The least they can do is wait to see how this group does in the playoffs under Berube before they handcuff themselves to these 3 current payoff failures.

He's worth $13m in the regular season, but he's not worth $13m in the playoffs, not even close. People that don't care about the playoffs should be happy to pay Marner $13m, he's a great player so why not? People that want to win in the playoffs are ready to move on from Marner, hell they've been ready for years.

There seem to be a bunch of people that want Marner signed, and also want playoff success. Now those are the people who just don't get it.

I get fans wanting him signed but seeing no issue with overpaying all 3 playoff losers a second time when they have failed miserably in the playoffs for 6-8 years is mind boggling. The Avalanche just moved off Ranta because they think they can't win with 3 players making all the money but we will overpay a soft winger who is goal challenged and coughs up a fur ball whenever the going gets tough. Amazing brilliance.

I saw Nylander do the same when the Oilers started to get physical in the Leafs end. Wanted nothing to do with the puck. The Leafs will never win a SC with the 3 amigos leading the way and making all the money. But hey, keep on believing. No other franchise sells hope better than this one.

There are 3 players in the NHL with more points than Marner. This isn't a question of whether the Leafs fold in these negotiations. It's simply a matter of how badly they fold. It will be less than Matthews' AAV, but probably not a heck of a lot less.

Also, I laugh how people fluff off unsolicited praise for a player just because they personally don't like him. Nobody cares, I'll take peers and coaches over butt hurt agenda postings. So petty.


If it's 8 years, then it should be close to Matthews, who took us the cleaners again with a 4 year deal.

I am interested in the Ovi record chase. I would like to see him break it. I also wouldn't mind seeing someone break an assist record - even the 100 assists was worth watching and an amzing milestone.

I think at this point, if the cap goes up like they say, it’s more of a matter if they think Marner is a key piece to being a winning team or not. The cap hit probably isn’t as big a hindrance. Which in Leaf speak means sign him to whatever

He didn't say that lol. Mcdavid was asked by reporters a pointed question about Marner being on team Canada and he said nice things and that he's excited to play with him.

What do you think he's gonna say? Naaa not good, don't want him on the team?

If he came out unsolicited and gushed about Marner (like he has Crosby) then I would understand. He didn't, he was specifically asked about his thoughts on Marner being on the team and he responded kindly..like all hockey players do.

Mcdavid was also asked about his relationship with Matthews and Mcdavid said its a growing relationship, they have the same agent now etc.

Should we assume Mcdavid is coming to Toronto and we need to not sign Marner in order keep cap space open for him?

It the team believes that they have a real chance of signing McDavid, they should definitely make sure they have the cap to do so.

Marner's definitely walking to free agency, reading between the lines it seems like his team wants to really maximize the benefits of the cap rising. Any perceived discount has a less than 1% chance of happening at this point.

His main linemate has scored 13 goals over that period of time, .37 goals per game, whereas Matthews scores .73 goals per game in the regular season past 5 years.

Not sure why the focus should be on marner, when his linemate drops off so dramatically in the post season?

Marner is easily worth $13 million to an organization like MLSE playing in a non cap league. From a local market economics perspective it’s all reasonable what he’s asking for relative to what the Leafs generate. If HRR was 50% of what this franchise pulled in, $13 million is a bargain.

However, it’s not good value when you compare it to what “real” NHLers make and what $13 million players look like around the league on teams the Leafs have to compete with night to night.

I say let him walk and through some mysterious man let McDavid know that he is welcome in Toronto in 2026 if he chooses. Something he probably understands would be an obvious option if he wanted to pursue it.

Money saved should be spent on Free Agents to make the team deeper, not more top heavy except for signing McDavid. McDavid instantly makes the PP at least 25% more lethal, he is that good with space.

He and Matthews are even chums now and share an agent. He is an Ontario guy who would have less pressure but more resources around him. With one Finals under his belt already and his clear desire to win, I think it would be a good marriage and a big playoff upgrade for only a few millions more.

Leafs want to sell jerseys, increase prices AND have a better chance at a Cup? Ink McDavid when he becomes a UFA. Then spend down the line to build four legit, heavier lines.

I don't disagree. I've been critical of the entire core come playoffs. True competitors and champions against their peers find ways to win when it matters most.

Yeah, there is a huge dependency between these two, and only 1 of the pair seems to take the arrows.

The Rockets give him a free pass, but 25th. in the league in the playoffs goals per game over the past 5 years shouldn't be overlooked.
