While it’s certainly possible, it feels like to me, if that was his outlook he’d have asked for a trade.
With the significantly increasing salary cap, hitting the open market and letting the bids roll in is like striking gold for him. I don't think he'd want the inconvenience of uprooting his life for a few months, then again, if he went elsewhere his playoff performance wouldn't be as under the microscope, or he can latch onto a winning team...this would help his ufa value.

Have it ever occurred to you guys that maybe MM just doesn’t want to resign with the Leafs.

It is a possibility, right.
As others have said, 0% chance of this. It is a virtual guarantee that he is resigning here. The Leafs will pay him to ensure he doesn't leave.

Mirtle said Leafs are willing to make him one of the top 6 or 7th highest paid players in the league. Looks like he wants to be in the top 2 or 3. Now that is the kind of team player I want to build around.

Seriously how does a guy like Benoit making peanuts play as hard/tough as he does every shift when he sees this guy making 10x the money and is afraid of contact and stays as far from the blue paint as possible? Seems it is only a team game for the 3 little pigs on the ice. Off the ice, it's look out for #1.
I've always wondered what the chemistry is actually like off ice, between the haves and have nots. The guys making a mil are the ones getting squeezed for a couple hundred k, while the guys making over 10 million are not leaving a red cent on the table and always getting above market value. You'd think those 10+ guys would leave something for those guys who aren't going to be set for life from hockey. From the outside looking in, I don't see a ton of mutual respect within the differing social classes.

The key point is that if they are smart they don't overpay. If they are really smart the don't give NMC on the whole term.

0% chance you are right. He makes bank on endorsements here. The guy sells his toenail clippings and saves nose hairs for future sale.

Though that may be a joke, he does make bank here and American markets don't give a shit about the skinny guy. He stands to lose a ton of money if he leaves.
His entire family is employed by his Marner Assist Foundation. I'm sure they are paid and treated very well.

Article from 2013. Wonder if things have changed for Athletes and their charities?:

Do homework before giving

"Outside the Lines," which found that 74 percent of 115 athlete charities investigated fell short of acceptable nonprofit standards used by the top three charity watchdogs. Odom's charity, named for his mother, who died of cancer when Lamar was 12, was highlighted as one of the most egregious offenders.

Any agent worth his 4 percent demanded it: limited risk, big tax benefits, possible public-relations boost. What's not to like?

Honestly, as of today, I really don’t think Leafs cannot survive without any of their players. It is not like they are close to the Cup or anything. Reality is that they are only close to the SECOND round where 50% of the playoffs teams made it every year.

But there are posters here who assured me just yesterday that every single GM in the league would happily pay him at least $14M per season.

Horse before the cart; If Marner flakes out in the playoffs and doesn't build on the good work this year, then the conversation should be moot after the fact.

I like the idea of an injection of new blood if Rantanen and Bennett are serious options.

I think the new blood this year has proven that, and ironically, in the improved play of Marner...more of a return to form I'd argue.

Again: Without success in the playoffs, even if its by the eye test alone...There is no reason beyond peculiar nostalgia where anyone argues: No, no, no, now with this top 3 contract in the league, the outcome will be different.

I don't think it's a stretch to say we're "there" as a fanbase.

Happy to be surprised, but I'm focused on July 1st 2025 in a way I can't remember being as forward looking in the past.

Ferris knows this is where he can get the most money. After Sakic decided not to pay Ranta, I'd love to see who is paying this guy and how much. Enjoy Utah kid.
Why can sydney crosby sign in pittsburgh with no fanfare
Yet people are saying marner will get 14 mill
I doubt ud get crosby for marner straight up
Especially trying to convince your fans hes worth more
But its painfully obvious marner wants to come out of this making more than draisatl
The leafs need a bigtime norris caliber defenseman as much or more than over paying a forward
If u gave me makar , minus marner id say the odds are even better in the playoffs

Maybe Shanahan was playing the long game all along. Wait till everyone else sucks and hope it works out one of these years. I’m actually suprised they haven’t re-signed him yet, not sure who doesn’t want to commit
Ted rogers is taking control of the team soon
My guess is the board may have instructed shanahan to wait
Even tho it make take a year
This is happening and msle will be owned by ROGERS
maybe he cleans house even pelley wonr be secure

There is nothing good about anything the Rogers company has done. Everything they touch turns to crap.

I'm sure the nepo baby will fix it though.

There’s multiple articles and insiders who spoke on this. Dubas ended up caving to the exact same deal Nylanders camp put on the table in the summer.
You're mixing up the signings. There were reports that Treliving caved to Nylander's summer number for the UFA signing, but not for the post-ELC. For that one, reports and even Nylander himself suggested that he called up less than an hour before the deadline and took the Leaf's offer.
Don't know why a UFA would drive RFA negotiations.
There's a simple answer. They didnt.
Would the Leafs have been any worse with 4 1st. round picks to use after marner offersheet?
Yes. There were also potential contracts below the four 1st threshold that would have been worse.

Thank god Vasi was a sieve that series to inflate Marners playoff stats.
Yeah, Marner's playoff stats have been really inflated by that Vezina calibre goaltending his team has averaged facing throughout his career. :eyeroll:

Guess we can dismiss everybody's points from series where they faced worse goaltending, right?

Best, most important, and most versatile player on the team quite easily. He could easily play C or D if needed. Best passer, sets up the most goals, best PKer on the team, runs the PP. He's simply the best leaf.
