Mikkola Hit on Girgensons. Given 5 mins and game misconduct (fined $5000)

Ah yes, that $5,000 fine surely will prevent the same thing from happening tomorrow night.

I'm not even going to blame refereeing for the TB loss last game, but come on. Hagel's hit on Barkov was far more of a hockey play than that was, and he got suspended a game. The fact that there was ZERO penalty on Ekblad's forearm shiver is a joke. League needs to do better.

As strange as it sounds I think Mikkola got the message. But we'll see.

Mikkola makes 2.5 mil per year. Which means he makes ~48k per week. Which means he makes ~7k per day.

This fine is taking away less than a days wages. Real big deterrent for these multimillionaires.

And the fine for flipping pucks from centre ice is 5 times as much as attempting to break someone’s neck. (team rather then player but still looks bad)

the ddos shows favorite to the panthers 4 for 4. ZERO SUSPENSIONS for them and 1 for Hagel. All or none. Complete on way hearing and reffing from the dpos.

Hagel hit Was less dangerous than all 3 and he got a game. It should be all suspended or none. Why is the dpos showing blatant favoritism to repeat offenders?

Hagel hit him in the head, jumped, and the puck wasn’t there. Hagel got it so easy but he’s a weak little guy. Oh well. Soft league
The only thing partially correct about your first sentence is Barkov missed touching the puck. The fact the puck wasn’t there is irrelevant as Tkachuk hit Guentzel well after the puck wasn’t there and that didn’t matter since he touched it last. Barkov was trying to make contact with the puck, was positioned ahead of McDonagh, but McDonagh reached out his stick and touched it first knocking it behind the net. Hagel hit a guy who didn’t actually contact the puck which was only confirmed when it was shown in slow motion. There was no jumping into the hit, his feet leaving the ice, nor the hit making contact with his head.

For my taste, this was in the 1-game suspension range, so I consider a fine to be a reasonable punishment. But where is consistency? Here are very similar situations:

Hagel (this series): major + 1 game suspension
Tkachuk: major

Kucherov (2019 on Nutivaara): ejected from the game + 1 game suspension
Mikkola: ejected from the game

Looks like Tkachuk and Mikkola got 1 game discount somehow. DOPS coupon?

I doubt the players would argue for higher fines and more money lost.
I know they wouldn't but they should. The fines affect only a small minority of players and the potential to lose millions because of long-term injuries should be a lot more concerning for the majority who don't go full Tom Wilson every other game.

Of course, he league should be more far more strict with suspensions and fines regardless of the NHLPA's actions or lack thereof but the "we have always done it this way" factor is too strong.

What a stupid hit. The puck is there for the taking and instead he decides to drive the head/neck into the boards on a defenseless and vulnerable player.

Is Mikkola’s head full of rocks?

I support Florida these playoffs and I support Mikkola ( I know his mom well) but I cant believe Mikkola wasn’t suspended from this play. Very stupid and dangerous hit that could have caused a serious injury. This league is so incosistent with suspensions
