I dont think Lou did anything wrong here, Kovy just seems to miss his home country. He did kinda screw them by doing this now after free agency and the draft, where Lou would have been able to try and replace him somewhat. You can't predict these types of things at all. I am still shocked when I just saw the news.

I'm sure it was family reasons he was ready to go back. Don't really blame him.

On the other hand the devils are screwed and I am loving it. What a pathetic offensive team now. They will be bottom dwellers for years to come.

Can't look it up right now, but anybody got the numbers of salary per year for Kovy? How much did he make? How much did he leave on the table?

I'm assuming he ate all the $10m years and left the rest...

Kovy told Lou at the beginning of the year upon returning from Russia that there was a good chance he may retire at the end of the season to return home.

You also have to take into account that not forfeiting the 29th pick in the 2011 draft looks even dumber now if that's even possible.

Damn that sucks for Devils fans not that we should feel sympathy for them. Don't they lose their 2014 1st too?

Yea, they did. But the NHL will give it back to them, I figured the NHL would remove that penalty when the time cam anyways, but now this will just cement it. I'm loving this sudden retirement though. **** the Debbies. I'm seeing a lot of people talking about how they mutually 'voided' the deal, is this even legal in the CBA? I don't see how he could even playin the KHL now. And if this is legal, what is to stop us from just voiding Pronger's/Stret/Lecavalier deals in the future if they agree to it?

I would have to think his KHL contract will make up for it. He'll probably make something absurd over there.

Reminds me of this tweet:

David Pagnotta ‏@TheFourthPeriod 1m
@wyshynski More... He received approximately $15 million during the lockout, per my KHL-direct source.

Yes this could be a very dangerous precedent

In talking with someone close to Devils: Kovalchuk very tight with KHL money men. Source speculation: "Could make $50M in 5 years there."

It's pretty simple.

Both parties need to agree to void the contract. Pronger can't go make 50m in the KHL, so he wouldn't agree to void his contract. He still wants to get paid.

I can understand him wanting to hold onto the deal for now, but in 2 years and for the last 2 years of his contract he is only making 500k. So he might not be wanting to handcuff the team with that 5 million cap hit when he can just void the contract, which I could easily see him doing as he seems like a solid team player.
