Mike Weaver Appreciation Thread

yeah he should be re-signed. we have a log jam of young d prospects but he's a damn solid 3rd pairing guy.

as much as i keep saying our D corps is better with Gorges, I'd trade Josh for pick/prospect.

have Tinordi and Beaulieu fight it out next year for top 4 minutes. If MB could move him with no salary coming back and sign Vanek and PK. I'd be damn happy.
 
I agree moving Gorges might be the solution to make some space for PK, Vanek. HIs contract is bad though we may have a hard time trading him.
 
The guys gives his 100% he is like many fans advertised... somepeople calling him the most underated player in the league some saying he plays well but does a huge mistake once a game. . So far he has been just that awesome and some times frustrating.. I would say 65% of time pretty good I surely like him more than drewiski or bouillon...

He is tradable. Serviceable start at home d man that can handle the PK and make smart plays, ads vetern voice as well. Teams like the oilers, avs maybe even leafs need guys like that. Now you may get back a 4th and a prospect that may never play in NHL but should be fine if cap space is all that is needed.

That third pairing would be given crazy hard minutes, and they'd still come out looking pretty good. Giving our other two pairings easier minutes would give us a ton of offense.

I like him but he hasn't proved he can play on his wrong side.:sarcasm:
Let's test him with Emelin playing them both on their wrong sides before we give him a dime.

Gorges would easily get more than a 4th and a bad prospect!

That would be terrible asset management.

Anyway, I was pretty happy when the Habs traded for Weaver, he's been one of the most underrated defensemen in the NHL for years, cerebral, quiet and does his job, nothing more, nothing less.
 
One thing to note about Dudley is since his departure in Toronto they've made a lot of questionable decisions at the pro level.


Love what Weaver brings as a third pairing guy on the right side. Definitely resign him for a year or two
 
I was not thrilled by the acquisition but he really impressed me so far. Good move by MB.
 
Keep Weaver, use him as your 6th/7th Dmen, and get rid of Bouillon and Murray.
 
He is doing better than expected but he has his limitations, see the goal that should have counted. This d-men group has to be tougher to play against. Weaver is surely better than Bouillon. Some days better than Murray (though I believe the latter gets some unjustified bashing sometimes...), but he's still tiny. So what will be the composition of the D for the next year or 2? 'Cause it's not solely about the players himself.....it's about the composition of the entire unit. We could take all of the greatest under 5'10'' d-men and form an all-star team but then, it won't work out.

So next year, we should be talking about Subban, Markov, Gorges, Emelin, Beaulieu and Tinordi. So it's not bad. Subban, Emelin, Tinordi and even Beaulieu could bring some toughness to the game. So Weaver might fit well as a #7. Whether that's what he wants...remains to be seen.

It really depends on what MB's vision or long term goal with this D is.
Do we continue down the path of trying to plug players into positions not best suited for them.
I would like to hope that is not the case and that ultimately we are looking for balance.
It worked swimmingly well for Canada's D :):):)

Weaver has always been very underrated by both the media and fans but considering that neither one of these groups have the slightest clue what they are talking about.........it isn't very surprising.

Most of the people who didn't like the Weaver trade didn't like the Weise trade as well. They were so sure of themselves and they had their advanced stats to prove it lol.

Didn't take spreadsheets to see both of those players' weakness before the trades, and they have the same weaknesses now, btw. But at this point it's like complaining about how Murray lacks skill as an individual, because the machine still works really well with(/despite) those parts installed. No one ever questioned how a 2nd pairing defenseman in his early/mid 30s became a $1 million defenseman just last year, or why Weise has only played just over half as many NHL games as Eller, despite being a year older? It's certainly not due to lack of short-comings between them.

Let's all be happy that the "fitting in" percentage has been so high with these moves, and that injuries gave an opportunity for guys like this to actually prove useful, because not all trades work despite looking great on paper or sounding great in an interview, and not all "insurance policies" get the chance for long stretches of play. Let's not summarily dismiss opinions simply because "nothing matters as long as we're winning", or argue that the results of the team automatically dismiss all criticism at the individual level, though. That's just being a lazy fan boy.

Actually you're wrong here, advanced stats are very favourable to Weaver's play and most stats guys were happy with the trade for the same reasons they were unhappy with the Diaz trade. Both are reasonably good (and affordable) possession guys who can handle tougher minutes than the typical #5.

The people who hated the Weaver trade seemed either to be upset about a player under 6', or thought Weaver was superfluous and not any better than Murray or Bouillion.
 
7 points, +11 in 14 games playing mostly with the scrap. Really impressive, should be considered for 3rd pairing RD. Might be great mentor type for Beaulieu/Tinordi.
 
Weaver has been involved in 4 of Pacioretty's last 7 points. More than Desharnais (3) and Vanek (3). How is that even possible?
