Who knows how it will work out, I’m just pleased with the gamble and that Bill took it. Obviously the Wild see something in him they think they can develop even with the deficiencies in his skating.

Good for the Jets, you do realize there's more than one way to develop and put together a team? Kane, Laine and PLD were proven NHL talents with very little questions about their ability to play in the NHL. Entirely different situations.

Jiriceks ability to hold down a roster spot is in question. If management and the player don't see eye to eye about their ability to play in the NHL, it just might be better for both parties to move on. Jiricek is now a roster where he'll have an opportunity to get minutes, we'll see how he plays on Minnesota. And the Jackets add a plethora of picks moving forward and from all accounts an NHL ready prospect who is going to immediately slot in at the top of the blueline on one of the best teams in the AHL.

I think that's part of the issue, they tried telling him that in Columbus and he apparently didn't agree or want to hear it. Maybe they can finally get it through to him but we'll see.

Once again, Jiricek couldn't even beat a burnt out Jack Johnson and a 6-7th dman in Harris on the Jackets roster, a roster that was expected to be at the top of the lottery race. If you want Jiricek to play D, he's a liability. They wanted him to go to Cleveland to work on the defensive aspect of his game so he's not a complete liability out there. He's not strong enough on his skates or in general to play his style in the NHL. He's not physical, at all. So that 6'4 frame means he's easy to push around without any weight or strength behind it.

He couldn't beat out Jack Johnson - or is Jack Johnson on a 1 way and there are lots of other factors to consider? Evason always rode the Vet's a bit too much in Minny - probably some of that going on in CBJ too.

People cling too much on the sunk cost. Jiricek might have been a 6th overall, but it looks like he's closer to becoming the next Jamie Drysdale or Filip Zadina. I think most GMs cling on to hope for too long.

And I don't think the return was bad even if Jiricek pans out.

If Jiricek pans out - your 2025 25th+ overall pick and some late round picks in 2027 will look like a really bad return.

Hunt will be an alright 5/6 in the NHL - but those are a dime a dozen.

Minnesota got fleeced wow this is a bad trade.
I feel like this an outdated way to describe what would be considered tricking teams or charging teams too much in trade.

Both sides have stated that a fleecing has occurred, I generally like this deal for Columbus as it gives Waddell a plethora of picks in several seasons and Hunt who is waiver exempt.

I dont think Jiricek was worth a first and a second. Columbus got more. I'm a sharks guy and the team could use all the young defence they can get for perspective. Minnesota must think he's a for sure top pair guy.

Minnesota must think he's a for sure top pair guy.
Or they think he has top four potential, is the right age for their time frame and didn't want to wait four+ years for whoever they draft in 2025 to make it to the NHL at best. Like I think people overvalue draft picks by a lot.

Almost every team in the league could've offered more for a 6OA, young RHD, no? Did Columbus get fleeced or is this indicative of how teams view his game?

According to Portzline at the Athletic:

“The Blue Jackets initially asked potential trade partners for one of their top prospects, hoping to make a one-for-one swap. When those players weren’t available, the Blue Jackets adapted their demands for a first-round pick and a depth defenseman”.

If Jiricek was playing capable hockey he wouldn't have gotten 10 minutes of game, he couldn't be trusted on the ice.

I personally think this return reflects how NHL GMs view his potential. By all means, a 21 year old 6'4" RHD with draft pedigree should have returned a bounty. That he didn't means that teams don't think he's very good.

Agreed, that no other GM was willing to trade one of their top prospects for Jiricek lets me know how they view his potential at this snapshot in time. Now they could all be wrong and more than just Waddell will have egg on his face if Jiricek blossoms into a stud but for now this trade reflects his market value.

With Kaprizov, Boldy, JEE, and Rossi up front, 15 million in dead cap coming off the books this upcoming offseason, and all the while already sitting 2nd place in the entire league right now.

The Wild are insanely well situated. If they play their cards right they might finally make a final or win a cup in the next 3 seasons.
Yeah, but there is one big obstacle in their way to get to the finals....the first round.

I love them like a son of a B, but they can't seem to get over that hump.

Jiricek makes $82,500 in the AHL and $855,000 in the NHL.

No wonder he's a bit antsy and pissed to have been sent down. He seems to think the grass is greener on the other side of the street.

Or something is greener, anyway.

Minnesota will probably ease Jiricek into 3rd pairing minutes with Bogosian playing on his offside, rotating with Chisholm at 3LD.

1st Pair LD Middleton RD Faber
2nd Pair LD Brodin RD Spurgeon
3rd Pair LD Bogosian RD Jiricek

Extra’s:
LD Chisholm
LD Merrill

Evason isn't some coach that was ever or should ever be known for his ability to develop players.

Brutal take on the rest of it. Trade makes little sense? What are you talking about? The 1st is pick 25+ with the year we are having and the rest of the picks are throw ins....who cares. If you can get a 6'4 RHD with Jiricek's resume for that package you do it every day with the situation the Wild are in currently. We are no longer stocking cupboards and building a prospect pool. We are entering the Village burning phase and these are the moves to make when you want to do that.

He may not be known for it yet, but his track record says he should be, and maybe the year he is having in Columbus finally gets him the recognition for the great job he does with young players. There's a long list of players in their early 20s that were were/are productive under Dean. I like how you say I don't know what I'm talking about when I described what I'm talking about. Since you don't address my reasoning, it's best for us to move on.

Russo yesterday posted that Bracket thinks Jiricek would go to-10 in a re-draft. It's a delusional take, but it aligns with why they were willing to give up what they did. Maybe the simple reason why it doesn't make sense is because management doesn't have it.

It's more like they are in a position to take a high upside risk at the expense of a few picks.

Teams already good, prospect pool is pretty flush.

MN doesn’t need this kid to become a top pair RD. They need him to become a second pairing RD with some offensive upside. It very likely he ends up playing with an absolute defensive stud as his partner on the left side so if he does has some defensive lapses to go along with his cannon of a shot and good offensive instincts then that will be fine

I saw Jiricek in an AHL game last year and I wouldn’t want my team matching the Wild’s offer, people are acting like late 1sts are trash
Some of the Blue Jackets fans in this thread might have seen him play multiple NHL games and are disappointed in the return. I don't think that means late 1sts are trash

He was drafted in 2022.
Not denying that the guy needs developing, but so do most prospects, especially big gangly D. The guy needs to get stronger, which will help his balance, agility, and skating. If he is willing to work hard, it can be done. My worry, as a Wild fan, is that he might be one of those guys who doesn't "get it", and doesn't understand that he isn't good enough right now. Maybe this trade, and some wise words in his ear from his own camp, will get him back on the right track.
Nice

Funny to go back and see the snarky responses to what turned our to be very fair trade offers from Wild fans.

Don’t blame current Columbus management. The kids probably a bust and they know it. He was an inherited player.
I don't think he's a bust but at the rate he's going he's just going to be a RHD3 that QBs a PP. Which isn't bad but you would expect more from a former 6th overall pick. He's a major development project at this point and I really think Wild fans are going to see while he maybe can do some RHD3 work its probably best to put him in the AHL for a bit. He thinks he's NHL ready but opposition constantly took advantage of that poor skating this year which is why he got benched over the living corpse of Stanley cup champion Jack Johnson so far.
