Yeah, pretty much. I mean if it was me, I'd be trying to win in the playoffs, but that's clearly not a priority for those in charge. I was 4 years old when they won the cup, the high points of my memories don't include so much as a finals appearance. Sigh.

I was 7 yrs old and do remember that the broadcast started at the beginning of the 2nd period. Probably past my bedtime cause I remember very little of the championship game.

Could it be Marner struggles in the playoffs, being stacked in games 1-4 and falling off in games 5-7? Nah, it was "Careful selection."

Even if it was careful selection it's not a good look. Last 5 years seems like a totally valid timeline. Even at last 3 years, the Tampa series Mitch put up 9 points in the first 4 games. Then terrible Florida and Boston series.

It's at best 2 good series out of 4, which isn't a 13 million player lol.

5 years the prime ages for Leafs players.

21-27 isn't prime age? 25-27 isn't prime age? Weird how the only timeframe that is prime age is the one that excludes one of Marner's highest producing series while including the one playoff series where Nylander got more points than Marner. Why is prime age necessary to isolate in the first place? If we're already going that far back, why not just go all the way back and get the biggest sample we can? Why does only the top 20 matter? Seems like in a Marner thread, it would make more sense to extend to the top 25 that would include him.

If this was a contract discussion, it would probably be more beneficial to look at the primary drivers of compensation, instead of isolating playoff production over a specific timeframe without context.

I am however quite surprised that there's less than 20 players with a PPG in the playoffs in the last 5 years.

That's because people around here like to point to players that would place in the top-10 all-time playoff P/GP (while ignoring why so many from the same team from the same time are so high up together), in order to skew perception of the production of our players and pretend it's horrible when it's not.

In the cap era, 445 forwards have played 35+ playoff games. A grand total of 8 have maintained PPG or higher. It's rarer than people think. Marner and Matthews rank 21st and 22nd, and move into the top-20 with EN points removed. I get the frustration with the team's losses, but ~0.9 P/GP against 0.922 goaltending while putting up top tier defensive play in the toughest matchups in a gauntlet of a division is among the best anyone gets, quite frankly.

...and contracts, as you noted above. Unfortunately, isolating contextless playoff P/GP since 2019 has very little "compensation relevance".

There's always going to be a timeframe. Some just paint a more representative picture than others.

Forget the points. When I see Marner throw a check and/or just trying to make contact and not shying away from it, battling for the puck in corners, I see something he can build from.

You're not getting 5 points in a playoff game unless your name is Wayne Gretzky in the 80s but the extra contact that impedes the opponent, that puck you dug out that kept the cycle alive that lead to a goal you didn't get an official assist on. THAT wins games when it matters.

he's been last years nylander for us this season

with the actual nylander taking his role from last season, and matthews being injured he may actually be even better in terms of leading the team with less offensive help

Hopefully he keeps this up, and the others can start scoring like him

He's been carrying the team for much of the season so far and he absolutely deserves credit for it. That being said, I don't think there's any need to rush to re-sign him to a deal with an excessive AAV until we see him perform in the playoffs. If he can maintain that level of play or close to it, pay him what he's worth based on what the current market dictates. If he is a no show in the playoffs, management needs to think twice about the best use of 13 million dollars.

How does he get an assist on Knies' first goal when it was MacAvoy who shot the puck around the boards which Matthews intercepted, threw at the net and tipped by Knies for the goal. I'm guessing they have video that shows the MacAvoy clearing pass ticked Marner's stick?

Yes, he is going to get paid. I just hope it does not kill this team while Matthews is here because I hold the core 4 responsible for only winning one round in nine attempts.

Willie was on a 120 point point pace after 40 games last year. He ended up with 98, and is currently on an 88.5 point pace for $11.5m.

Marner does not take nights off like Willie so he probably won't fade the last month of the season and get his 100+ points.

They are going to handcuff themselves to the 3 amigos for at least the next 3 years. If they shit the bed in April, they will hear it again from the pissed off fans and they won't be able to bullshit us with, "everything is on the table".
