Marner being the skilled defensive forward really suited him against Sweda. My guess that will also be his role against the US rather than relying on him to be the offensive catalyst against those bigger players. I can see him having a great game Saturday knocking down a mistake or two and setting up at least one goal.
If the US bring what they brought last night, more likely Mitchy will be invisible in regulation.

Who are you going to believe his coach (what else is going to say) or posters on the board?

Coaches have said the words like, "he was just OK" or we need more from player X. He could have said yep he was good, instead he chose to use multiple superlatives. It's not uncommon for coaches to give watered down melba toast answers.

They got rid of Semin because he was a locker room cancer, but it took another six years before they won.

It's shocking to me that what the haters believe to be true, eventually turns out to be just a false construct of a colorful imagination.

Let me try it... if you hold an apple in your hand and then take away your hand, the an apple will drop to the ground. Why? Simple, it is because the Apple doubles in weight once you remove your hand .... prove me wrong ... gooooooo!

No doubt. A coach can say what they want. As has been pointed out, sometimes (not always) it is to help a players confidence. However, ice time and role is still an better indicator.

Semin was Marner. Soft as butter. No playoff success with him. Two of a kind

Maybe. He might have a strong game one is as likely as the other. Perhaps his line struggles. It will open chances for the other lines.

yeah hard to imagine two players more similar than these
Not really. Some people have vivid imaginations they created an entire Marvel universe. Still, they are very different.

Semin was Marner.
If Marner is comparable to anybody on Washington, it would be a better version of Backstrom. I think you know that, but it destroys your narrative, because Washington held on to Backstrom.

Semin in his prime would be closer to Nylander, and by the time Washington moved on, he had already deteriorated to more of a Hyman level.

Semins last 3 years with the Caps in the playoffs: 7 goals, 12 points (7th on the team) in 30 games, took way more penalties that drawn, more giveaways than takeways.

Marner the last 3 years in the playoffs: 6 goals, 25 points (leads team) in 25 games while being one of the best defensive wingers in the league. 3 times more penalties drawn than taken, 50% more takeaways than giveaways.

Jeezus, they are like twins. I cant tell the difference.

I hear they have the same fighting acumen. :sarcasm:

Yep, took less than one game for Mcdavid to get fed up with Marners perimeter play. Shocker.

Obviously he was giving shit to Marner. So obvious.

Imagine Marner in the ECF if he makes it. Totally getting hammered and put out of the series. He has 0 conditioning and 0 resilience. His game is avoidance.

You apply any other name to this guy and people would say. Why is he drafting another soft perimeter player. Nu Hockey wins again, just not on the ice. In the realm of the nothing to show for theorists living rooms.

I believe at this point that if - big if obviously - Mitch scored the game-winning goal for the Leafs in the SC final that wins them them the Cup a bunch of you would come here immediately and bitch that he was invisible for the rest of the game. Or point out that he only had 3 hits in the series. Or in his post-game comments that he didn't thank enough people.

Seriously, for some of you the hatred for this guy has reached alarming, almost pathologically worrying levels.

For your the sake of your own mental health can I just offer one small piece of advice: Get a grip. :help:

Yep... it isn't a good sign when your apparent 14 million winger is getting chewed out by the best player in the NHL in less than 1 game together. If Mcdavid was excited about playing with Marner and thought highly of his game and highly respected him, than he wouldn't be chewing him out in less than one game lol.

Its kind of weird that half of the quality chances in the game were from that line and yet people were crapping on it like it wasnt working.
People see what they want to see I guess.

Marner's sneaky little passes to set up prime chances are going to go in sooner or later though. Those shooters are too good to not convert. I remember McDavid gave Marner the "my bad" look on one great chance during the game last night. Just made the wrong move in close.
Unfortunately in the playoffs, opposing teams know Marner’s tendencies and take away his passing lanes and he ends up taking soft wristers from 40 feet away or over handling the puck. This tournament won’t change that fact. He needs to change his tendencies and get closer to the net and score from there when Matthews is covered.Similar to what we’ve seen him do when Matthews was injured.
