I won't lie, I was all prepared for a top-10 pick this year and I hate to see that go away... but not as much as I love the idea of invading the Pacific bracket with Fiala playing like this. Goaltending be damned.

I’d still rather miss and have the (now extremely) low chance of winning the lottery, because you can’t go far with the goaltending we have in the playoffs, but it would be intriguing to see what Fiala could do to the Pacific

Knowing our luck though we’ll somehow end up going against St. Louis in round 1, losing in 5, and picking 16th and it’ll be the same shit, different year.

even if we make the playoffs i just dont see how we have the goaltending or firepower to contend. i hope we miss and get a decent pick. i wont be saying this next year if kaprizov does come over.

I didn’t think we had the firepower to be where we are currently, but look at what 1 star player does for a team.

Now imagine having 3 or more of them.

I don't see us going very deep either, but you never know. The big pluses I see for a playoff berth this year are:
  1. Extra hockey
  2. Getting to see what the reconfigured forward corps' capable of in the playoffs. Fiala's the big one, but Greenway, Kunin, Ek and Donato haven't really been playoff-tested yet and I'd like to see who sinks and who swims.
  3. It's another opportunity to raise some trade stock going into the summer. Parise should be hungrier than ever and him doing well could help if a trade to NYI is revisited over the summer. A strong performance from Brodin and/or Dumba could increase the chances of landing a high-end center.
Whether all that helps more in the long run than a top-10 pick would... hard to say. But it's not nothing.

The potential to draft a really good player, and potentially a 1/2 Center with that pick would be nice.. but outside of a few of the big names who knows what will happen. I would have to assume a nice playoff run would really boost the confidence of those we have on the roster for sure, but a quick sweep or shalacking might do the opposite too. I think the kids we have now do have a lot of integrity so maybe it is a non factor, but I would hate for them to get depleted by a route. Alternately my biggest fear is what happens this off season with free agency for the same reasons. Whether a solid run or a short one, I don't want an overreaction to fill a spot. Another contract like Zucc's will set us back further than anything.

I have to wonder if they consider bringing up Kaapo if he keeps posting a .930 SV% down in the AHL. Probably too much for a young guy to handle and would be better suited playing in the AHL playoffs that he's helped Iowa get to.

Zuccarello has 4 goals and 11 points in 25 games in the 2020 calendar year, 1 goal and 6 points in the 16 games since Feb 1. That 1 goal came on Feb 1 too, so he's gone 15 games without a goal now.

@Webster what should we do

I'm going to treat this like a semi serious question, but I would swap Donato and Foligno.

Donato-Galchenyuk-Fiala
Parise-Ek-Kunin
Greenway-Staal-Hartman
Foligno-Koivu-Zuccarello

I don't see a reason to necessarily keep Staal with Fiala, he's not really doing a whole lot but getting boosted by Fiala. Same with Greenway. I don't see the harm in at least trying that first line. They'd probably be pretty bad defensively, but the idea is they'd usually be in the offensive zone. Just don't put them out there with Pateryn/Hunt.

What are we going to do when he ends the year with 38 points?

I still like Parise and Fiala together. Fiala gets it to the net and Parise is always there

That's fair, I'll allow it. For now. Could also put Fiala and Donato with Ek and have Ek be that guy at the net.

You could pretty much but anyone with Fiala at this point. I am extremly in favor of Ek with Fiala, though. The one thing I think Staal has done well with Fiala is his possession play in the Nutreal zone. He does a good job holding onto the puck until he can just get it to Fiala.
