Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

Now you're just being obstinate.

Sorry to intervene. You can go back to your squabble with Antropovsky. I just thought I would offer you some insight.

The earth is also round too btw.
No it is isn't. It spherical. Not a perfect sphere though it is an oblate spheroid. We observe things in at least 3 dementions.

If Marner walks July 1st, Tavares stays, do we even want Rantanen at 14m? We’d still be very top heavy:

14m Rantanen
13.25 Matthews
11.5 Nylander
7.5 Tavares

46.25 million new core 4
Good question. I mean I'd 100% rather have Ranta than Marner but the fact that we'd still be top heavy is a legit concern. My first instinct is to say we should look very hard at other options because spreading the cap around a bit is probably a good idea.

I remember when the Nerds starting saying the earth was round.

But you need to prove to me the earth is round.

Am I doing this right?
I think it's that showing a picture of the earth from outer space showing it to be round isn't enough, you're supposed to add context or something. Of course context can always use more context so how to know when enough is enough? Hard to tell, the arguments are getting harder and harder to follow.

I understand the logic of letting Marner/Tavares go and spend the money elsewhere. As many have said, we can get a couple of decent players at that price. People will point to what Bennett makes (or some other player who signed to a good deal) and say we can get a Bennett plus this or that. Problem is with news that the cap will be increasing significantly, will said decent players still be asking the same prices? Does it drive up the prices if Toronto is the ones paying and not a team like Florida? Not to mention, what happens if said players sign elsewhere? Do we just wait and cross our fingers for McDavid to sign?

A couple weeks ago on the Leafs Report pods, Mirtle said he didn't think Marner signs anywhere until July

Now we have this

Looks like he's not signing until the summer.

Hockey is a business, and I won't chirp a guy for treating it as such. But if he hasn't made his mind up to stay or not by June 30th, Tre needs to go all in on the backup plan. No desire to see a bidding war for down on a guy just to get burned

A strategy I would love to do is identify teams that lack scoring ability and target their best offensive players. They're typically underpaid because they haven't put up the big numbers and then they often fluorish with better teams. Colorado did it with Necas, everyone has done it with Buffalo, Philly would be a big target for me, I bet Konecny would be ridiculous with our group.
I agree with you all the way on that. Same with getting Defenders from teams with bad Tending.

If he wants to play games just ask him for a list of teams he will waive for and put him on the block. No need to piss around with his bs and antics.

Losing the 8th year does not make sense. Why delay leaving, waive to a team you want to go to and will pay your ask and term and Tre can make a deal. Suck again in the playoffs and you most likely close the door here. Arrivederci.

I might be wrong but I think as long as he's a Leafs prior to the tdl he can still extend for 8 years in June/July

He is greedy. He doesn't want year 8. He probably want 3 or 4 years because the cap may be 130m in 4 years

Correct. Thought somebody said he was not signing anywhere until July and you said "if he has not made a decision by June 30th". Of course he could and will most likely make up his his mind between now and then.

Yeah I don't think he's interested in signing for 8 years either.
That would actually be better for the Leafs. He may jump the shark and score as many goals as Domi, and Kerfoot in 4 years. Any normal player would take the guaranteed generational money. Not Matty and Mitch.

Why better? Better he put his foot down and we pursue McDavid.

Pursuit of the Marner unicorn is a waste of time now

You and I would but we are talking about suits who are more interested in, catering to kids, who I am told, love him and selling jerseys than making a bold decision to move off a core that has failed 8 straight years in the playoffs.

The Leafs will overpay him and make him more disliked than he already is and sell more jerseys of course.

No way we are paying Tavares 7 mill as he becomes a 3rd line C.
Personally I doubt he’s stepped up his game in a contract year just to give us a discount. He was coasting for the last several years til now. He’s just like the others, motivated by money, very risky to extend him. Time to end this culture of greed, Have to let both Marner and Tavares walk.

8 years of thinking he is like a god here has taught me one thing. He is a false playoff messiah. It's not gonna happen with Mitch

Anything over $6m and I'm looking elsewhere first. Will be interesting to see if Ehlers, Boeser, or Bennett make it to July 1st.

He greedy but is he confident in himself like Matthews? Is he going to actually get a raise in 3/4 years with another 3/4 years of playoff flops? Even his regular season numbers may be in decline at age 30/31.

Exactly why risk it when odds are you are more likely to remain a Kerfoot in the playoffs than morph into a Doug Gilmour.

Yep. Last time he fought tooth and nail and probably was shocked to find that nobody valued him nearly as much as he valued himself....when nobody came with a better offer than the Leafs. But he hung on to the bitter end...desperate for more money than the 10.983 million overpayment he received.

Why would this contract be any different?

I had to laugh watching back Dubas and Marners presser announcing his last contract and Dubas said "I'm sure Marner wanted the contract to be more and we wanted it to be less..."

Both Dubas and Marner are idiots...clearly.

Let him be somebody else's problem.
