Your Worst Nightmare
The Leafs have more than enough forwards and need a backup goaltender. The Panthers have an over supply of goalies and the cap space and roster room to take on an extra top-9 forward. There are only a few backups on the market of comparable talent to Berra in Ramo, Enroth and Scrivens. While, there are only a few forwards left of comparable talent to Michalek in Hudler, Vrbata, Versteeg and Tanguay. Perhaps, a trade would be a better way to go for both sides.

I've seen several posts on here saying Luongo will be ready after all to start the season. If those posts are false, then it doesn't make much sense. If he'll be ready they have too many goalies.

Also, they weren't assured of signing Reimer when they traded for Berra. Having Berra was good insurance, and since they have the cap space, burying him for a year won't hurt them.

Leafs fans seem keen on dumping Michalek. A team should buy low on the guy if they can fit him into their salary cap. He's a relatively high risk (injury)/high reward-type player at this point. The OP mentions a few decent comparables but they might not come on short-term deals.

I think Michalek's days as a potential "high reward-type" are long gone. He has scored >40 points only once since the 2009-10 season, and as you mentioned, injuries have plagued him. As a GM I can make better use of the $4m I'd owe Michalek.

Its really just about opening spots for the youth.

The guy hasn't been any good since 2011-2012. No reason for the Panthers to do this trade

Then why didn't they just re-sign Montoya?

Panthers wanted a guy who could share the load with luongo. Montoya was very solid last year, but the Panthers wanted someone a bit better. They also knew Montoya didn't want to play in the AHL so they went their separate ways this offseason.

Berra will be on waivers in early fall, likely at the end of training camp. Leafs have first pick as they finished last. Just wait until then...or pick up another back up goalie. Leafs will have lots to pick from, and really this is a team likely to finish in the bottom 5...how important is the quality of the back ip anyway?
