So with a secondary assist on a empty net goal against Minnesota Mikko Rantanen was able to break Nikita Kucherov's single season empty net points record by collecting his 15th empty net point of the season: NHL Stats

Rantanen has just 75 points this season so scoring 15 empty net points is really ridiculous. When Kucherov put up 14 empty net points he had a very respectable 144 points and won the Art Ross. Rantanen on the other hand has been spiraling out of control after being traded from Colorado and has just 11 points in 21 games after the trade. Take MacKinnon and Makar away and Rantanen is just a borderline top 6 player on pace for 15+27=42 points over a full 82 game regular season. If things continue like this Rantanen can forget about making the Hall of fame.

You know what, I do think this is interesting and will be watching Rantanen's career in Dallas with great interest.

I think the Carolina numbers are a fluke in the other direction but the idea that his huge numbers were a product of supporting staff in Colorado + major deployment with them is not an outrageous hypothesis.

It's sad but I feel like he'll never be a late great like Lanny McDonald or Owen Nolan, just heartbreaking stuff.
