as far as the comments re: where were the discounts for 34 and 88 --- this falls on 34 ... willie said last year that he would look at a discount if others did as well .. shortly after that auston signed his current deal ...
from friedman:

[Friedman] When it comes to William Nylander’s negotiations, the biggest problem I think is this: he’s not gonna want to take less if he doesn’t think anyone else is going to. If he believes other players will, he will.

Which is the correct mindset. Why should anyone take less when the top players are simply saying give me max, you take the discount, more for me. Looking at you Mitch I am as good as Matthews Marner

Right you guys share the same amount of blame as the core but career earnings are not the close

Wouldn't be shocked at all if Marner wants a 2 year deal. Take him to 29 years old, with the cap at $110M+ as a UFA, and sign his big 8 (or 7) year deal for many more dollars.

I will say, if Mitch wants a 2 year we can absolutely do that, no NMC's of course.

Nah Marner will want it both ways. He’ll want the security of an 8 year deal, and he’ll want the the 110M+ factored into his salary, not to mention the full NMC. Only thing I wonder if he’d be willing to defer some of the money, which his camp would play out as him making concessions to make the team more competitive lmao.

I’m not so convinced that Nylander ever actually said this, and even if he did, he would have known full well that Matthews wasn’t giving any sort of discount, we all knew that much. Personally I think Marner’s rfa deal played a bigger part in Nylander’s demands than Matthews ufa deal.

Relative to other athletes in other major sports. Bench NBA players are making more than Connor McDavid.

Same with utility infielders making more than start NHLers. IKF a blue jays was making 7.5 a year for example.

Chris Boucher on the raptors makes 10.81 USD per year.

That’s what makes the MLSE ownership of the Leafs and Raptors so unique. On one hand they have an NHL team with the financial of an NBA team but are handcuffed and spend to the NHL level.

For the price of a Chris Boucher you are re-upping some of the upper tier stars in the NHL. So you think about the revenue that’s built off these guys, of course they don’t mind shelling out a little more and keeping the band together.m

Like think about in another sport where Rogers is throwing $600 million to be in the Juan Soto conversation, and they’re getting hockey’s near equivalent for less than $100 million over 8.

Seravelli on Bunkis yesterday thinks not likely Marner gets less than Matthews with the rising cap. Says no discount. Who wants to drive him to the airport?

It’s interesting that TSN is starting to put out the Marner or Rantanen option. If it’s not outright back channeling via the media wing, it’s at least putting the idea into the mainstream that the Leafs have UFA options.

I’m not a Marner fan but I find your argument a bit insincere

Why is Marner criticized only for the playoffs but Matthews is hailed for his regular seasons. Nylander got overpaid too, but it was just a normal 8 year UFA overpayment, similar to what Marner will have

Matthews has been a dud in the past 5 playoff series’s too and don’t give me the bs injury excuse as his wrist gets hurt every year on game 83.

They’ve both been mediocre playoff players and great regular season players. Matthews has the grossest contract in the league and Marner will just have an overpaid contract.

I don’t want that, but if it comes to it I won’t just be mad/disappointed in 16, it’ll be all 3 of them who were after every penny.

100%. Seems like people are still holding out hope for this team when it's clear that ownership doesn't prioritize winning.
