Poor guy, hope the procedure goes well. Curious about how concussion testing could reveal a heart issue though, I would have thought there was little overlap in concussion and heart tests.

Anyways, as Lou said, better to find out this way than through an acute heart problem.

I would imagine stress tests would be part of checking for concussion symptoms, or something like that. "And while we're here, we might as well measure this... oh damn."

Hope he'll be OK. (Even if I am admittedly still bitter about him bailing on my Jackets post-college career after we'd drafted him...)

As stated by Lou and quoted in the TSN article on it:

"It was picked up through the different echocardiograms that you do for different reasons that you go through with any post-concussion situation," Lamoriello said. "It's probably a blessing in disguise of what transpired. They detected this, something that you're sometimes born with, but never knew."

Thank you for the follow up!

Next time HR tries to give me trouble for threatening to punch coworkers in the head i can point to this!

I'm kidding calm the f*** down. I don't even threaten them, I just do it.

That's good it was discovered now and not before it might be too late either for his career/Way of life, or worse.

Sounds like this could have been one of those “died on the bench” issues. Sounds like he will recover 100% and even be able to return to play. What a great news story

Presumably this is where he suffered the concussion (this was 2.5 weeks ago):

That's one crazy domino effect. Who knows where things might've ended up if that hit didn't happen? Glad they caught it early, and all the best for a full recovery.

Hope he makes a swift and full recovery. I'm glad they caught it now; I never want to see another Alexei Cherapanov tragedy again as long as I live.
