told he's better than Kucherov. Same posters that are in this thread right now. Bet they won't admir they said it though... @Dekes For Days?
What are you even talking about? Why are you constantly tagging me to misrepresent old discussions? If you were trying to compare to Kucherov, what I would have told you is the same thing I told everybody who did that - he's not a post-ELC contract and is irrelevant.

It’s going to be interesting to see what they can do this off season. I think Knies gets done first

Knies doesn’t and shouldn’t get anything above 8x8. I could score 50 points playing along side those two stars. Slaf was selected 1OA and just signed 7.6x8 starting next year and isn’t playing with anybody as talented as AM or Marner.

And he also isnt as good as Knies are you okay my friend ?? Dont watch the draft position none of that matters Knies is the better player right now and he could definitely use him as a comparable I’d do 8✖️8 all day

Knies will be looking at Johnston contract as a comparable.

Knies will most likely be sign before MM and JT.
MM is testing free agency unless Leafs massively overpaid.
JT is plan B if MM leaves.

This situation is the exact reason why all sports teams operating under a cap structure should not overpay. Overpay is equivalent to having a handicap.

If Knies is worth 8x8y and we have only 6x8y in the budget or lose MM or JT and the overpays amount to 2m. The problem would never have existed without the overpay.

Cap league golden rule. Never ever overpay. Never ever NMC. (Unless you have a top 10 player in the league)

Beginning Sunday, Marner has 2 weeks to prove his worth. If he gets to play another two weeks after that they’ll re-sign him to what ever he wants.

Changes nothing, they’ve said many times the plan is to re-sign him.

I don’t really care for individuals to prove anything. As a team these guys need to figure it out, that includes the depth players. I don’t care who on the roster scores as long as they are scoring enough goals to win. At this point in the season individual success is secondary, we need scoring by committee. Bobby McMann could be our playoff scoring leader and I’d be happy if it led to 3 round wins

Knies is not close to Johnston but I can see him comparing himself to more expensive, better players and the Leafs giving it to him. It is the Leafy thing to do.

B)26 goals 99 points
C)38 goals 74 points
How much more per year is player B worth than player C?
Certainly not more than 3 million. If it is, does it not stand to reason player A is worth 3 million or more per season than player B?

Everything being equal, sure but when you suck up 13+% of the cap and play the most minutes and get all the PP time, you are expected to perform. It is why Marner gets the heat and plugs making the minimum do not.

Be happy if they can get you a key goal for one or two of our depth players.

If Bobby McMann is our playoff scoring leader, it will be a quick exit.

Yep, Team sports isn't for everyone.

JT probably signs yesterday if the Leafs offered $6.5-7m. Mitch wants almost double the money with little playoff success and wonders why the portion of the fan base that can't stand him is growing.

It is too bad the Leafs treat these guys with kids gloves and run the team like a business where making money trumps winning SCs. If they were run like the VGK or Avs, Marner would not be a Leaf today.
