Can't see us re-signing Gabby, Lombardi won't commit the years that other teams will

This would be unfortunate, because the Kings have needed a player like him for so long.

I would dump any forward not named Kopitar or Carter to free up the space. Hopefully DL feels the same way, he already missed out on this guy once would hate to see it happen again.

Gaborik isn't worth more than a one year extension at this point. If he wants multiple years I'd be fine with him going elsewhere

Do what the Caps used to do with Semin and just go one year at a time with Gaborik. He's at that age where he probably doesn't want to move around too much and if he finds some good chemistry with Kopitar (which I think we've seen glimpses of), then I think he'd be open to the idea.

I honestly think this too. Maybe not a 1 year, but 2 year deal, but how many opportunities like this will Gabby have? To play on a contender with an elite center and not be expected to have to offensively carry or lead the team, just be a good top 6 guy. The Kings have enough cap space to offer him a fair amount, they just won't break the bank for him, nor should they. But I have to believe there's just not a money grubber in that #12 jersey, but a competitor who wants to win as well.

In no particular order, just throwing out the financials, but I wouldn't exactly expect a plethora of cash floating around next season either. Gaborik may be in the $5 million range if we can sign a tricky deal, but will likely get over $6m. King is expecting a decent sized raise and will have to be paid more than Lewis, maybe even more than I put down. $2-3 million should be expected to be put back into the defense, so insert that for Greene or whoever takes his place. There just isn't a lot of room to work with. This is why Dean was annoyed with the cap numbers announcement. He wants to keep his players, even the ones we want to get rid of.

(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $70,201,894; BONUSES: $342,500

I think there is an oversight. Isn't next season DB's new contract frontloaded? I thought he is making 7mil or something.

In actual salary, yes. But the salary cap number is correct, which is all that matters for salary cap purposes.

I'd give Gaborik around 5.5 million for 2 or 3 years, if that's what it takes to lower the salary they agree upon. Every dollar will count next year IF we're working with 68 million. If its closer to 71 our hands are in no way tied.

I believe even with the new CBA the cap hit is the average of the contract not the actual money made. Richards for example is making close to $8 million this year but his cap hit is $5.8

As for the Kings cap lists that have been posted.

Some are putting the Kings way to close to the $71 number, for one the $71 may not even be the number this year and with the struggles of the Canadian dollar recently the number is probably going to be back down below $70 for 2015-2016.

Dwight King's number is to low here. He is going to get closer to 2 than 1.

Some aren't addressing the defense, I think the Kings will be in the market for a 3-4 type defenseman. Would be shocked and terrified to see Matt Greene back and playing in a top 6 role.

As for the future. The Kings will get a little relief if Williams and Stoll leave after next season, that is about $7 mill in space but if TT has a big year next season, which is possible he is going to eat up a decent chunk of Williams hit with his new contract. On defense Martinez and Muzzin will be FA's and will get raises, especially Martinez if he keeps up this play.

Kopitar's contract also ends sooner than most realize and he is going to demand a pretty big raise, we are talking about one of the elite talents in the league who will be entering UFA at age 29. The Kings have to have Kopi on their minds when it comes to adding players or keeping players.

I just have a hard time seeing the Kings being able to build a championship roster year after year with so many players (particularly forwards) signed to such long term big money deals, especially with the uncertainly year to year with the cap. I know it's not a popular opinion here, but take out either Brown or Richards contracts on capgeek's calculator and play around with it for awhile and I think you will see dumping one of them makes the Kings cap situation and on ice situation much better going forward. I think losing Gaborik to keep Brown or Richards would be a huge mistake for the Kings, especially with how well Carter has played at center before.

We're not going to lose out on Gaborik by keeping Richards and Brown. We're going to lose Trevor Lewis to keep Gaborik. Therefore we jettison Clifford to keep Lewis, and promote from within. This is likely the worst case scenario, and it is only happening if the cap meets the rock-bottom projection (and it usually isn't).

Mitchell can still play, so he'll be re-signed short term. There's very little better out there for the price.

This year will be all about juggling and cap wizardry, IN CASE its super low forus for a season. Next summer is the moment of truth. Stoll, Williams, Regehr, and Martinez (and possibly Mitchell, if he's still here) are UFA, and Toffoli, Muzzin and Pearson are RFA. We'll need to start weeding out who can be retained in addition to our RFAs.

I highly doubt we lose Gabby because another team offer a longer term. And I certainly don't think Lombardi will offer a one year extension. If Gabby's happy being a king, and Lombardi is equally happy with Gabby, I have no doubt they will come to a reasonable, 2+ year agreement.

NYR fan here. I saw that Richards was dropped to the 4th line so I wanted to checkout the opinions on your page. I read the intro so I'm not gonna touch on anything specific from his Philly days (ie the partying/drugs), however....have those "rumors" followed him to LA? He was such a Great 2 way center, I'm shocked to see his play dip like this.

Is there talk that he may be a buyout candidate this summer?

No rumors of partying. Won't get bought out.

Production decline is a result of lack of passion. He's picked it up recently-- just in time for the playoffs.

One thing people tend to not mention in relation to the 'production decline' is he's still third on the team in points. This whole team has had a production decline. St. Louis and us are likely going to be the best team in the league without a 70 point guy unless Kopi gets hot a bit down the stretch. Is it coincidence that St. Louis plays a very similar style to us?

We don't play a style that does well in terms of personal point totals.

Kreider and Mcdonagh for Richards?! :sarcasm:

41 pts puts MR right in the middle of second line C's in the league and the guy is a clutch performer who has more than proven himself at every level of play including with the Kings. He has been picking things up again lately just in time for the playoffs and I don't see any reason why would come close to considering him as a buyout candidate this offseason or any reason to move him either.

To me a worst case scenario is that MR is moved to 3rd line C which I think is a great move for us.

I still think MR is a great player and that we are lucky to have him but I understand how people can see things a little differently. That said I bet that if MR where shopped we would have zero trouble moving him. The guy is still one of the best clutch players in the game to me and anyone looking to take the next step towards winning a cup would likely go out of there way to get him on board, just like we did.

The points matter during the reg season but the level of play in the playoffs is what matters to a team that is looking to win a cup and that is where has proven over the past two seasons that he is a very special and important player to the Kings and to our success. Imo any ways.

Fourth line has been dangerous and putting up points with Richards there. Seems like a good strategic move by Sutter.

This. Richards and king were not being productive on the 2nd line. Richards has actually made the 4th line a threat to score, something that has been missing for A long while. Lewis is actually scoring some goals since Richards was put there.

It's a win win situation. Being able to roll 4 lines all game is going to improve the offense allowing players to be fresher throughout the game. I love the lines right now.

I daresay this move to get Gaborik moved people in their more natural places then the move to get Carter did in 2012. That fourth line is dangerous; hell, they are all very dangerous.

As long as everyone is producing, playing responsible hockey, and buzzing you could call them the tenth line and I wouldn't care.

Absolutely agree, just saying it's a matchups nightmare for other teams.

Food for thought, if Toews is out, we have arguable 4 centers better than their #1.
