Getting a 2026 2nd for Nyquist seems like highway robbery for Nashville...

Agree 1000% - - what a steal for Nashville. I can’t believe Minnesota was dumb enough to overpay for a washed up bottom six hack like Guga Nyquist. Especially when they’re going nowhere this year. Total waste of a 2nd round pick.

For a rental at the deadline? It's a courtesy to make a deal happen. Look at how much retention goes for in those three team deals. A 5th? Do you think adding a 5th to a 4th gets you a 2nd?
So retention does increase value. Then without retention the pick is a third. A mid round pick was fair. It’s a fair trade because the retention increased the return.

That's a steep price to pay. Definitely a seller's market.

Yeah. It's definitely shaping up looking that way. There just aren't many teams that are clear "sellers" this year, with too many teams on the bubble and in the mix. And a lot of the "sellers" either don't really have much of use to sell, or aren't really looking to move pieces, but actually add more for next year.

I mean what do we really have for sure on the market?

Buffalo - Zucker, Greenway, Jokiharju unless they move younger guys under contract.

Montreal - Savard, Armia, Evans.

Pittsburgh - not even sure they sell, but with Pettersson already dealt away, i'm not sure there's much left anyway unless they manage to move a significant term contract like Rakell or Karlsson.

Philadelphia - Laughton, Kuzmenko in the most bargain of bargain bins i guess, maybe Ristolainen?

out west there's...

San Jose - already made their big moves, Kunin, Sturm left potentially.

Chicago - mostly washed up junk like Martinez, Athanasiou, Craig Smith, maybe Connor Murphy who has really fallen off?

Nashville - Nyquist here was really the main piece they had to move, unless they move a guy with term like Luke Schenn or Sissons or something.

Seattle - Brandon Tanev, Gourde but murky depending on health, everyone else has more term and dollars making them tougher to move at deadline.

Anaheim - Dumoulin, maybe Gibson if someone can figure out how to make the money work?

Not really blowing anyone's socks off with quality or quantity. It's just a really weak crop of clear deadline deal "rental" candidates. Unless we see some "big moves" from bubble teams folding on the season...there's just not a lot of "impact players" available, so we may not see the crazy big deals at the very top-end, but it does look like these mediocre middle-tier guys like Gus Nyquist are gonna go for bigger than expected returns as the "best available".

There was some hope around to move Lauzon, but he's out for the season with injury. Schenn's still a maybe. And there's plenty of Preds fans who have a long laundry list of other vets they'd love to sell but they're... rather unlikely as deadline deals.

I never cease to be amazed at the hand wringing and hyperbole over a future draft pick.
3rd Rounder? Fair
2nd? HIGHWAY ROBBERY

a 3rd for Gus seems about right based on many many years of trade deadline deals.

Throw in the preds retaining, the fact that it's a 2026, and that the deal happens today instead of next Friday, and all of those "upcharges" bring the price up to a 2nd.

If it makes sense on an Instacart order it should make sense on a trade

I'm guessing that some these shocked people are just not very aware of Gus Nyquist.

I really wish my Jackets got him back, and it's not too surprising that it was another recent club of his that paid up for him.

Nyquist is a really smart versatile player, high end PKer, can fit on top lines, plays a smart possession game. He had 75 pts just one year ago, he's not super old. His bad season brought his price down but be realistic, if he was a 55 pt guy this year he'd have fetched even more, he would have had the profile closer to a guy who would get a late 1st.

Gus has had a weird career - he had shoulder problems wipe out his best years and that led people to think he was weak and washed a long time ago. He had that fixed and I'm always happy to see him surprise people.

Especially when the Wild gave up a 5th two years ago while having basically the same production.

Probably not a fair comparison. At the time of the previous trade, Nyquist was on LTIR and only played the final 3 regular season games. It wasn't even certain he'd be healthy in time for playoffs.

Didn’t he get more points than any Red Wing last year?
Was popular with most of the Wings fanbase. Didn’t really leave on bad terms and has way overachieved his draft slot.

Strange comment, but everyone feels how they do.

I think he is a good add for the Wild. I can see him helping the pp and being good depth scoring and fitting with that group.

Not really that crazy, Nashville fans figured he would end up going for a 2nd for most of the season. Anyone thinking he was going for a 4th was just being silly.

Even if 3rd round was the price, getting retention and competition in the market doesn't make it that crazy of a leap to get to a 2nd.
