Miscellaneous NHL Discussion CX: That's A Lot.

My beef has long been the idea that he doesn't try. He does! He tried hard under Hunter. He tried hard at defense under Trotz. Lavi? Skated his ass off on the weak side to hit those defensive duties even as his legs got elderly. It's just that he sucks at it. I struggle to buy the idea that he works to put himself in the right general areas just to not try once he's there. He's simply easy to beat.

No argument from me. I generally find the people who think they can tell a player isn’t trying or doesn’t care to be giant fans of Randy Jones not worth your time to even engage.

I'll humor it for Malkin. I've watched the guy take penalties over backchecking way too many times.

However he's also someone who simply sucks at defense. Sometimes he sure looks like he doesn't try, but most of the time he does. He's garbage at it; it's easy to confuse being bad at something with not trying, I guess. I bet there's a perfect overlap with that thinking and people who believes (like certain Philadelphia hockey management groups) that effort is all that matters, and if you're outplayed it isn't because of a skill disparity or simply because that's how sports goes sometimes, it's because you were lazy.

Ovechkin plays defense like I do in Chel, he knows he has to cover a guy, and will be in the general right area, only he typically is chasing the guy around instead of reading the play and anticipating where he the guy is going to go.

I was a tad over a month old the last time the Flyers won the Cup. I'll be turning 50 in a few days.

I sadly don't think it's something I'll ever get to experience in my lifetime, which kinda sucks.
We may share a birth date. I turn 50 in a few days as well.

When you have the greatest goalscorer of all time in your team I think you can overlook his defensive shortcomings.
