Yep would love to know what's going on with contract negotiations. Are they even talking new contract?

Watching Marners recent interviews, he seems unusually subdued even after wins, there's a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. When asked about the Four Nations, his response was "Right now my focus is here, trying to help this team win games until then." The phrasing stood out "this team" instead of "our team".

In another interview, he was asked about reaching the 700-point milestone, and yet again, his tone seemed detached and subdued.

With the trade deadline approaching, you have to wonder if the Leafs have recently approached him about waiving. They must have known that Rantanen was being shopped too, which knowing Colorado is being proactive may have put it in their heads they should be too.

LMFAOO if there was a gold medal in mental gymnastics you would win by a landslide.

I’ve never seen someone make a bigger deal out of little phrases than you.

Marner said “help this team” instead of “our team” negotiations must be going oh so bad, 😂😂😂

That phrasing literally doesn’t stand out for anyone except you. If you have a clear bias against someone those are things that are over anyalzed.

They’ve been playing like shit. Wins and losses. He hasn’t been playing his best either. You think he’s gonna be all happy and rainbows when they are losing games they feel like they should be winning? Additionally there could be 10,000 things happening in a persons life. That can cause them to be withdrawn. Maybe it’s not even hockey related. So reading into a little comment & spinning it as some sort of fact is pure delusion and should be called out.

Nylander and Robertson both showed a ton of frustration on Saturday, slamming sticks on the glass. Shaking heads. Marner was frustrated as well. The offense has dried up, the team is frustrated that they cannot produce offense/cannot score. That will obviously reflect in their comments post game.

Definitely not reality thinking we can pull a move like a Miller or Rantanen type of trade. A trade for Miller needs to include a roster player of similar skill or potential. Any deal would probably need to include Knies. Vancouver wouldn’t be looking at futures. We’re handcuffed with nmc’s.

I think expecting anyone on the leafs to waive right now is a bit delusional. Team is first in the division. Why would any of them want to leave? Doesn’t really make sense for any of the players. Especially Mitch who could just ride it out and leave anyways at the end of the season. We are absolutely handcuffed right now.

Dont know what to write here anymore.
He mostly play good.
If they should sign do it after playoffs if possible.
Not for 14mill thank u.
If there is a trade, find the same value or as close as possible.
Dont think i want him to go for nothing, i dont trust the management to use the money he leaves wisely.
He could shoot more when the others dont succede.
Think before he talkes to media...
Thats all. And will be all until the season is over.

I wonder if Mitch and his team would sign a 1 year contract and then look to take advantage the following year with the cap expected to go up yet again.

Maybe a small chance of that after July 1st. Currently his team is more than likely already pitching the bigger cap. Something like 12 million will only be 10% in 3 years.

The best fantasy was when Rantanen got traded by a strong management group. A group that did not want to break the internal cap structure for the greed of a hockey player. It didn't even matter to them that they recently won the cup, they simply had the better sense to cut bait.

If this team had brains they would hold the 8th year hostage and give him a take it or leave it offer. 11.5m or 12m or whatever it is. If not simply ask him to waive and trade to see if he can get what he wants elsewhere.

The core here is not hard-core hockey players, they are soft core hockey players with hard-core agents that are hard pressed to fleece Leafs fans and MLSE so they can live a fraction better high life.

Oh and just remember. All the extra Marer is doing now is just what he was saving himself with in the past. In other words he is actually playing to the level he is capable and the rest of the years were not important enough to him to put in the extra effort.

Sakic offering to make Ranta the highest paid winger at $11.75m shows that Marner (and Nylander) isn't worth close to what the Leafs are rumored to have offered. In the past I said, he should do himself a favour and take $12.8mx8. Now I'd tell Ferris to go f*** himself and take Marner with him. Again.

100% would make the same offer. 11.75m x 8 or waive and trade to a team that has promised you what you want.

If this team doesn't do that you know .. The Toronto Maple Leafs Toy Company is (wink wink) not here to sell jerseys.

Tre won't find a team just like he could not find a team to take Nylander. Overpaying Nylander was his best option. What a fool if he believes that. Welcome back PPG Willie.

You're probably right. For the record I like the possible runner up for the Rocket better then a player that is loaded up with EN goals, secondary assists and not so much playoff jam when you're trying to close the series.

If they knew the cap was going to 100 million in two years it would ok to sign him now and they could find better players so they’re not relying on him in the playoffs.

I wouldn’t sign him now and would wait and see how the playoffs turn out, but I’d also trade any picks or prospects to bolster the lineup to hedge against the core getting pushed out again.

Willie is a 40+ goal scorer and can be a 50+ if he cared to be. This team needs more goal scorers, not cookie monsters asking to be the highest paid player on the team.

Marner has 2 ENG in 12 games in January with one game remaining, 4 in 15 games in December (3 vs Red Wings). The last time he put one by a goalie was December 27th vs Husso. Doesn't scream $13m player to, let alone how much is he is rumored to be asking. If they can't score in the playoffs, they need to let him walk and sign a goal scorer or two. Enough of the same rerun.

Firstly we are back to having a team with a coach that has not accountability. That means it won't go well either which way, but offering Mitch 12m x 8 is even doable, the thing is we need NO NMC or limited.

It must be a non NMC contract. Must be. If not hold his 8th year hostage and tell him we have no intentions of signing you to the 13m or whatever they want.

NMC waived is the only way to deal with this guy.

If Ranta is 11.75, Mitch isn’t even worth 11, let alone the 12.8

Ranta is probably worth what the Leafs have offered Marner and probably what he signs for. Ferris was greedy not taking it. Hope it backfires but it is the Leafs and they are more likely to increase their offer and run back this loser core.

That move embarrassed Leafs brass. It made them look like chumps and at the same time got them a good player, extra cap to work with.

I think GMs would stretch to around 11m for Marner. Some GMs would certainly overpay him as well but between 10-11m is relatively OK. WN at between 9.5m and 10m also ok.

Maybe they need to negotiate with Marner in terms of if you want the money, you don't get the protection. NMC should be the hill to die on.

So pretty much keep mortgaging the future on this lousy core and hope they get it done? They failed to get it done when they added ROR, Acciari and Schenn and every other time they added at the TDL. Other teams, as good or better than the Leafs will add better players. I would save my bullets for next year.

We do not have to be the highest offer on the table, to keep a player who has been a lifelong fan and is playing at home. Time to take advantage of the situation.

I’m not sure how anyone can defend this, but I’m sure they can spin it somehow. It’s quite disturbing

Unless he’s effective in the playoffs you don’t think about re-signing him for the numbers being thrown around. That’s what you pay the elite players.

If you overpay him, you will have to take 75 cents on the dollar for him if you decide to move him.

Would have loved to get Necas, Drury, a 2nd and a 3rd for Marner or more for Marner 50% retained.
