If I'm Tom Fitzgerald, I'm offering a ton of contract options his way:

3 years, 4.5 million per. (13.5 million)
4 years, 4 million per. (16 million)
5 years, 3.85 million per. (19.25 million)
6 years, 3.5 million per. (21 million)

If he doesn't like any of those options, then it was great having you as a Devil soldier.

I don't think we should be taking his beginning of the season quotes lightly. "I'm sick and tired of being on a losing team" ... I think he's going to want to stay in New Jersey, as their present and future is as bright as any in the NHL. Probably the brightest in the NHL.

Nah, you replace him with someone better, cheaper, and younger. Let someone else sign him to a bad contract.
especially when the Devils still have lots of draft picks and a still pretty deep prospect cupboard. If the Devils didn't have those I would understand a GM having to play more to keep a guy like Wood.

I think the devils let him go. This will be a big off season for them, potential for a lot of turn over. They should be replacing depth for cheap and trying for a big top 6 winger.

I get your approach but it don't always end up that way. A lot of outcomes could happen that you can't predict. Wood could blossom in his 27-32 years or he is meh and like Armia with the Habs. Devils could struggle with replacing him. There is no absolute clear road on that due to unknowns.

I think he is a good player but he has flaws and consistency issues. Will a 3 year deal at $3.5M or $4M be a bad contract? I'm not sure but what I do know is the cost for players like this is going up with a growing cap to come. It's nearly impossible to have all of your bottom 6 as $2M or under contracts if you want to compete for the playoffs and make runs.

Wood is a great NJD...Plays hard will drop the gloves has wicked speed and compete...Could bitch about being on fourth line he doesn't just shows up and plays....That said I hope Devils sign him but if they do it's gotta be at low term give him more higher dollar amount but the world isn't perfect I think he'll test ufa.......I could see a team like Buffalo offering him a big contract to go there as a middle 6 fwd
