Looks like the training with Crosby and MacKinnon is paying off. He looks more shifty and like he realizes what he needs to do to create space and time.

Someone on a team that wants to win is going to crush him doing what he is doing right now. It's going to be like Grabo. Too cute is becoming too cocky with all his fancy Nancy dance moves on ice. Marchand or whoever is going to line him up.

See it coming a mile away. This little stretch does not represent who he is. It represents how much he wants a huge contract. If not true he would have played like this the whole time.

2 of 3 on the panel last night said don't pay him. Make him show a solid playoffs

You realize the cap goes up for every team, right? If you think Marner can't get more than what the Leafs offer him in the open market, you're flat out delusional.
Really now? What are teams gonna offer on the open market on a 7 year term that will exceed what the Leafs will potentially offer?

There's pretty well nothing to lose by waiting 'til after the playoffs to sign him. Regular season elite play really doesn't interest me personally at this point. He's got plenty of that under his belt.

Apparently we just have to buy the fools gold every single time. If we offer legit criticism of a Dubas or Marner or a Clarkson these guys want to send McGrufff the freaking crime dog after us. It's just weird.

Not at all. Go look at the fancy Nancy dance moves he was doing his last contract year. Its a performance. Yes it is getting points. It will dry up. He is not stronger.

You want to toss 14m at this mirage be my guest. Not buying it here.

He was what? 21 the last time around. Were you a fully matured man at 21? I think people need to let go of the last negotiation.. it’s been 6 years, is anyone the same person they were 6 years ago?

I don’t really see any of what you’re describing. You know what I do see, a guy who is playing harder and really taking this season seriously. I also saw a pissed off Marner at the end of the game because he made a bad turnover in the dying seconds and understood that he can’t do that. He was the last guy to join the celebration, it was pretty refreshing to see him hold himself accountable. He even referenced it in the post game press conference. I don’t really see Marner dancing much these days tbh.

I think he in particular has definitely matured and we are seeing that translate on the ice this season.

If the rumors of him loving being a Leaf so much and not wanting to be anywhere else, what's gonna hurt by waiting 'til after the playoffs?

We already learned with the other contracts that the Leafs pay more than anyone else pretty well by default. Money will never, ever be the issue. No team will ever offer enough on a 7 year deal to even come close to matching what the Leafs will offer.

Signing Marner to Draisaitl money and bombing out again in the 1st round would be the absolute worst case scenario. We can atleast limit one part of that equation by holding off on the contract.

100% and is why Pounder and ODog hammered that home last night. This teams fanbase and seemingly admin want to pay. It's weird.

Yep. Also Leafs go on a run every single November, so blowing your load now over November performance when everything is going swimmingly in the middle of a hot streak just seems asinine.

I would also be in favour in waiting until the playoffs. There is no rush. We have the leverage this time around as you’ve alluded to

Marner will NOT be offering any sort of discount during the season. He didn’t offer a discount last time at all. He will only sign now if we overpay.

There is NO reason to sign him now. Wait till the playoffs. I literally don't care if he gets 200 points this regular season. Just wait till after playoffs.

Only reason to sign someone early is for a discount. He will never provide a discount. If san jose or anaheim or whoever wants to pay him 14-15 mill per year then be my guest!

Yes this exactly the only way to deal with him. We don't have another option. We could float a 3 year 11.5m right now and revisit perhaps but for the moment there is no reason whatsoever to pay 13.8m or whatever insanity is floated..

Except we had our worst defensive results in half a decade in the playoffs last year, and we were great defensively in the playoffs prior to that.
How do you measure 'great defensively'?

GA/GP:
2017 - 3.00
2018 - 4.00
2019 - 3.29
2020 - 2.40
2021 - 2.00
2022 - 3.29
2023 - 3.18
2024 - 2.57

It looks like last year was one of the better ones rather than the worst.

We just gave a guy 13m plus for his playoff failures
We just gave a guy 11m plus for his playoff failures

Now marner gets all the blame for the failure to date.z

I honestly hope he goes to another team and wins a cup there

What a stupid comment donating him until after the playoffs. We didn’t do that to the other two muffins

But hey it’s all on marner to lead us in the playoffs

Safe to say the Team isn't looking at the situation the same way some of his detractors are.

We will see how matured he really is comes playoff time, of course the same goes to Matthews as well. Both of them have to step up big time.

I’m very nervous for Matthews to come back. I don’t want the team and players to revert back to old habits. I honestly feel like if this hasn’t shown everyone that the team kind of follows Matthews demeanour then I’m not sure you’re paying attention.

For long we’ve believed that Marner is the one who is the driver of the team playing the way everyone hates. But it’s getting harder to ignore 34 might be the problem in terms of the team having trouble adjusting to a specific style of play… I know we don’t want to talk about it, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Why are we a more effective team when he’s out? It's kinda crazy.
Bunkis made the point last night that the team takes on Matthews "too cool for school" persona, some nights he doesn't show up, whereas without him Marner and Nylander are taking control and showing up nightly. It was a hot take, but this record everytime he's hurt, it seems more and more interesting than anomaly. We don't wait for Matthews to show up, and I've always felt his biggest flaw is he rarely takes matters into his own hands, he sniffs out the vibe and comes in and out as he pleases, so talented he can get away with it. That however isn't a champion, at least not yet, and his absence once again offers intriguing dynamics.

Most people are fine with 12 million based on the 92.5 cap, that 13%. Let's say the floated 97 mil cap increase gets approved, now you're at 12.6 million same %.

I wouldn’t put Nylander in the category with the other two only ignorance would allow you to do so expectation to results he’s clearly separated himself in that regard he just joined the boys club we’ll see how they all do this year but as far as the past goes 6.9 to 10.9-11.6 he shouldn’t have been in the same ball park as them he was closer to bertuzzi money
