my guess is it had to do with getting out on their own and away from home. most kids want to leave home when they go to college. at the same time, which school had the best opportunity to play, win and also the school's programs as well.
i know that all factored in with Hauer at UMD. he left the twin cities to play, get away from home and UMD had a very good major program he was going into.
i think Forbort's development is possibly slow due to his size. some big guys just take longer to develop physically and mentally. very often they take longer to put all the pieces together and finally take a step forward.
it's a different level all together, but i see it with the kids i coach now and in the past. i see it with squirts (12U) now and with pee wees (14U) in the past, where many of the physically bigger kids that are larger than the average kid will take longer to put it together. they are growing into new bodies and suddenly they are have problems physically being able to perform on the ice, which then causes them to slow down mentally also as they struggle to perform.
i remember watching some of his frosh and sophomore games and to me he was struggling with just the physical side of the game. at times he looked like a new born calf or horse, just flopping around and couldn't stay on his feet.
i hope he's past this awkwardness now and able to truly move forward.
