Solid contract. The level he showed when healthy last year makes him easily worth this AAV. He could even regress a fair amount and this would still be a good deal.

Seems most of the NHL is moving toward locking in younger talent where the gamble is on future productivity rather than overpaying for past accomplishments.

The cap is going up.

Most defenseman who prove to be elite while on their ELC get 10-11 percent of the cap for 7-8 years. It has been that way since the Pietrangelo, Doughty, Karlsson era.

If he has another season like the one he just has, maybe he signs for 8.5M next year but it's only for 5 or 6 years. It probably takes closer to 9.5M to get him to sign 8 years, if he is even open to that next year.
