Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

Marner not being a scoring threat really hinders him and consequently, the team. Every time he gets the puck, it's either a muffin at the goalie or looking for a pass. Teams know this and take away the passing lanes. That's why it's a risk giving him a raise on his next contract.

Either get multiple scoring threats, or chase down Rantanen to replace Marner if Carolina can't/won't pay him.
Marner gets more prime chances in a game than Matthews. Either teams are overplaying Matthews and giving space to Marner or Marner's playmaking is very overrated.

Review all the goals he gets and assists he gets and you get to see many are 2nd assists and EN goals. More importantly the vast majority are assists anyone playing in the position making over 3m could make.

I didn't think MM was horrible or anything tonight, but if they expect to win a playoff series or more, he's going to have to be a lot more effective than that in the offensive end.

I actually thought AM was worse tonight. He's usually able to take players on and find open ice; he did very little of any of that on this night.

Also, I think McMann and MM might have some good chemistry and perhaps Berube should explore a combo that includes those two on a line, even when we get players returning.

Even if they're leading the division?
Marner will be in the four nation cup and gets no rest compared to most of his teammates. Going to be tough down the stretch in a contract year. It's all about his playoffs and that's the bottom line for most Leaf fans. Put up or shut up.

The Leafs might as well wait to sign him in the off season and then we will see how he truly feels.

If Marner wants 13 million, u ask him to waive his no trade and move him like Rantenen. I wouldnt offer him more than 11,5, but im not overly comfortable with that number.

How do you even offer him Mack money. It's just a mockery of the organization. At that point this isn't a hockey team it's a toy company selling Merch and a rinky dink show on ice.

GI LEAFS

And Tanev's play being worthy of $7M! I'm sure Dekes is gonna be upset about that one.
What's there to be upset about? I'm very happy that Tanev has done well this year.
And today we learned that Joe Sakic gives zero shits about cap percentage.
Actually, we learned that Sakic doesn't value Rantanen as highly as some people here.

I see you misinterpreted the situation. Sakic doesn’t think Rantanen is worth as much or more than McKinnon, which is obviously correct. So instead of caving and paying like the Leafs do, he actually made the right decision. Does that compute

Slow down. And hit the breaks. We have no idea if this was the right decision. In fact across the board I think there’s a lot of people around the league and probably in Colorado’s dressing room who would argue that they’ve made a huge mistake.

I wonder how they will apply this principle to Cale Makar and if they give Makar more than MacKinnon how that will go over in the dressing room. There’s so many layers to this.

I mean the right decision is to not pay him more than McKinnon. I would assume he wanted as much or more.

And you are right, none of us really know what happened, but this is what I gathered from the situation or why would they trade him.

I dont think there's that many layers, they wanted to move on from Ranta so they did.

Makar will get more than Mack unless he takes a discount, the same principles won't apply.

Rantanen is a good enough player that he doesn't need anyone to validate his value. He was traded because Colorado has obviously set an internal cap and he didn't fit under it. There's a pretty hilarious story over on this board too about internal cap and posters who denied it, remember that?

Since he was pushed out of the game in Ottawa last night they might want to considering trading him now. Taking the chance on him after countless failures seems risky.
His facial expression looked eerily familiar to a playoff game.

Grow a pair and ask him to waive his nmc. He’s nowhere near worth what he wants. If he says no you let him walk to another team. We than focus our efforts on replacing him or improving another positional need.

JT Miller has a managable cap. Would try to see if something can be worked out with Vancouver in season - but they have cap problems of their own i guess, so maybe 3 way trade

what are the leafs going to give to the Canucks mid season? They don’t need Morgan Rielly and Marner nylander and Matthews have a NMC. Leafs don’t have the assets to make a trade for Miller.

Sign him and then trade him later
Marner isn't gonna take a deal that doesn't include a full NMC, and once he's signed, no way in hell he will waive his NMC. Leafs would be stuck with him for the 8 years (assuming that is the length). Not even if he's Larry Murphy'd by fans.

He will just use his charity as his reason/excuse for not waiving like he did this offseason.

Definitely not reality thinking we can pull a move like a Miller or Rantanen type of trade. A trade for Miller needs to include a roster player of similar skill or potential. Any deal would probably need to include Knies. Vancouver wouldn’t be looking at futures. We’re handcuffed with nmc’s.

That’s why we offer 11, take it or see ya.

Yep would love to know what's going on with contract negotiations. Are they even talking new contract?

Watching Marners recent interviews, he seems unusually subdued even after wins, there's a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. When asked about the Four Nations, his response was "Right now my focus is here, trying to help this team win games until then." The phrasing stood out "this team" instead of "our team".

In another interview, he was asked about reaching the 700-point milestone, and yet again, his tone seemed detached and subdued.

With the trade deadline approaching, you have to wonder if the Leafs have recently approached him about waiving. They must have known that Rantanen was being shopped too, which knowing Colorado is being proactive may have put it in their heads they should be too.
