Correct, in some rare cases the contract is not insured and that creates some complications like makes the contract untradeable or prevents teams from signing a guy. Most noticeably, Michael Ferland’s contract was not insured. Pretty sure Nathan Hortons contract wasn’t either and that’s why Toronto traded for it and gave CBJ the clarkson contract bc Toronto could afford to pay Hortons contract when he inevitably failed his physical.

I think you misunderstood.

You're talking about the team insurance that pays a player if he gets injured so the team doesn't have to. But there's also private individual insurance the players purchase on their own. They make an estimate on potential career earnings and insure that whole amount so that in the event of debilitating injury the player still gets the difference between projected career earnings and actual earnings by way of an annuity.

For example Marc Savard's career ended early, but he probably got a huge insurance settlement that paid him close to what he would have earned if he stayed healthy and played another 400+ games, even if his final contract expired after only another 100 games or whatever.

You're joking right?

It's thread after thread of Marner needs to be with Matthews in here. Nothing but support of Keefe and now Berube with AM MM.

Split AM MM up has been a long running heated debate around here. Need a bigger broom to sweep that under the rug.

Changes nothing BTW. Should not be signed before a succesful playoff run.
I suppose you lumped all the Marner fans together when that isn't the case.

I know they will excuse it as 13 not being that bad as the cap rises over the next 8 years.. but c'mon Mitch.. you got a window here right now and you don't need the money. Oh well.
Leafs again bidding against themselves and being taken to the woodshed by Ferris. It is f***ing sad that this fanbase has been stuck with some of the greediest and/or dumbest owners/management since Conn Smythe.

Better not shit your pants in the playoffs if you sign for $13m or you will be begging to be traded.

I thought it would come in around 13, which to me is decent value. Touch less than Matthews and signed up for the full 8 years, over the sweetheart 4 Matthews extracted. It’s all about cap percentages, and if what we hear the about the cap rising to potentially 105 mil by 26-27, his deal will look in line with other elite wingers, also not much different from what Nylander got, touch higher.

The haters will shit on any deal, it’s irrelevant. If the cap rise is set to really take off, this number is exactly what a Marner gets on a full 8 year deal. When Matthews(assuming he’s healthy) re-ups in 3 years, he will get 16-17 all day long, perhaps more, he’s really the guy that’s milked this organization for every cent, repeatedly.

13 x 8, all good, and he’d get more in free agency, I don’t care what anyone here tries to argue, a GM will take a run at the opportunity to get a top end 200 foot player like Marner, zero doubt in my mind.

Get here done, and earn your freight come playoffs Mitch.

Yeah I would be the first to question what Steve Dangle knows about anything but time will tell

No guarantee they would get him.. silly idea every time someone brings it up
Ranta and Sakic are at a stalemate and unless one budges, it may not be so silly. It would take a GM like the one in Vegas to push to get a deal done with Sakic.

Not sure the alternative of a bidding war for Rantanan is a good option for the Leafs. The cap rise above what is expected means more teams are in the mix, and the idea of landing a guy that puts you over the top, it’s very attractive. He will murder it in free agency and our tax structure isn’t a plus here. It’s like a heightened JT scenario.

Sorry, Mitch and his 25 goals and assist per game is not worth $13m. Give him $13m now and he shits the bed in April and the fans will be more toxic than they were last summer. If the number is $13m, then it needs to be done after he shows he can do it in the playoffs.

If Mitch signs a 12.5 x 8, it will make him the Maple Leafs first player to get a $100 Million dollar package deal. As much as we all might like lower - that seems like it's likely the floor.

I don't like the 13 number at all but the fascination on goals for a playmaker is so weird.

Marner is our best all around player and its not close.

A 110 point, 2 way stud, is getting that.

I’ve always believed we do it before the playoffs, maybe it’s advantageous to wait, but it has its own set of risks.

We aren’t getting out of this “core four” price regime, I’ve just accepted it and hope they figure it out. We have an internal cap structure, I’m done fighting it.

There is no bidding war if you trade and sign Ranta. If he goes UFA, then agreed, there will be a bidding war but which teams can outbid the Leafs?

It’s a way to diminish him. Adam Oates averaged 22 goals during the Hull years and wasn’t near the defensive player, that didn’t win anything, he’s beloved in St. Louis.
